My initial reaction to her complaint was eye-rolling, along with thinking, “Being a kid is hard? Are you kidding me?” as I mentally ticked off all the hard things that her mama does. However, as I thought about it a bit more, I realized how silly my reaction had been. Yes, as we adults look back on our childhood, being a kid seems carefree and easy and full of fun. Coloring at school! Playing games! Riding bikes! How could that be hard? So I asked my daughter why being a kid was so hard. Her first answer didn’t surprise me. “Well, because you don’t have your own phone, and you can’t eat in the living room.” I asked if anything else was hard about being a kid. “Someone else is the boss of you,” she replied. I thought some more. What else is hard about being a kid? Well, sometimes, we don’t really take kids seriously. There are times when I’ve responded to my children’s tears with “It’s not that bad,” or “You don’t need to be upset about that.” Because I believe that a cancelled playdate or a lost toy is no big deal. But for little ones, it is. We don’t intentionally ignore these opportunities for connection, but sometimes, in busy moments of parenting, we respond unskillfully. We don’t take our children’s view, and we miss an opportunity to practice compassion(同情心). 21. What was the author’s attitude toward “being a kid is hard” in the first place? A. Dissatisfied. B. Disapproving. C. Curious. D. Cautious. 22. The author seems to ________. A. have a happy childhood B. love drawing at school C. feel bored in childhood D. do hard things at school 23. The author’s daughter complained about ______. A. terrible meals B. attending school C. boring toys D. lacking freedom 24. According to the author, parents should ______. Not only are we being told we need to do a lot of more physical activity, but we’re also being urged to get out of our chairs----even if we do the right amount of exercise. The new guidelines focus not just on the exercise but on the amount of time we spend being sedentary(惯于久坐不动的). Sedentary behavior is the term to describe physically inactive tasks that don’t require lots of energy, basically sitting or sleeping. Activities are often measured in METs (Metabolic Equivalent of Task). Sedentary activities are in between 1 and 1.5 METs, walking at a moderate pace ranges from 3 to 3.5 and jogging is about 7. In recent years, a growing body of research has linked sedentary behaviour to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, some cancers. It’s considered such a risk that one US expert has gone so far as to suggest sitting for most of the day may be as dangerous to your health as smoking. Experts state we’re sedentary on average for 7 to 10 hours a day (this doesn’t include our time spent sleeping). Even if you are meeting, or exceeding (超过), the recommended 60 minutes a day of physical activity, you can still be considered sedentary. The guidelines don’t make any specific suggestions about how long you should sit for. Instead they say we should “minimize the amount of time spent in prolonged sitting” and “to break up long periods of sitting as often as possible. ” 28. From the passage we know that ___________. A. sedentary behavior is as dangerous to health as smoking B. sedentary behavior is likely to lead to some cancers C. we are sedentary for 7-10 hours a day in total D. we are healthy if we take one-hour physical activity a day. 29. Which way of behavior does the new guidelines advocate ? A. Stand up or take a short walk between sittings B. Exercise less than 60 minutes a day C. Shorten the time of sleeping D. Stand for a long time a day 30. Where does this passage probably come from? A. Science fiction B. A scientific paper C. An advertisement D. A health report 第二节 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) House-sitting In many countries of the world people do what is called house-sitting. It means that if owners of the house are going away, they want someone to come into their house and look after the house and maybe pets while they are away. In Australia, many people travel. After people retire, they might buy a van and travel all over the country. 31 . So if someone wants to travel or go away for some reason, they might want someone in their house to care for it and keep the gardens tidy. House-sitters might have to care for pets. Also, quite a few people have swimming pools in their back yards and they need cleaning. 32 I feel it is a great way of seeing the country, because you go and stay in a new city, get to meet new people, and have time to go sightseeing in a new area. 33 There are websites where you find the advertisements by people who want to travel, and by replying to the advertisements, you can make arrangements to go and look after their houses. There are some requirements to be a house-sitter. You must be a trusted person, so that the house owner knows you will not steal anything. You must be able to go when the house owner wants you to go, so you need lots of free time. 34 You need to be good with pets, able to care for cats and dogs, or other pets they may have. Some house-sitting jobs are just for a few days or a couple of weeks while the house owners have a short holiday. Sometimes it is for much longer. We have had a house-sitting job for six months, while the house owner travelled to Europe. 35 Then you can travel to many different countries and stay there. One of the important things to get is references from the house owners for whom you have done house-sitting. A reference is a written letter to say that you are trustworthy and have looked after their house well. You can show these letters to future house owners and they know you will do a good job. A. I have done house-sitting many times. B. Thousands of people do this all the time. C. It is also possible to do house-sitting in other countries. D. Generally you have many opportunities to get a house-sitting job. E. You must take a little care over what your description says about you. F. This is an international house-sitting service for all city and country areas. G. You must have a good car, so you can travel to different parts of the country. 第三部分:完形填空。阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选 出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) Luke didn’t know what to do. It is wise for you to refuse her offer by explaining reasons to her. Firstly, your friend may be unaware of the harmful effects of smoking. It not only pollutes the air, but also does terrible damage to smokers’ lungs, which means the growing risk of developing cancer. Those who become physically and mentally addicted to nicotine tend to become breathless easily. That is why you will not begin smoking to suit her. Secondly, tell your friend it makes no sense to strengthen your friendship by accepting her offer. Friendship has nothing to do with each other’s choice. You remain good friends despite your disagreements on smoking. Don’t be upset. I do hope my advice will work out well with you. Good luck and best wishes! The editor查看更多
