英语卷·2017届河北省定州中学高三(承智班)下学期周练(4-16)(2017-04)

河北定州中学2016-2017学年第二学期 高三承智班英语周练试题(4.16)‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ 一、阅读理解 ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Good news for giant panda lovers: The cute and cuddly creature has just been brought back from the brink of extinction.‎ The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) downgraded the species from “endangered” to “vulnerable” as the union released its updated Red List on Sept 4 at Hawaii.‎ The downgrade came after IUCN data suggested that there were 1,864 giant pandas in the wild in China in 2014 — their population has grown by 17 percent in the decade leading up to 2014.‎ Chinese conservation efforts, including forest protection and reforestation, are considered to be the driving force behind the animal’s resurgence.‎ ‎“It’s all about restoring the habitats,” Craig Hilton-Taylor, head of the IUCN Red List, told the BBC.‎ The number of panda reserves in China has also jumped to 67, from 13 in 1992. Nearly two-thirds of all wild pandas live in these reserves, according to the World Wildlife Fund.‎ ‎“Just by restoring the panda’s habitat, that’s given them back their space and made food available to them,” Hilton-Taylor said.‎ A loss of habitats, on the contrary, was what caused the number of pandas to drop to just over 1,200 in the 1980s, Hilton-Taylor added.‎ Apart from giant pandas, the Tibetan Antelope has also moved from “endangered” to “near threatened”. According to a statement from IUCN, the animal’s numbers dwindled severely — dropping from around 1 million to an estimated 65,000-72,500 in the 1980s and early 1990s — due to commercial poaching. Rigorous(严格的) protection has since been enforced to protect the beasts and the population is now likely to be between 100,000 and 150,000.‎ Despite the improved statuses, wild animals like the giant panda and the Tibetan Antelope still face great challenges. The IUCN warned, for example, that ongoing threats from climate change could eliminate more than 35 percent of the panda’s bamboo habitat in the next 80 years, which would reverse the species recent gains.‎ ‎1.What does the underlined word in pagagraph 1 mean?‎ A. dangerous and threatened. B. safe and sound.‎ C. weak and easily hurt. D. normal and common.‎ ‎2.Which of the following can account for pandas’ living improvement?‎ A. Better climate. B. More built reserves.‎ C. Well restored habitats. D. Aroused public awareness.‎ ‎3.The passage is written in order to ________.‎ A. convince B. inform C. argue D advocate ‎4.What does the last paragraph imply?‎ A. The climate will influence the threatened species.‎ B. We humans still have a long way to go to protect the endangered species.‎ C. Pandas will go extinct for lack of abundant food.‎ D. Habitats for giant pandas will decrease sharply.‎ ‎ ‎ It's true that many dads in the wild aren't interested in parenting, but there are some that work pretty hard to give their little ones a good start. Maybe one of these dads will make you remember your own dad!‎ The male giant water bug doesn’t seem to mind a heavy load on his back for his kids. The female puts about 100 to 150 eggs on the back of the male, and then she leaves. Once the female is gone, the male has to look after the eggs. It usually takes one to two weeks for the eggs to hatch. The father giant water bug jumps around to make sure the growing eggs get enough air and water. All this time he can't fly because of the weight of the eggs growing rapidly on his back.‎ Now let's turn to the male stickleback fish. When the mother leaves after laying her eggs, the father tends his young. If the young fish go too far away, their father helps with their safe return by carrying them back in his mouth. The male stickleback looks after all his young — as many as 100 — until they can live on their own.‎ A similar example can be found in emperor penguins living in cold areas. The male emperor penguin goes without food while looking after his egg until it hatches. For about 62 to 67 days, the egg stays on top of the father's feet, in very cold temperatures that drop down to -39℃. As a result, the father may lose nearly 50 percent of his body weight while waiting for his baby penguin to be born!‎ ‎5.What do we know about the giantwater bug?‎ A. It is unable to fly.‎ B. The eggs grow on the father's back.‎ C. The male must keep still to hatch the eggs. ‎ D. The female looks after her eggs together with the male.‎ ‎6.During the hatching period, the male emperor penguin ________.‎ A. is unable to eat B. is fed by the female C. tries to lose some weight ‎ D. can't stand the cold weather ‎7.What is the best title for the text?‎ A. Mr. Moms in the Wild B. Animals Do Have Feelings C. Nature Loves Us like Our Dad D. Childbirth in the Animal Kingdom ‎ ‎ More and more people, especially in developed countries, arc becoming older. In the ‎ United States there are currently over 40 million people aged 65 and over, more than 10 million are over 85. Caring for these senior citizens is becoming a necessity, and a big industry.‎ ‎ Traditionally, care for the elderly has taken place in an extended family, where grandparents live at home and are helped by other family members. However, as more and more young people enter the work force full time they cannot care for their parents or grandparents any more. There are more than 10,000 organizations that provide care for the elderly. More than 1,000 were founded last year alone. Ordinary people quit their jobs and start private care centers, where they offer senior citizens their services.‎ ‎ One of the most difficult aspects of such an organization is finding the right people to do the job. Caring for the elderly is not an easy task. It requires skill and patience. Among daily tasks are preparing meals, washing older people, or simply keeping them company. Many care workers quit because they find it very depressing(令人沮丧的). It is important to help the elderly stay mobile as long as possible. When they cannot walk or climb stairs they need more help: thus costs become higher. Care workers concentrate on exercises to help them stay mobile. In many cases assisted living replaces round-the-clock health care. Elderly people need help with some daily tasks but can mostly live on their own. It also costs less than full nursing care.‎ ‎ While wealthy Americans turn to private care centers, those who are poorer cannot pay for the services because Medicare does not cover it. Not all countries offer health care provided by the state. In Asia and Africa, for example, older people are cared for by family members.‎ ‎8.Why are more and more private care centers started?‎ A. Many people can't find other jobs. B. Caring for the elderly is an easy task.‎ C. Many young people take full time jobs. D. Care workers can get well paid.‎ ‎9.Who pays for the service in the care center?‎ A. Medicare. B. The state. C. The family. D. Care centers.‎ ‎10.What is the third paragraph in the text mainly about?‎ A. Reasons to start a care center. B. Skills that care workers need.‎ C. Costs for nursing care. D. Difficulties in running a care centre.‎ ‎11.How many daily tasks for nursing care are mentioned in the text?‎ A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.‎ ‎ ‎ When we know somewhere well, we say we “ know it like the back of our hand ”. But new research has shown that we don’t actually know as much about our hands as we think we do.‎ Wider and shorter Professor Matthew Longo at the University of London and his team did an experiment, covering the left hands of 100 people. Then they asked the people to point to where they thought their fingertips and knuckles (指关节) were. They made some quite big mistakes.‎ ‎“People think their hand is wider than it actually is,” said Longo. The fingers also seem shorter than they are. This mistake gets worse as you go across the hand from the thumb to the little finger.‎ Sense of position ‎"It is connected to our sense of position,” explained Longo. This is our ability to tell where different parts of our bodies are, even when we can’t see them. “It tells us whether a joint is straight or not "he said. It also tells us whether we are going up or down in an elevator. All this information comes from signs from nerves in real time. It’s like our brain has maps — maps that show the size and shape of our body. “This experiment tried to find those maps,” said Longo.‎ Strength of feeling But these maps make mistakes. These mistakes may be made because of how the brain understands different parts of the skin. “Our brains ‘see” areas as larger where the skin feels touch strongly,” said Longo. Body parts don’t appear as their true size, but appear bigger or smaller depending on how strongly they feel touch. Our lips, for example, have more nerves than our nose. So brain “sees” lips on its map of the body as being bigger than our nose. The same thing happens for other parts of the body that have lots of nerves.‎ Longo believes that more research in this area may help us to understand eating problem better, because people suffering from these problems may not know their bodies properly.‎ ‎12.Which of following statement is TRUE about the experiment according to the article?‎ A. People think their body parts are larger than they actually are.‎ B. People’s fingers are actually shorter than they think.‎ C. People were asked to draw their hands from memory D. People made more mistakes about their little fingers length than their thumbs’ length.‎ ‎13.What does the underlined “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?‎ A. The new experiment.‎ B. The mistake people made.‎ C. The sizes of fingers and hands.‎ D. The location information.‎ ‎14.We can conclude from the article that ________.‎ A. the maps of people’s bodies form before they are born B. the maps of our body are based on information from nerves C. our sense of position depends on the interaction between parts of the body D. how we feel about our body shape is only decided by our sense of position ‎15.We can infer from the article that ________.‎ A. there are more nerves in the finger than in the hand B. our lips have a weaker sense of touch than our nose C. the hand feels touch more strongly than fingers do D. our sense of position should not be trusted because it is too often incorrect ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ 二、完形填空 I have recently been reflecting on the secret of our online success. The fingers also seem shorter than they are. This mistake gets worse as you go across the hand from the thumb to the little finger. 可知,人们会认为自己的手比实际的要大,手指比实际短,这个错误从大拇指到小拇指逐渐严重。故D项正确。‎ ‎13.B推理判断题。根据Wider and shorter中This mistake gets worse as you go across the hand from the thumb to the little finger. 可知,下文"It is connected to our sense of position,” explained Longo.划线单词it指的是This mistake,故选B。‎ ‎14.B推理判断题。根据Sense of position中All this information comes from signs from nerves in real time. It’s like our brain has maps — maps that show the size and shape of our body.可知,我们身体的地图是基于神经的信息。故选B。‎ ‎15.C推理判断题。根据Strength of feeling中“Our brains ‘see” areas as larger where the skin feels touch strongly,” said Longo. We are sure that the number will increase because with their incomes rising, more people can afford the journeys abroad.‎ At the same time, the seaside attracted a lot of people. However, the rate slightly dropped from 38% in 2006 to 31% in 2016, because the sea water is being polluted. The polluted seaside is likely to drive more visitors away.‎ The year 2016 saw a sharp increase in the number of people who went climbing and camping. The rate in 2016 is 34%, more than three times of that in 2006. The reason is that more and more people are eager to get close to nature.‎ ‎【解析】这是一篇利用图表的给材料作文。要求对比介绍人们的度假方式。主要用到过去时态和一般现在时。写作时不要逐句翻译,可适当增加细节以使行文连贯同时要把所提示的点写全,语句通顺,同时要注意准确运用时态、语态、上下文意思连贯,符合逻辑关系。根据句意适当使用并列连词,同时也要合理运用高级词汇和高级句子为文章增色添彩。注意:1. 词数120左右; 2.开头已给出,不计入总词数。‎
