The most embarrassing was when my Mom apologized to the people we were staying with because her “pants were dirty”. They looked at her in amazement, not knowing how to react. You see, Mom had fallen over and gotten mud on her jeans. But in Britain, “pants” means underpants or knickers, not trousers as it does back home. Katie ---- From America I went to stay with a friend on the west coast last summer. Her flat was on the first floor of a high-rise building so I got the lift up. Then I wandered round for ages looking for her flat but couldn’t find it. Fed up and tired, I finally had to go out to find a phone box. She explained that her flat was on the first floor, which for me meant the ground floor. David ---- From Britain When I asked for the “restroom” in a big department store, people kept directing me to a room with seats where I could sit and “rest”. It took me years to get through to someone that I only wanted the toilet! Tom ---- From America Last summer we went on a two-week family touring holiday, so Dad hired a car over the Internet. This was an old vehicle and there turned out to be lots of things wrong with it. When he phoned the hire company and tried to explain that the lock on the boot was broken, they thought he was talking about footwear! He had no idea their word for “boot” was “trunk”. In the end we went to a garage and just solved the problem. Mary ---- From Britain 21. Hearing Katie’s mother’s words, Katie’s friends were in surprise because . A. Katie’s mother got mud on her jeans B. they mistook “pants” in American for underpants C. they didn’t know English D. Katie’s mother’s underpants were dirty 21. David went out to find a phone box to . A. phone the police for help B. apologize for his being late C. tell his friend he couldn’t go to visit her D. phone his friend for help 22. When Tom asked for the “restroom”, the people around him thought . A. he wanted to have a rest B. he wanted the toilet C. he wanted a chair D. he wanted to go to a department store 23. The underlined word “garage” is probably . A. a parking place B. a car C. a gas station D. a place to repair cars B I come from a close, loving family. I have three elder brothers. My parents owned a wood supply business. But they were active volunteers in our community. When I was a kid, people used to laugh at my dad and say his volunteer work was his business and his business was his hobby. That rubbed off on me. For example, I was a Big Brother in high school, and I continued doing volunteer work in college. In 1979, just before graduation, my brother Mark asked if I’d like to help him start a software company. So I joined his company and I was happy that later it became very unusual in the software industry. Once I started working. I continued to volunteer. I’m a big believer that you learn from those around you by volunteering. So I volunteer to company the elderly persons who live alone. I met Malcolm, who’s physically healthy. We talk about what friends talk about. He is also interested in my work. He often says “You can get caught up being the CEO of a half-billion-dollar software company very quickly.” I learn kindness, humility (谦恭), a positive outlook on life from Malcolm. Most people volunteer for a year. But we have been together for five years and there is no end in sight. 24. From the third paragraph we can know that _____. A. the writer and his brother started a software company to volunteer B. the writer was happy with the company’s volunteer work C. the writer didn’t stop doing volunteer work after he started working A. the writer’s brother’s company was very usual in the software industry 22. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. The writer’s father did nothing but volunteer. B. The writer has learned a lot from Malcolm. C. There are five people in writer’s family. D. The writer could stay with Malcolm for only five years. 23. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Volunteering to learn B. My volunteer story C. Malcolm and I D. How to volunteer. C McDonald’s logo design is familiar worldwide and represents more than fast food. As one of the top brands on the planet, it’s become a cultural symbol with capitalism, globalisation and the wide spread of American culture. Here we’ll take back at some of the early versions of the logo to show how the McDonald's branding got to where it is today. Brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened the first McDonald’s in 1940 in San Bernardino, California, serving barbecue alongside its burgers --- fries weren’t even on the menu. By 1948 the pair had perfected the art of fast food with a process they named the ‘Speedee Service System’. Barbecue was dropped from the menu to improve service time, and the brothers designed this winking chef character, Speedee, to help communicate the message. In 1952 the McDonald brothers asked architect Stanley Meston to design their first franchised outlet(授权加盟 店). According to architect Alan Hess, the original idea for the golden arches came from a special sketch(素描) of two half-circle arches, drawn by Richard. The brothers brought in a sign-maker, George Dexter, to design two giant yellow arches that were added to both sides of the building. Viewed from a certain angle, the arches formed the letter ‘M’. However, it wasn’t until Ray Kroc bought the business in 1961 that the special architecture was adopted in a new logo of the company. Fred Turner, then president of McDonald’s Corporation, sketched out a first attempt before head of constructions and engineering Jim Schindler hit upon an ‘M’ with a line running through the linked arches to represent the roof of the store, higher at the front and lower at the back. An icon was born. The most successful advertising campaign in McDonald’s history was created in 2003 by Heye & Partner GmbH. “I’m Lovin’ It” launched in Munich on 2 September 2003 , with the English-language version introduced to the UK, Australia and USA soon after. Today the official logo exists in a few shapes and sizes, but all feature the yellow arches accompanied by the official motto. 28. Why was barbecue removed from the menu of Mcdonald’s in the 1940s according to the passage? A. Because it didn’t agree with Americans. B. Because it took more time to cook it. C. Because it didn’t sell well. D. Because the chef Speedee didn’t like it. 29. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. Golden arches were a part of the first franchised outlet of Mcdonald’s B. Fred Turner was in charge of Mcdonald’s Corporation in 1961. C. The logo of Mcdonald’s today is of the same shape and size worldwide. D. The first franchised outlet of Mcdonald’s appeared in the early 1950s. 30. Who created the logo of Mcdonald’s which is familiar to the world? A. The Mcdonald brothers B. Ray Kroc C. George Dexter D. Jim Schundler 31. What can we infer from this passage? A. Mcdonald’s Corporation is always in the possession of the Mcdonald brothers. B. The Mcdonald’s most successful ad “I’m Lovin’ It” was not first launched in English. C. The idea for the golden arches came from a special sketch of two half-circle arches. D. The aim of the ‘Speedee Service System’ is to improve the taste of fast food. D Today, people are more conscious about their health and want to get a well-toned body shape. This is because when we are in good shape, it makes us feel fit and healthy. We feel good about ourselves and feel much more confident than before. When you want to tone up your body, just workouts will not do. You have to take care of your overall health by eating proper food, doing the right kind of exercises and keeping yourself happy. The first thing that needs to be done is to reduce the intake of calories. The calorie content of each meal should not be higher than 400 calories. Many people make the mistake of avoiding strength training when they are trying for weight loss. They think that strength training will increase their body weight. However, this is not true. Be careful not to over exercise in order to lose weight fast. Too much of exercise can cause damage to you. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water can help in reducing fat. If you drink ice cold water, then it will burn out some extra calories from your body. This is because when you are drinking cold water, your body needs to raise the temperature of the water up to your body temperature. In this process, almost one calorie of fat gets burned from the body. Drinking a glass of water before a meal will be helpful in this regard. You can get a healthy body only if your mind is free from stress.
