News B "Have you got a light?" This question is the most common between smokers. What if this question was to come from an unusual source? In May 2012, the National Health Promotion Foundation posted an anti-smoking advertisement onto YouTube. The anti-smoking ad has quickly been known as the "most powerful anti-smoking ad". The anti-smoking video, called the "Smoking Kid", features children walking up to adult smokers asking for a light. The children in the ad are actors but the adults smoking are unsuspecting participants in the project. The video begins with the statement "adults know that smoking is harmful, but don’t remind themselves of this fact ". Once a "smoking kid" approaches the adults, every adult asked is shocked that a child with a cigarette in hand is asking for a light. The first adult starts by saying, "I’m not giving it to you," and the video goes on to state "Every adult filmed said no and reminded the children that smoking is bad." Before going away, the kid hands each adult a booklet after being turned down for a light. The booklet says, "You worry about me, but why not about yourself?" Each adult looks around for the child as their faces are filled with confusion and discomfort. The video shows that a few of the smokers quickly threw away their cigarettes or put their cigarettes away, showing that this experiment was effective at that moment. The most influential element in the ad isn't the use of children or the responses from the smoking adults. It comes down to something much simpler than that. Why is it that we worry about other people, forgetting to worry about ourselves? 24.According to the text, the anti-smoking ad is ______. A.unusual B.shocking C.encouraging D.influential 25.The underlined word "unsuspecting" in the second paragraph probably means ______ A.uninformed B.unwilling C.unfortunate D.unacceptable 26.What are the adults’ reactions to the children asking for a light? A.They pay no attention to children's request. B.They look around for children's parents. C.They reject kids’ request and educate them. D.They quickly throw children's cigarettes away. 27.The best title of the text might be ______. A.Keep away from smoking, adults B.Give up smoking, for your own sake C.Tell your children not to smoke D.Reject a child asking for a light C For busy working parents and heavily scheduled school kids, family mealtime is out of fashion. But supermarkets are trying to attract families back to the dinner table. There is a cost if family members have meals apart: research shows that teenagers who don’t eat with their parents face a greater risk of drug and alcohol problems. “The more often kids have dinner with their parents, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs,” said Joseph Califano Jr., head of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, which did the research. Stores are familiar with the idea and will start telling shoppers about the findings and encouraging them to share meals together at home, instead of separately or at restaurants. The food marketing Institute will give $25,000 to the center and help stores promote the center’s Family Day in September. Many stores have grab-and-go dinners and recipe cards. Some have kiosks where people can taste a main dish, and then pick out side dishes. “Our members have worked hard to try to have easily prepared food either ready to eat or ready to take home,” said Tim Hammonds, the institute’s president and chief executive. Los Angeles-based Contessa Premium Foods makes frozen delicious meals, which a family can heat in 10 minutes to 12 minutes. “That’s nearly as fast as a TV dinner,” said president and chief executive John Z. Blazevich, “but is healthier and makes people feel like they actually cooked.” “The preparation is the hardest part, so we try to combine a variety of tastes and flavors from around the world and make it fast and easy,” he said. “Eating at home helps keep meals healthy and teaches kids how to eat right. If we can get people back to having family dinners, parents back to being engaged with their kids, it will have a surprising impact,” he said. 28.The reasons why family mealtime is out of fashion are the following EXCEPT __________. A.the parents are busy with work B.the children are not fond of family meal C.the children have less spare time D.it will take much time to cook and eat at home 29.The underlined word “cost” in paragraph 2 can be explained as ___________. A.gains B.a sum of money C.something you lose D.advantage 30.According to the passage, stores are trying to attract families back to the dinner table by the following ways EXCEPT ________. A.telling the parents the disadvantages of having dinner separately. B.offering various prepared food to make family cooking fast and easy. C.helping housewives prepare their meals at home. D.taking part in Family Day activities in September. 31.What would be the best title for the passage? A.Supermarkets Urges Families to Dinner Table B.Family Day is Promoted in September C.Parents should Cook Meals for Kids D.Family Mealtime is out of Fashion D Any list of the world's top ten most famous paintings will surely include Leonardo da Vinci 's Mona Lisa.Part of the painting's attraction is its mystery. Those lucky enough to have a view of the Mona Lisa at the Louvre often stare in awe, surprised by the smile that seems to flicker(忽隐忽现).Staring at a reproduction of the work produces the same effect. Now she's smiling, but then she's not. What's the deal with Mona Lisa's smile? Harvard scientist Margaret Livingstone is pretty sure she's solved the puzzle. After careful studies on human brains, Livingstone reasoned that the famous painting's flickering smile is caused by the way human beings see. Our eyes use two separate regions to see.One is central vision, used to see colors and pick out details such as fine print. The other is the vision around, used to observe lights, shadows, black and white contrasts. When we look at a person's face, according to Livingstone, we usually focus centrally on the eyes.Staring at Mona Lisa's eyes, our less accurate vision notices the mouth, picking up shadows from the cheekbones. The shadows play tricks, looking like a smile. But when we look directly at the mouth, our central vision doesn't see the shadows, and so the smile suddenly disappears. As our eyes observe different parts of the painting, Mona's smile seems to show up or disappear. Did Leonardo da Vinci intend to create this flickering smile effect? Perhaps. In any case, he was talented enough to paint shadows so good as to puzzle viewers for centuries.Meanwhile, Mona Lisa will keep smiling. And not. 32.Staring at Mona Lisa, people are amazed because _____. A.it is one of the world's top ten most famous paintings B.the reproduction of the work produces the same effect C.they are lucky enough to have a view at the Louvre D.Mona Lisa's smile seems to disappear sometimes 33.The central vision is used to see ______. A.lights and shadows C.black and white contrasts B.colors and pick out details D.fine paintings 34.While looking at a person's face, the first we focus on is ____. A.eyes B.brains C.mouth D.cheekbone 35.What can you infer from the passage? A.Leonardo da Vinci created the flickering smile effect by design. B.Our eyes use many separate regions to see paintings. C.The flickering smile effect is caused by the shadows. D.Mona Lisa is the most famous painting in the world. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Solutions to Boost Your Confidence 36 . Make a list of three things that you would like to improve on and then under each item write a few bullet pints on how you will go about making this change. Focus on the small steps for signs of improvement. Be sure to focus on smaller victories. M: My younger brother has a baseball tournament then… W: OK. Text 2 W: I need a bike to get to my new job. How much does this one cost? M: That bike is the cheapest one we have, and it costs $200. But this bike is much better and costs $220. W: Thanks, but I’ll take the cheaper one. I also want this helmet that costs $30. (2) Text 3 M: What exactly are you looking for? W: I am looking for a collection of the 19th century European paintings. M: Is it the book on your left, the one with the yellow cover? (3) W: Let me see. Yeah, this is what I want. Thanks a lot. Text 4 W: Well, your computer is broken. It won’t turn on. How did you break it? M: I don’t know. I dropped it two weeks ago, but it was working well until yesterday. It’s seven years old, though. I think it was almost time to get a new one, anyway. (4) Text 5 W: My father is a man who knows what’s important in life — he has a demanding job, but he still makes time for his children. (5) M: That’s really special. Most people with important jobs aren’t able to do that. Text 6 W: Wow, I had no idea you were such a good artist! When did you learn to paint? M: I started studying one year ago. But I’ve been drawing since I was five years old. (6) I’ve also been taking pictures for six years, when my dad gave me my first camera for my birthday. I think photography has really helped me with my painting. W: Your art is great! (7) Why don’t you tell people you’re an artist? M: I’m too shy to tell anybody about my art. Text 7 M: Which countries have you been to? W: I’ve been to most of the countries in Europe, several countries in Asia — China, Japan, Korea, and Thailand — and to the United States and Canada. (8) M: I thought you had been to Australia too. W: No, but I’m planning on visiting Australia and New Zealand soon. Which is the most beautiful country you’ve been to? M: I think I’d say Norway. W: Isn’t it really cold there? M: Well, the north of Norway is almost always cold, but farther south, it can be fairly warm in summer. It’s a wet country, so there’s snow almost everywhere in winter. (9) Text 8 M: Hey, I’m calling to say that I’m running late to the airport. Can you make sure that the plane doesn’t take off without me? W: I’ll try. M: Thank you. I’m just sitting here in traffic. (10) There must be an accident or something. I’ve been here for 30 minutes, and I’ve barely made it onto the bridge. W: Oh, that’s not good. M: This traffic is really stressing me out. (12) I don’t want to have to take a later flight! W: I’m sure you’ll be able to make it. The plane doesn’t leave for another 2 hours. (11) M: Yes, but Google Maps is telling me that I won’t be at the airport for another hour and 45 minutes, which means I’ll only have 15 minutes to check my bags, get through security, and arrive at the gate. That’s impossible! W: You can ask to skip to the head of the line in security. They’re usually pretty good about that when you think you might miss your flight. M: I hope so. Plus, I had to drive almost an hour to the hospital every morning. (14) W: Will you make more money working at the bank? M: No, I will make a little less. But if I work hard, I will get promoted. W: I thought you were going to look for a new job in California, where your family live. (15) We miss you, and you never have enough time to visit us. Why can’t you work at a bank in California? M: I am going to work at this bank for a year. Then I will try to transfer to a branch in California near you and dad! (16) I really want to move back to California, but I can’t just pick up and leave. Working at this bank will give me some good experience. Text 10 Here, we have Washington Square Park, which is one of the most famous New York City public parks. It has played a central role in every major cultural movement in New York City for the last 100 years. As you can see, it is located between 6th St. and 4th St. in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. (17) The park covers eight city blocks, or just under ten acres. Surrounding the park on all sides is New York University; those brick buildings covered in dark green plants have been around since 1871, when the park first opened. Many of those buildings used to serve as homes and studios for artists, and the benches in the park are popular places for painters, poets, dancers, and singers to get together. The park’s fountain area has long been one of the city’s most popular spots for residents and tourists, and children love to skate and play games around the fountain. (19) There are two special areas for dogs to run around, (18) and during the hot summer months, many food and drink stands are set up inside the park. One of Washington Square Park’s most recognizable features is the Washington Arch, which was built in 1889. (20) It was modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, which was built in 1806.查看更多
