My in-laws lived from hand to mouth, so we didn’t expect any help from them. My parents lived a great distance away, and I was too ashamed to let them know about our situation. My husband was trying to earn a living with an old pick-up truck, carrying groceries for local shopkeepers, but it was constantly breaking down. It took almost all the money we had it fixed. The truck was also the only means of transportation for us. We lived in the countryside, and we always used the back door because the driveway led to it. One winter evening, I stepped outside to take a bag of trash to the barrel and almost tripped over something. It was nearly dark, and I had to bend down to see what it was. I could hardly believe my eyes. There sat a large basket loaded with food. It was heavy, so I called my husband to carry it into the house. Once inside, we discovered two loaves of bread, some butter, several cans of vegetables, a can of orange sauce, and a large turkey. There was so much that I can’t remember it all, but it was everything we needed to fix a wonderful dinner—everything except potatoes. A little while later I remembered that I hadn’t taken the trash to barrel. By now it was dark, so I had to turn on the yard light— and that’s when I spotted a small bag of potatoes on the porch. That dinner was the best I can remember. We won’t able to thank our donators, though, because we never found out who had been so generous in helping a struggling young family. Whoever it was, we are forever grateful. 21. How did the author’s husband support the family? A. By starting a garage. B. By selling food door to door. C. By delivering goods. D. By working as a shop assistant. 22. How did the author feel when she saw the basket? A. She was annoyed. B. She was terrified. C. She was astonished. D. She felt a sense of relief. 23. What may be the best title for the text? A. A tale of potatoes B. A helping hand in time C. A reward from a stranger D. A struggling young couple B One of the latest trends(趋势) in American childcare is Chinese au pairs. Au Pair in Stamford, for example, has got increasing numbers of requests for Chinese au pairs from zero to around 4,000 since 2004. And that‘s true all across the country. “I thought it would be very useful for him to learn Chinese at an early age,” Joseph Stocke, the managing director of a company, says of his 2-year-old son. “I would at least like to give him the chance to use the language in the future.” After only six months of being cared for by a 25-year-old woman from China, the boy can already understand basic Chinese daily expressions, his dad says. Li Drake, a Chinese native raising two children in Minnesota with an American husband, had another reason for looking for an au pair from China: She didn‘t want her children to miss out on their roots. “Because I am Chinese, my husband and I wanted the children to keep exposed to( 接 触 ) the language and culture.” she says. “Staying with a native speaker is better for children than simply sitting in a classroom,” says Suzanne Flynn, a professor in language education of Children. “But parents must understand that just one year with au pair is unlikely to produce wonders. Complete mastery demands continued learning until the age of 10 or 12.” The popularity of au pairs from china has been strengthened by the increasing numbers of American parents who want their children to learn Chinese. It is expected that American demand for au pairs will continue to rise in the next few years. 24. What does that term “au pair” in the text mean? A. A mother raising her children on her own. B. A child learning a foreign language at home. C. A professor in language education of children. D. A young foreign woman taking care of children. 25. Li Drake has her children study Chinese because she wants them ______. A. to live in China some day B. to speak the language at home C. to catch up wit other children D. to learn about the Chinese culture 26. What can we infer from the text? A. Learning Chinese is becoming popular In America. B. Educated women do better in looking after children. C. Chinese au pairs need to improve their English Skills. D. Children can learn a foreign language well in six months. C Biophysicist Hugh Herr was a climbing talent. He would spend summers with his family from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in distant destinations across the United States, including Alaska and the Rockies. From a very young age, Herr rapidly progressed to climbing steeper and steeper mountains. When he was seventeen years old, Herr set out with a partner to climb Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. The highest peak in the northeastern United States, the mountain is famous for changeable and extreme weather. Their intention was to take a route that included an 800-foot ice wall. But Herr and his climbing partner became lost near the top during a snowstorm and what was meant a single day turned into a four-day painful experience. They both suffered frostbite during negative twenty-degree weather. After their eventual rescue and months of effort by a medical team, both of Herr’s legs were cut off below the knee. “When I was first fit with prostheses( 假 肢 ), about two months after the surgery, I was just shocked at how simple they were,” Herr said. “Basically, sticks if you would. I just said to myself, ‘You’re kidding me. This can’t be all that exists.’ But it was true. That was in 1982.” Not discouraged by the initial assessment(最初的评估) that he would never climb mountains again, Herr started making new prostheses in a machine shop. He said that two weeks after being fit with traditional prostheses, he was rock climbing again. This time he was equipped with prostheses of his own design. The same energy he brought to rock faces, Herr brought to the laboratory. In MIT’s Media Lab, Herr continues to push the boundaries of prosthetics(修复学). His aim is twofold: to assist people with disabilities and to strengthen human capabilities, all with bionics(仿生学). Justin Pratt, a certified prosthetist of the Osser Academy, said these kinds of motorized prosthetics are “of the future.” “Bionics is pretty much the way it [prosthetics] is progressing,” he said, pointing out that bionics is becoming more attainable, Herr lifts his pant leg to show the world’s first bionic foot and calf system, which is sold by his startup company, called BiOM. It’s a complex device of shiny metal, wires and machinery. 27. What caused Hugh Herr’s injury? A. His inexperience. B. The freezing weather. C. Too much ice on the mountain. D. His partner’s inaccurate judgment. 28. How did Hugh Herr feel about his initial prostheses? A. He was excited about them. B. He felt hopeful because of them. C. He showed great curiosity about them. D. He expressed dissatisfaction with them. 29. What does the author stress by saying the underlined sentence? A. Herr’s view about bionics. B. Herr’s interest in technology. C. We eat takeout, delivered and packaged meals. 31 “Over the past three decades, people have started eating out more than ever before and buying more prepared foods at the grocery store, which tend to contain more fat, salt and sugar than their home-made foods,” noted US healthy living website Spark People. 32 It encourages us to value the time we spend preparing, sharing and consuming food, as a recent USA today article put it. It all started in 1986 with the efforts of Slow Food’s founding father, Italian activist Carlo Petrini, who wanted to bring back food varieties and flavors that had gone dark in the face of industrialization. 33 Now his idea is almost the mainstream. Starting at the table, the movement promotes an unhurried way of life founded on the idea that everyone has a right to cooking pleasure, and that everyone must also take responsibility to “protect the heritage (遗产) of food, tradition and culture that make this celebration of the senses possible”, wrote The Phnom Penh Post. “ 34 . It means turning down the speed at which we eat and increasing the amount of time we spend dining together with other people,” Althea Zanecosky, spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, told The Huf fington Post.” 35 Dinner table conversations keep families together,” noted the Belgian non-profit organization Greenfudge. A. It is a way to bring back the social togetherness of yesterday. B. It seems that we have adapted our foods to our fast-paced lives. C. However, some students can be seen running on the lawn, picking flowers or kicking young trees on purpose. Some even spit in public or throw rubbish everywhere. Their deeds have already done great harm to our school environment and it’s time we did something to change the situation. I think everyone is responsible for the beauty of our campus and if each of us avoids doing anything improper, our campus will no doubt become more beautiful. Every effort matters. Let’s take action now! Li Hua查看更多
