第I卷(选择题 共70分) 第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water, just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didn’t think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull. I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words. It takes confidence to make a new start---there’s a dark period in-between where you’re neither one thing nor the other. You’re out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you’re too ashamed to say, “Well, I’m writing a novel, but I’m not quite sure if I’m going to get there.” My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside. Then I met an agent(代理商) who said I should send my novel out to agents. So I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel. The next problem was finding a publisher. After two and a half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal----that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for. It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck--- of fate, really. When you set out to do something different , there’s no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract(合同) of the publisher --- to be a published writer --- is unbelievably rewarding. 1.What does the underlined part in paragraph 1 mean? C J.K.Rowling, author of the hugely popular Harry Potter series, has written her own special magic in the fantasy genre(体裁). Though she may be the best-known fantasy writer to the current generation, she is hardly the first. A number of others, many of whom, like Rowling, are British, were writing fantasy novel before J. K. Rowling was born. One such writer is George MacDonald, a Scottish author, best known for his novels Phantastes and Lilith. MacDonald’s work, like Rowling’s, showed that fantasy literature could hold appeal for older children and even adults. In Phantastes, a young man named Anodos journeys through a fantasy land where he experiences magical adventures. While Phantastes is relatively light story, Lilith, a much later work by MacDonald, is a darker and more serious tale. In this novel, a character called Mr.Vane travels through a fantasy land. There he meets Lilith, an attractive but troubling fairy princess. In describing Mr. Vane’s experiences, MacDonald explores the question of what it means to be human. Another British fantasy writer, C. S. Lewis, acknowledged that he was grateful to George MacDonald. It was George MacDonald’s mythmaking, rather than his writing style, that Lewis admired. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, a tale of mythical power, is a group of seven books tied together more by the fictional world they created than by the description of a particular character’s experiences. Narnia is a magical place where animals can talk and time progresses at its own rate. Like Harry Potter and his mates at Hogwarts, the characters who live in Narnia struggle with the conflicting forces of good and evil. Yet another fantasy series, occupying fewer printed pages but treating its material in the way the Harry Potter series does, is J. R. Tolkien’s The lord of the Rings. The series describes a group of seven characters who journey together in order to destroy a ring which would give an evil lord power if he gets it. As Lewis does with Narnia, Tolkien invents a universe, which he calls Middle Earth, and peoples, from humans to terrifying creatures called “ores” and “uruk-hai”. 8.What do the four writers in the text have in common? A. They are all Scottish writers. B. They are all fantasy novelists. C. They are all best-selling writers. D. They have the same writing style. 9.We can infer from the text that ________ A. Phantastes is a serious story. B. Lilith is one of MacDonald’s early works. C. The Chronicles of Narnia is a fantasy series. D. The Lord of Rings is the earliest fantasy work. 10.It can be learned from the text that _______ A. J. K. Rowling was born much later than the others. B. MacDonald’s works are only popular among children. C. Narnia is the name of a character in Lewis’s novel D. Lewis disliked MacDonald’s mythmaking. 11.The main purpose of the text is to ______ A. introduce several British writers. B. discuss Rowling’s Harry Potter series. C. show fantasy stories’ influence on Rowling. D. explain the development of fantasy literature. D It is a really happy thing to look back on the days I spent with Jennie. We met in night school. After Jennie and I had completed the required courses, we started teaching in the same school. For a time we were just casual friends, but one day, when I was telling Jennie about my problem son, we discovered we were kindred(同类的) spirits. “He’s a difficult little character,” I explained. Jennie looked thoughtful. “May be you’re only seeing him with your eyes.” She was silent for a moment and then added softly, “It is only whit the heart that one can see rightly.” I stared at her. “You are quoting (引用) that! It’s from The Little Prince, Antonie de Saint—Exupery’s book for children, one of my favorites. You know it, too? ” Jennie nodded. “I love it. I have read it so often. I have practically memorized it.” Now, when I think of Jennie, I recall that book because Jennie – more than anyone I know ---- possessed the gift of seeing with the heart. From that moment of a treasured book shared, our friendship grew steadily. It wasn’t that I didn’t have an excellent relationship with my husband and son, but my mother had died shortly after my marriage, and I had neither sisters nor daughters. I realize, now, how I needed someone to share those little , seemingly unimportant things that add so much to life--- things that must be shared to be fully appreciated. And it was Jennie who helped me with my fourth—grade problem child. One day I was at my wit’s end. “ What he needs is a good beating!” I shouted. “He’s probably had plenty of those,” Jennie said. “ Maybe he just needs sincere praise for anything he does right, and a hug or two each day.” I followed this suggestion, and eventually, because of Jennie, I discovered a lovable little boy. Looking back, I have to admit that she taught me so much. The days I spent with her have become one of my happiest memories. 12.What does the underlined part mean in the fourth paragraph? A. I was unsure of how to deal with my son. B. I decided to give up my job. C. I faced financial difficulties. D. I was very disappointed with myself. 13.How did the author and Jennie’s friendship start to grow? A. They both were interested in children’s education. B. They both liked a novel, The Little Prince. C. They often chatted together about their hobbies. D. They both studied in the same school. 14.We learn from the text that _______ A. the author has the gift of seeing with the heart. B. the author had many sisters before meeting Jennie. C. the author had lost her mother before her marriage. D. the author seldom praised her son in the past. 15.The text is mainly about _______ A. how to control children properly. B. the fact that we should see nature differently. C. the influence of friendship in life. D. how friendship begins and disappears. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项有两项为多余选项。 Do you ever feel like you read something over and over but you just can’t seem to remember it? 16 However, we all have to do it at some point for work or for school. Here are a few steps that will help us study more effectively and remember the information. 1. Set a goal. Before you even start reading, it is important to set a goal. What do you hope you learn by reading the material? What key points will you be required to know at a later date? 17 If not, you should pay more attention to the information you are looking for. 2. Do the following things. First you need to notice the title above each section. That will tell you what the section is about. 18 Read the first and last sentences of each paragraph slowly and carefully and re-read them if you have to. 3. Familiarize (使熟悉) yourself with the material. 19 So for a job, you might search online for something similar to what you are reading. For students, school websites are useful or another textbook may be able to explain words in a way that is easier to understand. 4. Review the material. After you have read and understood the material, review it a few times a day. 20 Studies have shown that on average it takes several (anywhere from three to eight) times reading and reviewing a material before it becomes part of your permanent memory. A. It can be very helpful to refer to extra material. B. It can be hard to read something and keep it in mind. C. It is easier to remember concepts when you rewrite them. D. Also, topic sentences are valuable sources of information. E. If everything is important, you will have to work a little harder. F.
