What did Horwitz actually do?‎ A. He failed the whole class. B. He turned to the police for help. ‎ C. He stopped giving lessons to the class. D. He made the whole class apologize to him. ‎ ‎22. According to the vice president a student may fail when he_______. ‎ A. can’t meet the demands of a course B. signs in for others C. doesn’t respect the teacher in class D. fights with classmates ‎23. What can we learn from the text?‎ A. The students will be dismissed finally. B. Horwitz will quit his job in the university. ‎ C. The students had no interest in learning. D. Horwitz didn’t get on well with the students. ‎ B ‎ The world’s largest travel website, TripAdvisor, released a survey on female travel on April 9. It revealed that 43 percent of Chinese women have holidayed alone, slightly higher than the global average of 41 percent. ‎ ‎ The survey covered 10 countries and regions, including China, the US, the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, and aimed to explore women’s travel habits especially with regards to solo (单独的) travelling. According to the survey, when choosing hotels, 85 percent of Chinese women will compare prices on different travel websites, much higher than the world average of 57 percent. However, 92 percent of women around the world regard online hotel reviews as an important reference while 71 percent of Chinese female travelers do so, which demonstrates that global women travelers attach greater importance to hotel reviews to avoid unsatisfactory accommodation experiences. In contrast, though Chinese women do also check the ratings, they still prefer to be guided by lower prices. ‎ ‎ Interestingly, 84 percent of Chinese women identified trying local food as one of the necessary activities when traveling alone, higher than the global average of 62 percent. Plus, 76 percent of Chinese women and 73 percent of global females will take part in cultural and scenic activities. Surprisingly, only 30 percent of Chinese women list shopping as an indispensable (必不可少的) must-do on their solo travel trips, lower than the average of 43 percent. ‎ ‎ TripAdvisor China President Zheng Jiali said, “Globally speaking, solo travel has gradually become a trend among the young generation. And there is no denying that women must face the greater challenges of unknown environments by themselves on their solo trips in the future. ”‎ For most Chinese women traveling alone, they not only focus on the journey process but also long for changes that travel can bring about in their minds. Among more than 9, 000 respondents around the world, a majority spoke highly of independent trips which have caused significant changes in themselves, with 36 percent saying they have learned about different cultures, 43 percent expressing that they are more confident than before and 56 percent feeling they become more independent. In addition, 45 percent of Chinese female travelers think independent trips have helped reshape their outlook on life, well above the international average of merely 15 percent. ‎ ‎24. Top cooks and professional meat cutters say it is the best beef in the world. It is definitely the most costly. The beef comes from Wagyu cattle in Japan’s Kobe region. The beef’s fat content makes it rich and melt-in-your-mouth tender. ‎ Caroline McCann is the owner of the meat store. She is a “huge fan” of Kobe beef. The Japanese taught her how to cook it: drop thin pieces into boiling soup for a very brief time. “And with chopsticks just three to five times put the meat through the soup, and enjoy. It is just delightful. It's incredibly creamy: almost like eating a piece of butter, so it’s very rich: you certainly can’t eat a lot of it. ’’‎ Caroline McCann has visited Japan. She says the meat currently costs more than $ 1, 000 dollars a kilo on international markets. She says Kobe farmers understand that the better they feed and treat their animals, the better their beef will taste. “It’s kind of the top diet. So they (the cows) have this wonderful massage(按摩) once a day and then they get fed beer every day. Most people I know would put their hands in the air and beg to be a Wagyu.” (Laughing) “And so what they get is that they get roughly a liter, liter and a half, of beer each day.”‎ An order is ready in the kitchen of a restaurant in Sandton, a wealthy area of Johannesburg. Businessman Dennis Atwood is eating Kobe-style steak. Caroline McCann says Kobe-style beef is something that wealthy people from all over the world want. She says there also are a lot of people from elsewhere in Africa, who visit Johannesburg for business, and they too want to eat Kobe beef. So a lot of people from Ghana and Kenya and Congo, who come with significant money, come with a deep understanding of food internationally, and they’re also actively seeking out this kind of product. ‎ ‎28. As Dorothy Parker once joked, American children aren’t raised; they are motivated. Children are constantly told how special they are. The second is that children are honed (磨砺) to an unimaginable degree. Parents spend much more time than in past generations on their children’s development. ‎ These two great trends—greater praise and greater honing—combine in close ways. Parents shower(大量地给) their kids with affection, but it is intermingled with the desire to help their children achieve success. Parents are happy when their child studies hard, practices hard, wins first place, and gets into a famous college. ‎ The wolf of conditional love is hidden in these homes. The parents feel they love their children in all circumstances. But the children often think differently. They feel that childhood is a performance—on the athletic field, in school and beyond. The shadowy presence of conditional love produces a fear, the fear that there is no completely safe love. ‎ Meanwhile, children who are uncertain of their parents’ love develop a great hunger for it. This conditional love is like an acid that affects children’s criteria to make their own decisions about their own colleges, majors and careers. At key decision-points, they unconsciously imagine how their parents will react. ‎ These children tell their parents those things that will bring praise and hide the parts of their lives that won’t. Studies suggest that children who receive conditional love often do better in the short run. They can be model students. But they suffer in the long run. They come to hate their parents. They are so influenced by fear that they become afraid of risk. ‎ Parents today are less likely to demand obedience (顺从) with explicit(清楚明白的) rules and lectures. But they are more likely to use love as a tool to exercise control. But parental love is supposed to ignore achievement. It’s meant to be an unconditional support—a gift that cannot be bought and cannot be earned. ‎ ‎32.
