Now Gates — who has been labeled a “greedy” reader — has released a list of his favorite books of the year. All of the books are standout reads according to the billionaire most of which are focused on business and economy. Here are Bill’s top four picks for the year (with parts of his full review of each book). Business Adventures by John Brooks Brooks’ collection was published in 1969 and remains one of Gates’ favorites. He re-read it again this year labeling it the “best business book I’ve ever read.” “Shortly after we met Warren Buffett lent me this collection of New Yorker business articles from the 1950s and 1960s. I loved them as much as he did. Brooks’ insights(洞察力) about business have aged beautifully and they are as true today as ever.” Capital in the Twenty-First Century by Thomas Piketty Piketty’s novel hit the shelves in August 2013 and sparked much discussion concerning income inequality throughout this year. Gates also got to sit down with Piketty himself after reading the non-fiction work to discuss the topic. “As I told him although I have concerns about some of his secondary points and policy prescriptions I agree with his most important conclusions: inequality is a growing problem and that governments should play a role in reducing it.” How Asia Works by Joe Studwell Studwell’s work which was published in May this year addresses how countries such as Japan South Korea and China have continued to achieve high growth and why other countries have failed to do the same. “The agriculture section of the book was particularly insightful. It provided ample food for thought for me as well as the whole Agriculture team at our foundation. And it left us thinking about whether parts of the Asian model can apply in Africa.” Making the Modern World: Materials and Dematerialization by Vaclav Smil Smil’s books are a constant favorite of the Microsoft founder — one of his books makes Gates’ list almost every year. “Making the Modern World” came out late last year and explores the global use of materials from silicon to wood and plastic. “If anyone tries to tell you we’re using fewer materials send him this book. With his usual skepticism and his love of data Smil shows how our ability to make things with less material — say soda cans that need less aluminum — makes them cheaper which actually encourages more production.” 21. The books mentioned in the text are all about ___________. A. charity in the world B. business and economy C. poverty in the world D. Bill Gates’ life experience 22. The 50-year-old has been homeless for more than 10 years. "It is hard. It's hard to live homeless. You filled every day trying to find out where you are going to get something to eat. If I hadn't found wonderful Fairfax County Kennedy Shelter, I wouldn't know where I would be by now. I might be dead," Talley said. The Kennedy Shelter is one of the facilities New Hope Housing provides for homeless people. Pam Michell has devoted her life to making the lives of this vulnerable (易受伤的)population better as executive director of the non-profit organization. "I went to Africa in 1985. And I saw a huge amount of poverty, but I saw so much hope. And I decided that I should try to do something that would bring hope to people," Michell said. When Michell began working with New Hope Housing 25 years ago, its three shelters had about 80 beds. Now, it has 350 beds and serves about 1,500 homeless people every year. She has expanded the program beyond just providing beds for the night. "We do outreach(拓展), we do prevention, we do permanent housing. we do transitional housing. We have an education program with all sorts of different things to move people to end their homelessness," she said,"Our Out of Poverty program is not just about money. It's about you could be spiritually poor, you could be relationship poor ... you could be educationally poor. So it is focusing on how you get out of this poverty that has brought you to being homeless." The program tries to teach the shelter residents self-reliance (自立) and work values, and includes courses on planning and personal responsibility. "l learned I still have opportunities to change it and I can change it," said shelter resident Lewis Webster. "It is just about going forth in doing necessary work to do it. I mean if you really want better, you would do better and that's the frame of mind of me now." 25. Gregory Talley's story is told at the beginning of the text to . A. tell readers the situation for the poor in the US is getting worse B. introduce a non-profit organization that is trying to help the poor in the US C. disclose the truth that more and more homeless people are dying from hunger D. remind readers that the homeless people in the US have no trouble getting food 26. To tell the homeless people the ways to make money. B. To help the homeless people find the causes of their poverty. C. To encourage the homeless to work and rely on themselves. D. To teach the poor how to live a better life in the shelters. 28. What may be the best title for the text? A. Comfort in the Kennedy Shelter B. Ways to achieve success C. An Opportunity to Fight Homelessness D. An Organisation to End Homelessness C A new study suggests that washing dishes by hand is healthier than using a dishwasher. Nobody likes doing the dishes, but it turns out that doing this task might pay off in an unexpected way. According to a new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics, washing dishes by hand instead of using a dishwasher might prevent the development of allergies(过敏). Researchers in Sweden surveyed the parents of 1,029 children aged 7 and 8. They discovered that children whose families hand-washed the dishes instead of using a machine were less likely to have allergies. Earlier research has shown that dishes washed by machine are cleaner than those washed by hand. So why would kids who eat off of slightly dirtier plates be better off when it comes to preventing allergies? One explanation is based on a theory known as the “hygiene hypothesis,” which says the reason kids develop allergies is that their surroundings are actually too clean. Your immune system keeps you healthy by fighting germs(细菌)like bacteria and viruses. But when you have allergies, it overreacts and tries to fight ordinary things like pollen(花粉)or certain foods. Being exposed to germs, especially early in life is good training for the immune system, says the lead author of the study, Dr. Bill Hesselmar of Queen Silvia Hospital in Sweden. “You stimulate the immune system in various ways and it becomes tolerant.” This study shows that while using the dishwasher might be easier, the old-fashioned method of cleaning up could be better for your health. 29. What is the benefit of washing dishes by hand? A. It can improve our immune system. B. It is easier than washing by machine. C. It costs less time than washing by machine. D. It might reduce the chance of developing allergies. 30. What can we learn from paragraph 4? A. Our health depends much on our immune system. B. Children in clean environment must have allergies. C. Our immune system can only fight bacteria and viruses. D. Hand-washed dishes are as clean as those washed by machine. 31. What do we know about germs from the passage? A. Without germs, people won’t get sick. B. There are no germs in clean environment. C. Exposure to germs can improve our immune system. D. Germs like bacteria and viruses do harm to our health. D From the health point of view we are living in a marvelous age. A large number of oncefatal illnesses can now be cured by modern drugs and surgery. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible killing of people on the roads. Man is opposite to the motor-car! It is a never ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people are killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen. It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel (方向盘), his car becomes the extension of his personality . There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They are ill-mannered and aggressive. All their hidden frustrations and disappointments seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving. The surprising thing is that society smiles on the motorist and seems to forgive the behavior. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities and towns are made ugly by huge car parks. It is high time a world system of laws were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are not strict and even the strictest are not strict enough. A laws of some countries are not strict and even the strictest are not strict enough. A law which was universally accepted could only have a beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some things that might be done. The driving test should be made to a fixed standard and far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through strict annual tests for safety. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be made much stricter. Driving speed should be limited on all roads. These measures may sound extremely severe. But surely nothing should be considered difficult if it results in reducing the annual toll (丧钟声)of human life. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars. 32. The main idea of this passage is _________. A. traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists. B. thousands of people the world over are killed each year. C. only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents. D. the laws of some countries about driving are not too strict. 33. Which of the followings is right according to the passage? A. It is right to build huge car parks in cities and towns. B. all the drivers must be asked to take a test every year. C. Working by car can save time and money. D. Society overlooks their rude driving. 34. Why does the author say: “his car becomes the extension of his personality?” A. Driving can show his real self. B. Driving can bring out his good character. C. Driving can make a man excited and joyful. D. Driving can make a man quiet and pleasant. 35. The attitude of the author is _________. A. approving B. critical C. sympathetic D. aggressive 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Distance runners often worry about "hitting the wall" during training or races, when negative thoughts become so overpowering that they make it difficult to continue. 36 At the time, the body’s glycogen(糖原)supplies become exhausted. As a result, many runners feel exhausted and discouraged, slow their pace, have trouble focusing and want to quit or walk. 37 Here are a few sports psychologist-approved techniques to try, which could have major benefits for an athlete’s performance and some well-being. 1. Make a motivational song list. Distracting(分心) yourself with some great tunes can help you make it to the finish line faster. 38 2. Try the partner system. A running partner can keep you motivated and on-track, and might even improve your performance, research shows. 3. 39 A study on weight-lifters found that mental practices can be as effective as physical practice, resulting in actual muscle increases. Visualizing your if-then plan, for instance, could improve your chance of success. 4. Try “attention narrowing”. 40 Last year, an NYU study found that focusing on an object on the horizon makes the distance feel shorter, and leads runners to go faster and perform better than those who let their minds wander. With these helpful strategies, your next personal record might be just around the corner. A. Plan what to do. B. Visualize achieving your goal. C. Finding ways to move past those kinds of experiences is very vital. D. “Hitting the wall” typically happens around 20 miles into a marathon. E. There is evidence that saying motivational things to oneself benefits a lot. F. Runners who focus their eyes on an object in the distance get there faster. G.
