To tell parents how to educate kids B Teenagers have long been told that being active and taking part in sports is good for their health. But new research suggests that too much sport for teenagers could negatively affect their well-being just as much as too little sport. The US Department of Health and Human Services suggests that young people aged between 6 and 17 carry out at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, 7 hours a week. But researchers from Switzerland say their study suggests that 14 hours of physical activity a week is best for promoting good health in teenagers. However, they found that more than 14 hours appears to be detrimental to their health. To reach their findings, the researchers surveyed more than 1,245 teenagers aged between 16 and 20 from Switzerland. All participants were required to answer questions regarding height and weight, sports practice, sports injuries and well-being. Their well-being was assessed using the World Health Organization (WHO) Well-Being Index, which provides scores between 0 and 25. Of the participants, 50.4% were male with a mean age of 17.95 years. Almost 9% of these males were overweight. The overall well-being score for all participants was 17. The researchers divided sports participation into low (0-3.5 hours a week), average(3.6-10.5 hours), high (10.6-17.5 hours), and very high (more than 17.5 hours). The researchers found that participants in the low and very high activity groups were more than twice as likely to have well-being scores below 13, compared with participants who carried out around 14 hours of physical activity a week, but beyond 14 hours resulted in lower well-being scores. Commenting on their findings, the researchers say physical activity has been associated with positive emotional well-being, reduced sadness, anxiety and stress disorders, and improved self-esteem(自尊)in teenagers. The researchers note that their study stresses the importance for physicians caring for teenagers to check their level of sports practice and ask them about well-being. Teenagers probably need a supportive and closer follow-up of their health and well-being. The findings can inform guideline groups who produce recommendations on sports practice for teenagers. 4.From the first paragraph we can conclude that _________. A. everything coin has two sides B. teenagers negatively do sports C. active sports does good to health D. lack of exercise influences health 5. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Positive. B. Essential. C. Harmful. D. Beneficial. 6. What did the researchers find out? A. Taking part in sport less is the cause of overweight. B. Overdoing sport exercise is unhealthy for teenagers. C. Very high activity groups tend to get higher well-being scores. D. Self-esteem is improved by unlimited sport activity. 7. How do physicians assess teenagers’ health from the study? A. The way to promote teenagers’ physical health. B. The necessity of giving suggestions on their workout. C. The method of improving their emotional well-being. D. The importance of checking their level of workout. Where there is life, there is hope D Donna Steeden is support services manager at Quantum, which runs 26 homes. Like many working in care, she was drawn to it because she wanted to make a difference. But what sets Steeden apart is that her career path began in the kitchen. Steeden began her career in a hospital kitchen as a trainee chef. She stayed there for 10 years before becoming a relief chef at Quantum Care. Her responsibilities include catering, laundry and housekeeping services. Care catering is developing all the time. People have different needs and especially need special service in diet. This is the biggest change during these years. People need to know how to prepare that and provide a variety of options which still meet people ' s dietary and nutritional needs, she says. Chefs in care homes rely on different tools and techniques to create a meal that resembles a typical roast dinner, with the right texture (质地)for somebody who has difficulty swallowing. "We have to think outside the box — go through the menu of the day and then adapt that for all the specialist diets such as dairy-free, low-sodium or textured, but still have to provide the exact same meal. ” This is exactly what attracted Stuart Middleton to work as a chef in care. He said, Care catering is looked down upon, especially in the chef world. A lot of chefs think there is nothing you can do with a textured meal and it's not nice to look at. ” A new qualification due to launch in April, the Level 2 Award in professional cookery in health and social care — the first of its kind to focus on care catering — is expected to raise the fame of care chefs as well as create a direct path to the care kitchen. 12.How is Steeden different from others working in care? Jet lag! 16 The travel time is too fast for the human body to adjust easily. Long distance air travel to a new time zone disrupts (打乱) three important senses: the sense of place, the sense of time, and the sense of well-being. Sense of place: To some degree, all locations are geographically and even chemically different from one another. Humans, like all living things, have a strong sense of place. 17 Sense of time: We all also have a natural sense of time that is linked to our sense of place. Our bodies function on a program that takes about a day to run. 18 This is why travel to a distant time zone makes us miss the usual hometown patterns of something as simple as the times of sunrise and sunset. Sense of well-being: We have a sense of well-being when we are healthy and happy. 19 That is why flying to a new environment and time zone often causes a disruption in our sense of well-being. For thousands of years, people didn’t experience disruption in their sense of time and place because there were no rapid means of transportation. 20 However, although we can travel by plane now, our bodies have not yet adapted to long-distance air travel. That is why we suffer the jet lag. A. The invention of the airplane changed all this. B. Jet lag results from traveling a long distance to a new zone. C. They sense the different qualities of dawn, noon, and midnight. D. We can make the effort to overcome the jet lag. E. This sense is strongly connected to our senses of place and time. F. It took weeks, months, years, or even generations to travel great distances. G. This makes people homesick for familiar surroundings and wish for their own bed. 第二部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分55分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 The easy way isn’t always easiest.
