The earliest Mother's Day celebrations date back to ancient Greece in honour of Rhea, the Mother of Gods. During the 1600s, England celebrated a day called "mothering Sunday". Celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent(四旬斋),"mothering Sunday" honoured the mothers England. During the time many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy.AS most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday, the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along. As Christianity(基督教) spread throughout Europe, the celebration changed to honour the "Mother Church"---the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival combined with mothering Sunday celebration. People began honouring their mothers as well as the church. In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe as a day devoted to peace. Then in 1907Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign(运动) to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd day Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia. Ms Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessmen, and politicians demanding to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement that Mother's Day was a national holiday and it was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May. While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the 2nd Sunday of May. 21.What is the author's purpose in writing the first paragraph? ______ A. A. give readers some information B. persuade readers C. report a story D. amuse readers B Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making it possible for companies to monitor workers’ behavior in great detail and in real time. Start to slack off (懈怠), and AI could talk to your boss. One company offering such services is London-based start-up Status Today. Its AI platform relies on a regular supply of employee data, including everything from the files you access to when you use a key card. From this, it builds a picture of how employees normally function and signals any unusual performance. The idea is to spot when someone might become a security risk by doing something different from their usual behavioral patterns. “All of this gives us fingerprint of a user, so if we think the fingerprint doesn’t match, we raise a warning”, says Mircea Dumitrescu, the company’s chief technology officer. The system also aims to catch employee actions that could accidentally cause a security breach (漏洞), like opening malware (恶意软件).“We’re not monitoring if your computer has a virus.” says Dumitrescu. “We’re monitoring human behaviors.” But catching the security breach means monitoring everyone, and the AI can also be used to track employee productivity. “It seems like they are just using the reputation of AI to give an air of lawfulness to old-fashioned workplace surveillance (监视),” says Javier Ruiz Diaz of digital campaigning organization the Open Rights Group. “You have a right to privacy and you shouldn’t be expected to give that up at work.” Exactly how companies use the system will be up to them, but it’s hard to shake the picture of an AI constantly looking over employees’ shoulders. “It will bother people, and that could be counterproductive if it affects their behavior,” says Paul Bemal at the University of East Anglia. Phil Legg at the University of the West of England says it will never catch every security risk. “If people know they’re being monitored, they can change their behavior,” he says. 25.According to the text, AI monitors employees by ________. A. taking pictures of them B. getting access to their data C. signaling their usual performance D. catching their actions 26.What’s Javier Ruiz Diaz’s attitude towards the system? A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Uncaring. D. Negative. 27.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. Security breach. B. Employees’ productivity. C. The right to privacy. D. Workplace surveillance. 28.Phil Legg’s concern about the system suggests that ________. A. it is too risky to be used at work B. it will affect employees’ emotions C. it may not be so effective as expected D. it will encourage employee, productivity C Dear Alcohol, You’ve been around forever. I can remember all the pain you’ve caused me. Do you remember the night when you almost took my father’s life? I do. He loves you. Sometimes I think he loves you more than he loves me. He’s addicted to you,to the way you promise to rid him of his problems only to cause more of them. You just sat back and laughed as his car went turning through the street, crashing into two other cars. He wasn’t the only one badly hurt by you that night. Do you remember the night of my first high school party? My friends were intrigued by you. They treated you as if they were never going to see you again, drinking all of you that they could.I spent two hours that night helping my friends who had fallen head over heels for you. “I’m so embarrassed,” they said as I held their hair back so that they could throw up. “I’m sorry,” they said when I called taxis for them, walking them out and paying the driver in advance. “This won’t happen again,” they said as they were sent to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped. Two 15-year-old girls slept in hospital beds that night due to you. Do you remember the night when you took advantage of my 17-year-old neighbor who had to drive to pick up his sister from her dance lesson? Do you know how we all felt when he hit another car head-on and killed two people in the other car? He died the next morning, too. His sister walked home from her dance lesson, and passed police cars and a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk just two blocks away from the dance studio. She didn’t realize her brother was among them at all. She never saw him again. And it was all your fault. I wish you’d walk out of my life forever. I don’t want anything to do with you. Look at all the pain you’ve caused. Sure, you’ve made people happy too from time to time. But the damage you’ve caused in the lives of millions is not excusable. Stop attracting the people I love! Then, reading through a magazine, she saw a photo of a poor Haitian boy, and his belly bloated(肿胀). "I thought, this kid has nothing," says Susan. The image stayed with her, and she considered doing something to help. "I decided I would use my talents to throw birthday parties for homeless kids," says Susan. For the next four years, Susan and her husband, Stephen, took time out from parenthood to visit shelters to determine how best to pull off the parties. Finally, Susan launched the Birthday Party Project, a nonprofit organization, and called on friends and family to help decorate Dallas's Family Gateway Shelter with balloons and colorful strips, celebrating the birthdays of 11 boys and girls. 60 more homeless kids attended the celebration. "The first party was better than I could have ever imagined," says Susan. Now Susan and her staff of three paid employees work with regional volunteers, also called "birthday enthusiasts(爱好者)", to plan monthly themed parties at 15shelters across the country. Some of the shelters house abused or abandoned kids. Each child celebrating a birthday that month gets a $30gift, a decorative place mat, and an individual cake or cupcake. One of Susan's favorite parts of each party is when the kids make a wish and blow out the candles. "They rarely get a chance to dream big," says Susan.
