I'm Katie.” I said. We were not identical twins;we looked quite different. She could defeat Snow White in a beauty contest!Compared to Christine,I felt like one of Cinderella’s stepsisters. One Saturday Christine gave me a painting lesson because I was always attempting to be artistic too. But I knocked over the vase of flowers , spilling water onto Christine’s painting. Instead of becoming angry, though, she turned the whole mess into a dreamy masterpiece. You could look at it five different ways and see five different things. With this brilliant creation, she won First Prize in the art competition. I really envied her,but I knew it wasn’t her fault and I was the one with wild, unmanageable hair and no talent. Joining Christine’s basketball team was my latest effort to be like her. On the way to the gym,I'd made up my mind to give my best performance in that day’s game. I made preparations with great enthusiasm. “Christine, here!”I tossed her a ball. But it was too high, she leapt for it,it slipped through her fingers and crashed into the tape recorder that was used to play the national anthem (国歌) before each game. I muttered (轻声低语) apologies as I picked up the broken pieces of the recorder. Coach looked at the mess and asked,“How are we going to play the song now?” Christine suggested,“Let Katie sing it!She’s always singing at home.” Coach asked. “Would you?”I found myself nodding. Coach announced the national anthem and everyone stood. Standing before a microphone,I looked up to the flag. The notes seemed to flow from deep inside me,and my voice was steady and clear. When I finished, the gym was silent. Then it was filled with applause. As the game started, teammates patted my back and gave me the “thumbs up” sign. Laura Jamison said, “You should try out for the school musical!” I Nodded and said that I might. The next morning Hillary Barnes stopped me in the hallway and asked,“Are you the twin who sings?” “Yes,that’s me,”I answered, grinning (露齿笑) as I walked to class. 21. A.why Christine could win the art competition B.how dissimilar the twins were in appearance C.who was the most popular girl at school D.what the twins characters were like 22. What can we learn from Paragraph 4? A.Christine was unpleasant to her sister. B.Katie showed a lot of ability in painting too. C.Katie took a reasonably balanced view of her sister. B.she wanted to repair the damage she had caused. C.she thought Katie should be punished. D.she would like to help the coach. 24. What is the message of the story? A.Bad situations help become popular. B.Unsuccessful attempts are well worth the effort. C.People should always be nice to others. D.People are talented in different ways. B Sherry, a young friend of mine, suffers from insomnia (失眠) but she’s found a new way to deal with her sleeplessness. Instead of just tossing and turning in bed all night or reading a book, she turns on the computer in her living room and connects with other night owls through a live streaming (网络直播) app. As she hums (哼唱) along to pop tunes or talks about her day, people will post messages on her computer screen and sometimes even send her virtual gifts. Sherry is just one of hundreds of millions who have been drawn to live streaming, the hottest new trend in social media, which lets people share their lives spontaneously in real time. Live streaming, itself, isn’t new. People have been able to watch sports events and lectures live online for years. But with new apps that became available in 2007, viewers can now interact with what they see on the screen by posting questions and comments, and this has turned ordinary people, like Sherry, into stars of their own reality TV series. However, this new trend has also drawn the attention of government regulators who are concerned about the content of some live streaming broadcasts. In April, 19 live streaming platforms were convicted ( 判 罪 ) of allowing “improper” content to be broadcast. Defining “improper” can be difficult, but, generally, it means anything that has to do with sex or politics or is considered morally harmful. And there is now a new law that requires live streaming apps such as Douyu, YY and Yingke to hold a license to operate and to keep recordings of broadcasts and on-screen comments. My friend Sherry has nothing to fear from the government regulators. If anything, her broadcasts are extremely dull (sorry Sherry!), as are most people’s broadcasts. But dullness is a small problem compared with the bigger problem of letting strangers see too much of your personal life. You’ve probably been warned about giving out personal information online and the same is true with live streaming. It can be dangerous. If you’re not careful, strangers can find out where you live, where you go to school and where you spend your free time. Broadcasting live from your living room can be fun, but remember to be safe and please, please, please… don’t be dull! 25. Paragraph 1 mainly describes a person who __________. A. fails to sleep soundly at night B. likes sharing interesting stories with others C. is attracted to live streaming D. is ashamed of singing songs before a large audience 26. It can be learned from the article that __________. A. live streaming is not popular with grown-ups B. live streaming has nothing to do with politics C. live streaming does no harm to teenagers D. live streaming has existed for nearly a decade 27. The government regulators have made several laws to make sure __________. A. the content of live streaming broadcasts is appropriate B. the quality of live streaming apps is excellent C. the live streaming apps are not available to teenagers D. the users of live streaming apps do not make comments 28. The author’s attitude towards live streaming is __________. A. supportive B. unclear C. casual D. critical C It’s true that teens don’t get enough sleep, but changing the school starting time would have a chaotic effect and throw everyone off balance. Scientists have shown that teens are more active later at night than children and adults,so most teens are probably staying up later for whatever reasons. “The researchers measured the presence of the sleeppromoting hormone (荷尔蒙) in teenagers’ saliva (唾液) at different time of the day. They learned that the hormone levels rise later at night than they do in children and adults and remain at a higher level later in the morning. Measuring the hormone in the saliva is a good way to show that most teens have sleep problems, but changing school schedules isn’t the best way to fix this. Most people arguing against changing school schedules would say that it would only cause teens to stay up and wake up later, thus leaving them with the same problem. The biggest problem schools would come across from changing their schedules would be the after school and job conflicts students and teachers would meet. Teachers reported that students were more alert, and research showed that afterschool sports and jobs would suffer. Students in that area might have been able to deal with less time for jobs and sports somehow, but some of them have practice and earlier plans that would become conflicted if this change were to occur. Most students rarely have time to play a sport and do homework before 9 or 10 o’clock. Opening schools later may have worked for some areas, but the reality is often very different. 29.The meaning of the underlined word “chaotic” in the 1st paragraph is close to________. A.positive B.negative C.apparent D.ambiguous (含糊不清的) 30.Most teens have sleep problems because________. A.they are more active than children and adults B.school work takes up most of their time C.their hormone levels are higher later at night D.they probably like staying up for no reason 31.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.There are many conflicts between students and teachers. B.Some of the teachers have practice and earlier plans. C.Most students are able to do sports and homework before 9∶00. D.Ways to solve students’ sleep problem vary from area to area. 32.The passage mainly develops by________. A.giving reasons B.showing examples C.comparing facts D.offering solutions D E-Sports, the New NBA? The crowd roars. Players jump out of their seats for a group hug while their opponents hang their head in despair. Commentators in more than a dozen languages declare the “ending of a dynasty” to more than 30 million online viewers. Soon after, the victors take center-stage in the Bird’s Nest Stadium to pick up a trophy and a check worth over $1.5 million. This is no Olympic event; it is the final of a gaming event: the League of Legends (LOL, 《英雄联盟》) World Championships 2017. Many cite the game StarCraft (《星际争霸》) as the beginning of this phenomenon known as e-sports. Created in North America , the game began to take root in South Korea during the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997. While many young people had trouble finding jobs, they turned to playing StarCraft as a way to pass their time, and soon the game developed into a nation-wide craze. Players would form teams and live together to train more than ten hours a day to get their chance at becoming champions. It is not unlike what professional athletes undergo to achieve success. Television stations began to broadcast tournaments and fans would gather in the hundreds of thousands to witness the events. Nearly ten years later, LOL is taking the fire from this small nation and spreading it across the world. Many LOL players today enjoy a celebrity-like status that outshines even that of athletes. In China, the name “Uzi” (简自豪,中国《英雄联盟》职业选手) is almost a household name among the younger generation. In fact, the “fire” of e-sports has gone beyond LOL and is now seen in many other games. Of course, Chinese parents still express great anxiety over gaming, but what was once unheard-of — a Chinese parent supporting his or her child’s decision to become a professional gamer — is now a reality. For those who might not have the gift for becoming professional gamers, fear not, for there are many other opportunities associated with e-sports. For those of you who read this article and decide: “That’s it! I am never doing homework again!”, I have a word of caution: Professional gaming is not an easy path. It is not something so easily achieved as playing on your smartphone instead of listening in class. So, if you’ve made your decision, be ready to work hard and face every challenge that comes your way. 33. According to the article, when and where did e-sports gain popularity? A. In North America, in 1997. B. In North America, before 1997. C. In South Korea, in 1997. D. In South Korea, before 1997. 34. In the author’s opinion, if you want to become a professional gamer, you must ____. A. be supported by your parents. B. get prepared for lots of challenges. C. form teams and start living together. D. train at least ten hours a day. 35. According to the passage, which of the following statements are true? ① China won the League of Legends World Championships 2017. ② In China, most parents now consider gaming a promising career. ③ One can never become a professional gamer by simply playing on a smartphone. ④ One doesn’t have to be a gamer to get involved in the e-sports industry.
