B Just what is a tiger mother?Amy Chua is a law professor at America's Yale University and her recent book on the subject is making waves. She's been called “dangerous”,“outrageous”,even a “monster” for her descriptions of how she brought up her two daughters. Her book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother describes fighting with a daughter for hours at the piano to ensure the child gets a piece of music right. She rejected birthday cards made for her by her girls because she didn't think they had made enough efforts. She compared one child negatively with the other, threatening to burn their toys. Her rules include:schoolwork always comes first; an A-minus is a bad grade; children must be two years ahead of their classmates in math, and playing the violin or the piano is a must. Ms. Chua considers the Chinese hard work ethic as a way of creating happy, successful children—at least in her case. Although she's had a large amount of flak for her theories, one thing can't be ignored—the success of Chinese children in the education system. In Britain, shocking research shows that Chinese girls, for example, are outperforming all other foreign groups at GCSE—79 percent getting 5 AC Grades, compared with 58 percent of white British girls. So what is it about Chinese parenting that's leading to high achievers? And how do Amy Chua's theories play into that success? She told me that if her daughter came back from school with 96/100 in a test,Chua would ask her what happened to the other 4 points. It's about always knowing “you can do better”,she told me. Interestingly,in China, the birthplace of the tiger mother, people are moving away from traditional Chinese parenting. They are following more western parenting styles. 25.After reading Amy Chua's recent book, the public ______. A.feel very sorry for their own children B.consider her a very successful mother C.realize their methods of bringing up children are wrong D.don't think highly of her methods of bringing up her children 26.What can we learn about Amy Chua according to Paragraph 2? A.She is very strict with her children. B.She doesn't think her children are clever. C.She is very interested in playing the piano. D.She knows playing is important to children. 27.Paragraph 4 shows that ______. A.Chinese parents don't think grades are very important B.Chinese children are cleverer than British children C.Chinese parents are proud of their children D.Chinese children do well in their study 28.The underlined word “flak” in the third paragraph probably means “______”. A.attention B.criticism C.curiosity D.contribution C SCS Global Services(SCS)has evaluated a new methodology for measuring the carbon sequestration(封存) ability of soil under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), a leading greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting system. The methodology, developed by The Earth Partners, will allow land managers who sequester GHGs in grasslands and farmlands to produce carbon credits for sale in the voluntary market. Managers of grasslands and farmlands can increase carbon sequestration in soil by practices such as changing grazing(放牧)practices and operating treatments designed to improve the variety and productivity of plant groups. The Earth Partners is presently piloting this methodology with farmers across seven million acres of the Palouse River and Columbia Plateau regions in the Pacific Northwest. “The VCS program has achieved an important milestone in now combining grassland and rangeland carbon offset projects," said Dr. Robert J. Hrubes, Executive Vice President of SCS. "SCS looks forward to approving and verifying agricultural carbon offset projects that use this very powerful new methodology." The VM0021 Soil Carbon Quantification Methodology is based on decades of soil carbon research and testing conducted by top soil scientists. The methodology was developed by The Earth Partners and verified by Environmental Services, Inc. as well as SCS Global Services. It is the first soil carbon methodology to be approved for use under the VCS. "This widely tested methodology is the first to specially deal with soils in a market," said Steven I. Apfelbaum, Chairman of Applied Ecological Services, Inc. and Director of Science with The Earth Partners. According to Apfelbaum, soils represent the second largest living sink of carbon on the planet. 29. The new methodology is assessed according to ________. A. The Earth Partners B. the Verified Carbon Standard C. Environmental Services, Inc. D. Applied Ecological Services, Inc. 30. Carbon sequestration in soil can be strengthened by _______. A. selling carbon credits in the voluntary market B. changing grazing practices and operating treatments C. reducing the variety and productivity of plant groups D. decreasing farmlands in the Pacific Northwest 31. Which of the following is true according to the passage?________ A. The VCS program proves to be successful in carbon offset projects. B. Many soil Carbon Methodologies have already been approved for use. C. The new methodology has been tested in many fields including soil. D. Soils seem to be the largest living sink of carbon on the planet. D Does Fame Drive You Crazy? Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today's stars, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world's attention. Paparazzi (狗仔队) camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids(小报) publish thrilling stories about their personal lives. Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature! According to psychologist Christina Villarreal, celebrities—famous people—worry constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names. “Over time,” Villarreal says, “they feel separated and alone.” The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. In the 4th century BC, painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his sold-out readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about film-stars in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do. Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying about photographers with modern cameras. When they say something silly or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the news in minutes and keep their “story” alive forever. If fame is so troublesome, why aren't all celebrities running away from it? The answer is there are still ways to deal with it. Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made them famous in the first place. Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice. Still, even stars who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard their lives are. They are tired of being famous already. 32.It can be learned from the passage that stars today ________. A. are often misunderstood by the public B. can no longer have their privacy protected C. spend too much on their public appearance D. care little about how they have come into fame 33.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3? ________ A. Great heroes of the past were generally admired. B. The problem faced by celebrities has a long history. C. Well-known actors are usually targets of tabloids. D. Works of popular writers often have a lot of readers. 34.What makes it much harder to be a celebrity today? ________ A. Availability of modern media. B. Inadequate social recognition. C. Lack of favorable chances. D. Huge population of fans. 35.What is the author's attitude toward modern celebrity? ________ A. Disappointed. B. Sceptical. C. Disapproving. D. Sympathetic. 第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Pubs have been the cornerstone of British society for hundreds of years: Over the years, British Pubs have developed many traditions. Had you visited a pub in the 1990s, yon might have noticed the ringing of the bell around 11 p.m., signaling that the pub was about to close. 36 ____ During World War I ,the British Government decided that pubs must close at nine thirty in the evening (later to change to 11 p.m.). 37 Ringing a bell was a clear signal to let everyone know that the time was about to close. 38 Before that depending on what kind of entertainment a place offered, there was a different license, for example a cinema needed a different license form a theater. A pub needed a different license from a night cafe. The different licenses that existed at the time were combined into one. Additionally , every three years the person responsible for the pub had to renew their license which was valid for only one location. This period of validity was extended to ten years and also the license was able to transfer from one location to another. 39 It also became much easier and cheaper for owners to put on entertainment such as music bands.
