On my birthday, my grandfather, walking home with his hands full of groceries, fell and hit his head on the sidewalk. Just as we were leaving to meet him for dinner, we got the call that he was in the hospital. At first, I thought nothing of it, but when I heard the whole story, I couldn’t believe it. He hit his head so hard that he had a blood clot in his brain and it had to be operated on immediately, Everyone thought he would die.‎ Although my grandfather survived emergency brain surgery, he had complications (后遗症). He could hardly talk and he couldn’t walk. Shortly after, he was admitted to a nursing home. Today, he lives at home with my grandmother and is doing much better, but this isn’t about him. It’s about what I saw at that nursing home.‎ I saw something that many people haven’t seen, and some do often choose to ignore it, I saw more sadness in those days visiting the nursing home than I thought. In that one place were hundreds of old people who were alone and forgotten.‎ So what as to be done with the situation of the old? This is not an easy question, but something must be done. Perhaps groups in the community could assign each member to one nursing home patient with whom they could keep in regular contact. Maybe a school could focus on a nursing home and send cards, pictures and letters to residents. If periodic visits were arranged, I’m sure that for some, if not many, those students would be the only visitors they had all month. These are just a few ideas; we all need to work together.‎ I hope everyone to tour a local nursing home I further expect you to do something about it. You’ll brighten someone’s day, or maybe even his or her life.‎ ‎24.Why was the author’s grandfather sent to a nursing home?‎ A. Because of the nursing home’s good atmosphere.‎ B. Because of the grandfather’s bad physical condition.‎ C. Because family members wanted him to live outside.‎ D. Because there were many old people at the nursing home.‎ ‎25.What did the author think of the old people at the nursing home?‎ A. They deserved sympathy.‎ B. They were poor but kind.‎ C. They always forgot something D. They needed to care for students.‎ ‎26.What’s the fourth paragraph mainly about?‎ A. The author’s ways to look after old people in the community.‎ B. The author’s ideas of helping old people at the nursing home.‎ C. The author’s opinions about how to visit old people regularly.‎ D. The author’s reasons for sending old people to the nursing home.‎ ‎27.What’s the author’s wish according to the text?‎ A. Old people can live longer and have a happy family.‎ B. People can help old people when they fall down on the street.‎ C. People can pay attention to the old people at nursing homes.‎ D. Government should ask students to visit old people at the nursing home.‎ C Are you a morning person? You might not like the findings in this new research.‎ From a lack of air and drinking water to solar radiation, theoretical Mars pioneers face any number of potential obstacles to settling on the red planet. Now, scientists have found something else to add to the list: seriously messed-up biological clocks.‎ One day on Mars - which scientists refer to as the solar day, or“sol”- is 37 minutes longer than a day on Earth. A team of European scientists recently demonstrated why that could be a problem.‎ Circadian rhythms are the body’s natural cycles of rest and waking, which tend to follow roughly 24-hour light-dark cycles. These natural rhythms - which play a ‎ role in biological functions including brain wave activity and hormone production - can be interrupted by things like jet lag(时差)and night shift work.‎ For the study, the researchers compared mice with healthy, 24-hour circadian clocks to mice with a genetic change that caused them to have shorter, 20-hour circadian clocks. The mice with healthy biological clocks were more likely to survive and reproduce, while the mice with shorter biological clocks were more likely to die off.‎ What does this all have to do with space travel? Since the Martian sol is longer than a day on Earth, people with shorter circadian clocks could suffer from health problems as they try to adapt to the rotational speed of the red planet.‎ Unfortunately, the body is unlikely to adapt to the new conditions or“learn”to develop a longer clock. As Loudon explained,“Learning is not a likely option.”‎ In other words: Sorry, super-early risers - NASA might not want you for the next Mars mission.‎ ‎28.From the passage, people can face the following troubles living on Mars EXCEPT ______.‎ A. absence of air B. a lot of fierce creatures C. lack of drinking water D. messed-up biological clocks ‎29.According to scientists, how long does one day on Mars last?‎ A. 24 hours. B. 23 hours and 23 minutes.‎ C. 24 hours and 37 minutes. D. 12 hours and 37 minutes.‎ ‎30.How did the researchers study what effect living on Mars has on sleep?‎ A. By comparing different mice. B. By analyzing computer data.‎ C. By experiments in spaceships. D. By observing and judging.‎ ‎31.Life on Mars would seriously mess with your sleep because ________.‎ A. the brain wave activity will be interrupted B. the body’s natural cycles can be shortened C. hormone production will hurt biological functions D. the Martian sol is longer than a day on Earth D Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.‎ However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.‎ This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.‎ When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.‎ Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.‎ ‎32.Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ______.‎ A. the meaning of success B. the reasons for success C. the standards of success D. the importance of success ‎33.Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ______.‎ A. work makes one feel pain B. one tends to enjoy his work C. it takes a lot of time to succeed D. one gives up his work easily ‎34.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?‎ A. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.‎ B. Successful people like to show their great skills.‎ C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life.‎ D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.‎ ‎35.What is the main theme of the passage?‎ A. Having a goal is vital to success.‎ B. Being good is different from being great.‎ C. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.‎ D. One cannot succeed without time and practice.‎ 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How to Recognize a True Friend Sometimes it can be hard to recognize a true friend. Hopefully this article will help you recognize which friends are the keepers.‎ Be able to trust your friends. You should be able to trust true friends and they should return this trust. Do your friends tell you secrets that no one else knows? Ask you for advice?36. However, if your friends hide things from you and act secretly, then this is a sign that they may not trust you.‎ ‎37. Think about it. How comfortable are your friends when they are around you? Are they being themselves around you? Are they acting fake or perhaps hiding something? True friendships can take a while to develop, but if your friends are true they should feel comfortable around you, and vice versa ( You with them)‎ Think about loyalty(忠诚). 38. If you are in need of a helping hand, your true friends should be there to offer it to you. True friends don’t try to get one another into trouble. A true friend will always be loyal to you and will not reveal secrets.‎ Think about nicknames. A lot of true friends love to give each other nicknames! If your friend is giving you nicknames, then this is a great sign. Think of the nickname your friend has given you, does it suit you well? 39.‎ Look at how you fight. Nearly all best friends fight. 40. True friends will find their way through a fight, no matter what the size is. True friends will remain “faithful” to each other even during a fight.
