Here are some letters from our readers.‎ ‎    ■Yes, many cyclists behave dangerously. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists. But pedestrians are probably the worst offenders.‎ ‎    People of all ages happily walk along the pavement with eyes and hands glued to the mobile phone, quite unaware of what is going on around them. They may even do the same thing while crossing a road at a pedestrian crossing or elsewhere. The rest of us have to evade (避让) them or just stand still to wait for the unavoidable collision.‎ ‎    The real problem is that some pedestrians seem to be, at least for the moment, in worlds of their own that are, to them, much more important than the welfare of others.‎ ‎    ——Michael Horan ‎    ■I love the letter from Bob Brooks about cyclists (Viewpoints, May 29). I am afraid they seem to think they own the roads.‎ ‎    I was walking across Altrincham Road one morning when a cyclist went round me and on being asked what he was doing he shouted at me.‎ ‎    The government built a cycle lane on the road but it is hardly used.‎ ‎    The police do nothing. What a laugh they are!‎ ‎    The cyclists should all have to be made to use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, fluorescent (发荧光的) jacket and lights at night and in the morning they should pay some sort of tax and be fined for not wearing them.‎ ‎    ——Carol Harvey ‎    ■Cyclists jump on and off pavements (which are meant for pedestrians), ride at speed along the pavements, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they are on red.‎ ‎    I was almost knocked down recently by a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next to him.‎ ‎    Other road users, including horse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists?‎ ‎    It's about time they had to be registered and insured, so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident, at least they can be treated and there might be an opportunity to claim.‎ ‎    ——JML ‎    Write to Viewpoints of the newspaper.‎ ‎21. Michael Horan wrote the letter mainly to show that _______.‎ ‎  A. drivers should be polite to cyclists B. some pedestrians are a threat to road safety ‎  C. road accidents can actually be avoided D. walking while using phones hurts one's eyes ‎22. Carol Harvey suggests that cyclists should _______.‎ ‎  A. be provided with enough roads B. be made to pay less tax for cycling ‎  C. be asked to ride on their own lanes D. be fined for laughing at policemen ‎23. What is a complaint of JML?‎ ‎  A. Cyclists ride fast on pavements. B. Very few drivers are insured. ‎ ‎  C. Pedestrians go through red traffic lights. D. Horse riders disrespect other road users.‎ ‎24. The three letters present viewpoints on _______.‎ ‎  A. ways to improve road facilities B. real source of road danger  ‎ C. measures to punish road offences D. increased awareness of road rules B  ‎ One morning, Ann’s neighbor Tracy found a lost dog wandering around the local elementary school. She asked Ann if she could keep an eye on the dog. Ann said that she could watch it only for the day.  Tracy took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers(传单), and put them in mailboxes. Meanwhile, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, warning her two sons not to fall in love with the dog. At the time, Ann’s son Thomas was 10 years old, and Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation, was 21 years old.  Four days later Ann was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. When she arrived home from work, the dog threw itself against the screen door and barked madly at her. As soon as she opened the door, Riley dashed into the boys’ room where Ann found Jack suffering from a heart attack. Riley ran over to Jack, but as soon as Ann bent over to help him the dog went silent.  “If it hadn’t come to get me, the doctor said Jack would have died,” Ann reported to a local newspaper. At this point, no one had called to claim the dog, so Ann decided to keep it.  The next morning Tracy got a call. A man named Peter recognized his lost dog and called the number on the flier. Tracy started crying, and told him, “That dog saved my friend’s son.”  Peter drove to Ann’s house to pick up his dog, and saw Thomas and Jack crying in the window. After a few moments Peter said, “Maybe Odie was supposed to find you, maybe you should keep it.” ‎ ‎25. What did Tracy do after finding the dog?‎ A. She gave it to Ann as a gift. B. Grateful. D. Tolerant.‎ ‎27. What can we infer about the dog from the last paragraph?‎ A. It would be kept by Ann’s family. B. It would be given to Odie. ‎ C. It would be returned to Peter. D. It would be taken away by Tracy.‎ C Some of the world’s most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.‎ Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.‎ It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.‎ ‎“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”‎ Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.‎ Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,” says Moran, “so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster.”‎ ‎28. Why did UNESCO set April 30 as International Jazz Day?‎ A. To remember the birth of jazz. B. To protect cultural diversity.‎ C. To encourage people to study music. D. To recognize the value of jazz.‎ ‎29. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?‎ A. Jazz being less popular with the young. B. The production of jazz growing faster.‎ C. Jazz becoming more accessible. D. The jazz audience becoming larger.‎ ‎30. What can we infer about Moran’s opinion on jazz?‎ A. It will disappear gradually. B. It remains black and white.‎ C. It should keep up with the times. D. It changes every 50 years.‎ ‎31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?‎ A. The Story of a Jazz Musician. B. The Rise and Fall of Jazz.‎ C. Exploring the Future of Jazz. D. Celebrating the Jazz Day.‎ D Science has a lot of uses. It can uncover laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there’s always a temptation(诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation. Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren’t? To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of disciplines(学科). Considering this, you might expect the book to be a dry collection of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unorthodox(非常规的), and perhaps unfortunate, way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters. On the whole, Brooks’s story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks’s attempt to translate his tale into science.‎ ‎32. The author mentions the functions of science at the beginning of the passage to __________. A. explain why many writers use science in their works B. illustrate where science can be applied ‎ C. demonstrate the value of Brooks’s new book D. remind the reader of the importance of science ‎ ‎33. According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book? A. Its strong basis. B. Its convincing points. C. Its memorable characters. D. Its clear writing. ‎ ‎34. What is the author’s general attitude towards the book? A. Contradictory. B. Supportive. C. Critical. D. Cautious. ‎ ‎35. What is the author likely to write about after the last paragraph? A. Brooks’s translation skills. B. Brooks’s life experience. ‎ C. Death of the characters. D. Problems with the book. ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Evaluating Sources (来源) of health Information Making good choices about your own health requires reasonable evaluation. A key first step in bettering your evaluation ability is to look carefully at your sources of healthy information. Reasonable evaluation includes knowing where and how to find relevant information, how to separate fact from opinions, how to recognize poor reasoning, and how to analyze information and the reliability of sources.    36 ‎ Go to the original source. Media reports often simplify the results of medical research. Find out for yourself what a study really reported, and determine whether it was based on good science. Think about the type of study.    37 ‎ Watch for misleading language. Some studies will find that a behavior “contributes to” or is “associated with” an outcome; this does not mean that a certain course must lead to a certain result.   38 Carefully read or listen to information in order to fully understand it.‎ Use your common sense. If a report seems too good to be true, probably it is. Be especially careful of information contained in advertisements.    39 Evaluate “scientific” statements carefully, and be aware of quackery(江湖骗术).‎ ‎  40 Friends and family members can be a great source of ideas and inspiration, but each of us needs to find a healthy lifestyle that works for us.‎ Developing the ability to evaluate reasonably and independently about health problems will serve you well throughout your life.‎ A. Make choices that are right for you.‎ B. The goal of an ad is to sell you something.‎ C. Be sure to work through the critical questions.‎ D. And examine the findings of the original research.‎ E. Distinguish between research reports and public health advice.‎ F. Be aware that information may also be incorrectly explained by an author’s point of view.‎ G. The following suggestions can help you sort through the health information you receive from common sources.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用 (满分45分)‎ 第一节:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ I don’t know why I came to the decision to become a loser, but I know I made the choice at a young age.
