It’s poverty, low attendance, or bad classmate influences. But above all is the value and importance of human connection —— relationships.‎ ‎ A colleague said to me one time, “They don’t pay me to like the kids. They pay me to teach a lesson. That’s all.” Well, I said to her, “You know, kids don’t learn from people they don’t like. Your year is going to be long and boring, dear.”‎ ‎ I have had classes that were so low that I cried. I wondered, how am I going to take this group in nine months from where they are to where they need to be? And it was difficult. So I came up with a bright idea. I gave a quiz with 20 questions. A student missed 18. I put a “+2” on his paper and a big smiley face. He said, “Ms. Pierson, why’d you put a smiley face?” I said, “Because you got two right. You didn’t miss them all. And when we review this, won’t you do better?” He said, “Yes, madam, I can do better.”‎ ‎ You see, ”- 18” suck(吞没) all the life out of you, but “+2” said, “I am not all bad.”‎ ‎ Will you like all your children? Of course, not. And you know your toughest kids are never absent.‎ ‎ But teaching and learning should bring joy. Every child deserves a champion, and an adult who will never give up on them should believe they can become the best that they can possibly be.‎ ‎24. What’s the main reason for some students to leave school according to the author?‎ ‎ A. They could not afford the education.‎ ‎ B. They didn’t get on well with the teachers.‎ ‎ C. The school couldn’t admit so many students.‎ ‎ D. They followed the examples of their classmates.‎ ‎25. What would the student who got 18 of the twenty questions wrong feel when he saw the “+2” and a big smiley face?‎ ‎ A. He would feel hurt by the teacher.‎ ‎ B. He would feel ashamed at the result.‎ ‎ C. He would feel pleased to have passed the exam.‎ ‎ D. He would feel encouraged.‎ ‎26. Which words can best describe the author?‎ ‎ A. Caring and considerate.‎ ‎ B. Ambitious and sympathetic.‎ ‎ C. Strict and demanding.‎ ‎ D. Sociable and Creative.‎ ‎27. Where is this passage probably taken from?‎ ‎ A. An educational research paper.‎ ‎ B. An advertisement in a newspaper.‎ ‎ C. A speech by an excellent teacher.‎ ‎ D. A storybook written by a teacher.‎ ‎ ‎ C ‎ Scientists have found living organisms trapped in crystals (晶体) that could be 50,000 years old.‎ ‎ The organisms were found in a hot, but beautiful cave system in Naica, Mexico. These ancient life forms can be seen only with a microscope. Penelope Boston, who leads the Astrobiology ‎ Institute at NASA, the space agency of the United States, says the ancient microbes were able to live by eating minerals such as iron.‎ She spoke about the discovery recently at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. If the findings are confirmed, they will show how microbes can survive in extreme conditions. Forty different kinds of microbes and some viruses were found in the underground area. The genetic structures of these organisms are 10 percent different from those of their nearest relatives.‎ The caves in Naica are 800 kilometers deep. They were once used for mining lead. Before the miners began working in the caves, the area was separated from the surface and the outside world. Some of the caves are as big as the large religious centers built during Europe’s Middle Ages. There are crystals covering the walls. The caves are so hot that scientists must wear special clothing to keep cool. The clothing keeps the crystals safe from human germs (病菌) or other damage. Boston said the researchers could only work for about 20 minutes at a time before they had to go to a room that was 38 degrees Celsius to cool down.‎ NASA officials would not let Boston share her findings with scientific experts before last week’s announcement. So scientists could not say much about the findings. But Norine Noonan, a biologist with the University of South Florida, said she believed them. “Why are we surprised?” Noonan asked. “As a biologist, I would say life on earth is extremely tough and extremely colorful.”‎ Boston is also studying microbes commonly found inside caves in other countries, such as Ukraine and the United States. These microbes appear to be impossible to kill. Boston said they show how difficult life on earth can be.‎ ‎28. The existence of the ancient microbes relies on ________ .‎ ‎ A. surrounding insects    B. eating minerals ‎ C. diverse plants    D. absorbing air ‎29. What can we infer about the caves in Naica from the passage?‎ ‎ A. The walls were built during Middle Ages.‎ ‎ B. The temperature in the caves is quite low.‎ ‎ C. The environment in the caves is difficult to adapt to.‎ ‎ D. The caves have been explored since they were formed.‎ ‎30. What is the biologist Norine Noonan’s attitude towards the findings?‎ ‎ A. Neutral.    B. Doubtful. C. Positive.    D. Indifferent.‎ ‎31. What’s the main idea of the passage?‎ ‎ A. Scientists discover 50,000-year-old “super life” in Mexico.‎ ‎ B. Caves provide living environment for living organisms.‎ ‎ C. Microbes show great power to survive in terrible conditions.‎ ‎ D. Living organisms bring hope to scientific research.‎ D ‎ ‎ “Heaven is where the police are English, the cooks are French, the mechanics are German, the lovers are Italian and everything is organized by the Swiss. Hell(地狱)is where the police are German, the cooks are English, the mechanics are French, the lovers are Swiss, and everything is organized by the Italians.”‎ ‎ Obviously the national stereotypes(模式化的思想) in this old joke are generalizations (普遍化) , but such stereotypes are often said to “exist for a reason” . Is there actually a sliver(裂片,碎片)of truth in them? Not likely, an international research team now says.‎ ‎ “National and cultural stereotypes do play an important role in how people see themselves and others ,and being aware that these are not dependable is a useful thing ” said study author Robert McCrae of the National Institute on Aging. “These are in fact unfounded stereotypes. They don't come from looking around you ” McCrae said.‎ ‎ If national stereotypes aren't rooted in real experiences, then where do they come from? One possibility is that they reflect national values, which may become known from historical events. For example, many historians have argued that the spirit of American individualism(个人主义)has its origins in the experiences of the pioneers in the Old West. ‎ ‎ Social scientists such as psychologist Richard Robins have given several other possible explanations for stereotypes and why they may be incorrect. Robins notes that some stereotypes may have been correct at one point in history and then remained unchanged while the culture changed. ‎ ‎ We may be “hard-wired” , to some degree , to keep incorrect stereotypes , since we are less likely to notice and remember information that is different from our stereotypes. Generally, ‎ according to Robins , when we meet people who are different from our stereotypes, we see them as unique individuals rather than typical national or cultural groups. ‎ ‎32. The stereotype about Italian is ________.‎ ‎ A. friendly and good-tempered ‎ B. dreamy and impractical ‎ C. romantic but disorganized ‎ D. strict but thoughtful ‎33. Why national stereotypes are not always correct according to social scientists?‎ ‎ A. Because they are formed by individual historians.‎ ‎ B. Because what was true in the past may not be true at present.‎ ‎ C. Because generalizations are made through personal experiences.‎ ‎ D. Because people tend to have false ideas about other cultures.‎ ‎34. According to the research team led by McCrae, national stereotypes are ________.‎ ‎ A. interesting B. harmful C. unreliable D. humorous ‎35. What does the underlined word “hard-wired” in the last paragraph probably mean?‎ ‎ A. fixed B. forgetful C. anxious D. helpless ‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ ‎ After spending a term in Spain, I have been trying to work out which common impressions on Spain have some truth in them and which don’t. ___36___.‎ ‎ Spain is always warm and sunny.
