As the number of this new “species” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name — phubbers(低头族). Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events eventually leads to the destruction of the world. Although the ending sounds overstated the damage phubbing can bring is real. Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. “Constantly bending your head to check your cell phone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted doctors as saying. “the neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching.” Also, staring at cell phones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report. But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported. It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight. 24.For what purpose does the author give the example of a cartoon in Paragragh2? His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed. C. He will cause the destruction of the world. D. He might get separated from his friends and family. 26.Which of the following may be the author’s attitude towards phubbing? A. Supportive. B. Optimistic. C. Opposed. D. Objective. 27.What may the passage talk about Next? A. Advice on how to use a cell phone. B. People addicted to phubbing. C. Consequences of phubbing. D. Measures to reduce the risks of phubbing. C Last summer I went through a training program and became a literacy volunteer. The training I received, though excellent, did not tell me how it was to work with a real student, however. When I began to discover what other people’s lives were like because they could not read, I realized the true importance of reading. My first student Marie was a 44-year-old single mother of three. In the first lesson, I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn’t know which bus to take. When I told her I would get her a bus schedule. She told me it would not help because she could not read it. She said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket, because she couldn’t always remember what she needed. Since she did not know words, she could not write out a shopping list. Also, she could only recognize items by sight, so if the product had a different label, she would not recognize it as the product she wanted. As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie’s self-confidence, which encouraged her to continue in her studies. She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarket. After this successful trip, she reported how self-confident she felt. At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son, Tony, a shy first grader, with his reading. She sat with him before he went to sleep and together they would read bedtime stories. When his eyes became wide with excitement as she read, pride was written all over her face, and she began to see how her own hard work in learning to read paid off. As she described this experience, I was proud of myself as well. I found that helping Marie to build her self-confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before. As a literacy volunteer, I learned a great deal about teaching and helping others. In fact, I may have learned more from the experience than Marie did. 28. What did the author do last summer? A. She worked in the supermarket. B. She helped someone to learn to read. C. She gave single mothers the help they needed. D. She went to a training program to help a literacy volunteer. 29. Why didn’t Marie go to the supermarket by bus at first? A. Because she liked to walk to the supermarket. B. Because she lived far away from the bus stop. C. Because she couldn’t afford the bus ticket. D. Because she couldn’t find the right bus. 30. How did Marie use to find the goods she wanted in the supermarket? A. She knew where the goods were in the supermarket. B. She asked others to take her to the right place. C. She managed to find the goods by their looks. D. She remembered the names of the goods. 31. Which of the following statements is TRUE about Marie? A. Marie could do things she had not been able to do before. B. Marie was able to read stories with the help of her son. C. Marie decided to continue her studies in school. D. Marie paid for her own lessons. D Perhaps you think you could easily add to your happiness with more money. Strange as it may seem, if you're unsatisfied, the issue is not a lack of means to meet your desires but a lack of desires—not that you cannot satisfy your tastes but that you don't have enough tastes. Real riches consist of well-developed and hearty capacities (能力) to enjoy life. Most people are already swamped(淹没) with things. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They live in too big a house with too many rooms, yet their house of life is a hut. Your house of life ought to be a mansion (豪宅) , a royal palace. Every new taste, every additional interest, every fresh enthusiasm adds a room. Here are several rooms your house of life should have. Art should be a desire for you to develop simply because the world is full of beautiful things. If you only understood how to enjoy them and feed your spirit on them, they would make you as happy as to find plenty of ham and eggs when you're hungry. Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly furnished room where you might find many an hour of rest and refreshment. To gain that love would go toward making you a rich person, for a rich person is not someone who has a library but who likes a library. Music like Mozart's and Bach's shouldn't be absent. Real riches are of the spirit. And when you've brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and makes you a little drunk, you have increased your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills. Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. No matter who you are, you would be more human, and your house of life would be better supported against the had days, if you could, and did, play a bit. Whatever rooms you might add to your house of life, the secret of enjoying life is to keep adding. 32. The author intends to tell us that____________. A. true happiness lies in achieving wealth by fair means B. big houses are people's most valued possessions C. big houses can in a sense bring richness of life D. true happiness comes from spiritual riches 33. The underlined sentence in the second paragraph probably implies that__________. A. however materially rich, they never seem to be satisfied B. however materially rich, they remain spiritually poor C. though their house is big, they prefer a simple life D. though their house is big, it seems to be a cage 34. It can be learned from the passage that __________. A. more money brings more happiness B. art is needed to make your house beautiful C. literature can enrich your spiritual life D. sports contribute mainly to your physical fitness 35. What would be the best title for the passage? A. House of Life B. Secret of Wealth C. Rest and Refreshment D. Interest and Enthusiasm 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 What do the world’s most successful people all have in common? By examining the work habits of over 150 greatest writers and artists and scientists, the researchers including Standford Professor Jeffrey Preffer found that high achievers like Robert Moses turn out to be all alike: Busy ! Busy! 36 In a study of general managers in industry, John Kotter reported that many of them worked 60 to 65 hours per week—which translates into at least six 10-hour days. The ability and willingness to work difficult and tiring hours has characterized many powerful figures. Energy and strength provide many advantages to those seeking to build power. Just Say No! The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say “no” to almost everything. And that’s what gives them the time to accomplish so much. 37 And focus means saying “no” to a lot of distractions(分神). Know What You Are! Ignore your weakness and keep improving your strengths. Don’t waste time exploring skill areas where you have little competence. Instead, focus on—and build on—your strengths. 38 . Create Good Luck! Luck is not magical—there is a science to it. Richard Wiseman studied lucky people for his book Luck Factor, and broke down what they do right. 39 By being more outgoing, open to new ideas, following the feeling that something is true, being optimistic, lucky people create possibilities. Does applying these principles to your life actually work? Wiseman created a “luck school” to test the ideas—and it was a success. In total, 80 percent of people who attended Luck School said that their luck had increased. 40 . A. Spend enough time to improve your weakness. B. Achievement requires focus. C. On average, these people reported that their luck had increased by more than 40 percent. D. High achievers never stop working and they never lose a minute. E. Busy people are more likely to be lucky. F. This means knowing who you are, what you are and what you are good at. G. Certain personality types are luckier because they behave in a way that offers the chance for good opportunities. Steve Jobs was born on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco, California.
