What the researchers are testing is an easier way to make type O blood out of other kinds of blood. There are four main kinds of blood. Most people born with one of these four: Type A, Type B, Type AB or Type O. Type O can be safely given to anyone. So it is commonly used when a person is injured or sick and has to have blood. Type O is the most common blood group. But the supplies of it available in hospitals and blood banks are usually limited. This is because of the high demand for it. Type O blood is used in emergencies when there is no time to identify the patient’s blood type. Giving A,B or AB to someone with a different blood type, including O, can cause a bad reaction by the person’s defense system. Their immune system can reject the blood. This immune reaction can be deadly. The differences among blood types are linked to whether or not red blood cells contain certain kinds of sugar molecules. These molecules are found on the surface of the cells. They are known as antigens(抗原). These antigens are found with type A, B and AB blood but not with type O. More than twenty-five years ago, scientists found that the antigens could be removed to create what they called universal-type cells. They could be removed with chemicals called enzymes(酶). But large amounts of enzymes were required to make the change. Doctor Henrik Clausen of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark led the study. The next step, he says, is to complete safety tests. The team is working with the American company ZymeQuest to test the new method. If it meets safety requirements(要求) and is not too costly, it could become a widely used life-saving tool to increase the supply of universal blood. 4.How do scientists deal with the problem of lacking type O blood? A.Make type O blood out of other kinds of blood. B.Make the most of the present type O blood. C.Develop new ways of using type O blood. D.Appeal to more people to donate type O blood. 5.What make people have different kinds of blood? A.Sugar molecules in red blood cells. B.People's different living conditions. C.The variety of people's cells and genes. D.People's various immune systems. 6.What can we infer from the text? A.Antigens could easily be removed to create universal blood. B.A Danish company wanted to involve itself in studying blood. C.Type O blood can be safely given to anyone. D.The new method is not safe enough to be put into use in hospitals now. 7.What is the best title for the text? A.Four different kinds of blood. B.A new way to make type O blood. C.The latest research on blood type. D.Find the proper type of blood. C Jazz is an American contribution to popular music. While classical music follows formal European tradition, jazz is rather a free form. It is full of energy, expressing, the moods, interests, and emotions of the people. It is breaking and exciting with a modern sound. In the 1920s jazz sounded like America. And so it does today. The origins of the music are as interesting as the music itself. Jazz was invented by American Negroes, or blacks, as they are called today, who were brought to the southern states as slaves. They were sold to farm owners and forced to work long hours in the fields. This work was hard and life was short. When a Negro died his friends and relatives would gather and carry the body to have a ceremony(典礼) before they buried him. There was always a band with them. On the way to the ceremony the band played slowly, solemn(庄重的) music suitable for the situation. But on the way home the mood changed. Spirits lifted. Everyone was happy. Death had removed one of their members, but the living were glad to be alive. The band played happy music. This music made everyone want to dance. It was an early form of jazz. Music has always been important in Negro life. The black, who were brought to America from West Africa, had a rich musical tradition. In the fields, they made up work songs. Singing made the hard work go faster. And when they got to Christianity, they made lovely spirituals(圣歌), which have become an everlasting part of American music. 8. From the passage, we can see that jazz ____________. A. is a kind of African music B. started from Africa but is popular in America C. was started by blacks working in Africa D. was started by blacks in America 9. Jazz is a kind of music ____________. A. almost the same as classical music B. quite different from classical music C. popular only in America D. quite different from African music 10. When we listen to jazz music, we may usually feel ____________. A. sorry B. tiring C. exciting D. lonely 11. Jazz will always be connected with ____________. A. American blacks B. slavery in the United States C. modern times D. quick development of music D You're enjoying a quiet evening at home when suddenly your neighbor's dog starts barking(吠叫) and doesn't stop. Sure, dogs need to bark every now and then, but if the barking is getting in the way of your daily life, you need to do something. Before you take action, make records of when the dog is disturbing, "says expert Sharon Schweitzer. Record the dates and times when the barking appears to find out the features of the barking. "Check them carefully and get your facts straight, "says Schweitzer. You might notice the barking only happens when the owners are at work, or during thunderstorms. After two to three weeks, visit your neighbors with the facts. "Since you're trying to keep a good relationship, you can’t go when you’re angry and frustrated, "says Schweitzer. Plus, your neighbors might not even realize the barking is a problem, for the worst noise may happen when they're gone. Explain the times when the barking gets bad, then suggest a way to solve the problem. "You can sit and complain all day, but that will go nowhere, "says Schweitzer. Ask if the dog can stay inside during storm, or suggest a dog training class. Be open to compromise(妥协) because the owners might have other ideas about how to deal with the noise. Befriending the dog could help. Have your neighbors introduce you to their dog. "If they become more comfortable in your presence, they’re less likely to bark when they see you or when they’re in the backyard, "says Schweitzer. You might even be able to use commands such as 'quiet' once the dog trusts you. Avoid gossiping with other neighbors about the dog. "That's when things escalate." After all, most people will want to solve the problem. 12.What can you do first when your neighbor's dogs barking influences your life? A.Bring the dog to a training class. B.Show your complain to your neighborhood. C.Drive it out of your neighborhood. D.Record the dates and times of the barking. 13.Why are your neighbors less likely to realize the barking problem? A.They may like dogs barking. B.They all think their dogs are friendly. C.They have been used to the barking of the dogs. D.They may be out when the worst barking happens. 14.What does the underlined word "escalate" in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Become better. B.Become worse. C.Remain unchanged. D.Become more personal. 15.What can be inferred from the text? A.Love me, love my dog. B.Barking dogs seldom bite. C.Good communication is a must.
