The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries. Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog’s legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places. This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn’t last long. The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately. The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides(杀虫剂) and medicines. Soon there was no money left. Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases. Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning. 21. From paragraph 1 we learn that the villagers ______. A. were poor but somewhat content B. worked very hard for centuries C. lived a different life from their forefathers D. dreamed of having a better life 22. Why did the villagers agree to sell frogs? A. The frogs made too much noise. B. They wanted to please the visitors. C. They needed money to buy medicine. D. The frogs were easy money. 23. What might be the cause of the children’s sickness? A. The crops didn't do well. B. There were too many insects. C. The visitors brought in diseases. D. The pesticides were overused. 24. What can we infer from the last sentence of the text? A. The harmony between man and nature is important. B. Health is more important than money. C. Happiness comes from peaceful life in the country. D. Good old days will never be forgotten. B When men get together, they seldom talk about their feelings or inner thoughts. However, they talk about a lot, like their newest computer, how to repair their car, or even business. Talk might move to the best place to find fish or women, jump to computer games, then continue to the sport of the season. They also like to tell jokes each other and spend a fair amount of time playing one-up and boasting(吹牛). Men seldom call each other to chat. When man meets woman, he usually wants to make a good impression. Many single men try hard to carry on amusing, fun, and pleasant conversations. They use conversation to discover her interests and feelings in order to learn how to be attractive to her. Some men, either out of nervousness or ignorance, spend most of the time talking about themselves, often appearing to brag about their achievements or talk endlessly about their problems or work. Even the quietest man talks to his woman when love is new. When women get together, they talk about feelings and relationships, their work and their family. They enjoy talking but also want the give and take of talk, then listen. Women often call each other to chat. Conversation is an important part of most women’s lives. As relationships progress, however, many a man turns on the television and forgets how to talk. This raises anger and cry from his woman partner who says, “You never talk to me anymore.” Some men start talking. Many, however, mainly discuss their own achievements and problems. When the woman starts talking about her favorite subjects: feelings, family, relationships, friends and her work, many men lose interest or bring the conversation back to themselves. Pretty soon, the man is back to staring at the television each night, wondering where his relationship has gone. The woman is talking to her friends, mom, sister, or neighbor, often about that very relationship and how she is hurting. 25. What can we know about men from the first two paragraphs? A. They like to talk about practical matters. B. They are willing to expose their inner thoughts. C. They prefer to take adventurous travels. D. They often call each other to chat about work. 26. Which can replace the underlined part “brag about” in Paragraph 4? A. show off B. dream about C. put forward D. care for 27. What is the same topic in both men’s and women’s talk? A. Family. B. Jokes. C. Friends. D. Work. 28. What is the best title of this passage? A. How a man makes a good impression on a woman. B. Good relationship between men and women. C. Men talk; women talk; do they talk together? D. Talking, the women’s main tool in communication. C There have always been a lot of commonly believed but false ideas about being fat and doing exercise. Some people believe that they can’t help putting on weight as they get older, while others hold that if they stop exercising, their muscles will turn into fat. Here are some more myths: I’ll never lose weight --- I come from a fat family. Wrong! While we can’t change the body type we are born with, we can’t blame our genes for making us fat. There’s plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families, and the main reason is that they share the same habits of eating too much and exercise too little. I am fat because I burn calories slowly. Wrong! Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism (新陈代谢). If fact, although fat people consume more energy that slim people, they also fail to realize how much they eat! Keeping a diary can help you work out your daily food intake more accurately. Exercise is boring. Wrong! Anything will become boring if you do it many times. The key is to develop a balanced and varied program that’s fun as well as progressive. If you enjoy a Sunday walk, take a different route. If you do Yoga, try a tai chi class. If you like swimming, set yourself a distance or time challenge. No pain, no gain.] Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something’s wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. You may experience mild discomfort as you begin to exercise regularly, but this your body adapting to the positive changes in your lifestyle and the aches should disappear relatively quickly. If you don’t, rest and seek medical advice. 29. What does the author think about being fat? A. It is the family genes that make people fat. B. People are fat because they consume too little energy.[m] C. A diary of exercise can prevent people from becoming fat. D. It is the result of people’s unbalanced lifestyle. 30. According to the author, how can we make exercise more interesting? A. By taking varied exercise. B. By choosing simple exercise. C. By doing regular exercise. D. By sticking to outdoor exercise. 31. What is the author’s opinion about “No pain, no gain” in exercising? A. Keeping fit is essentially a painful experience. B. Exercise should be stopped if continuous pain is felt. C. Pain in exercise is a precondition(前兆) for reaching your goal. D. Getting used to pain leads to positive changes in your body. 32. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To declare the importance of keeping fit. B. To clarify some misunderstanding about fatness and exercise. C. To confirm what has long been believed about keeping fit. D. To explain some medical facts about being fat and doing exercise. D Do dogs understand us? Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think. A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩). In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive. Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种) known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months. It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return! 33. From paragraph 2 we know that ______. A. animals are as clever as human beings B. dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzees C. chimpanzees have very good word-learning skills D. dogs have similar learning abilities as 3-year-old children 34. Both experiments show that______. A. Rico is smart enough to get all commands right B. Rico can recognize different things including toys C. Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematics D. Rico won't forget the names of objects once recognizing them 35. Which of the following statements is true? A.The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collie's mental abilities. B. Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training. C. The border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects. D. Rico is born to understand its owner's commands. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Most of us lead a busy life. 36 We think, “If I reached my goal, then I would be happy”, or “If I could get a better job, then I would enjoy life.” But why not enjoy life right now? Firstly, take time to notice and appreciate the beauty in your own surroundings. 37 “There is a great big world of wonder and beauty around us!” And as Brodersen explains,“Look for the beauty of the sunrise and of a friend’s smile that brightens your day. Open your eyes to see the beauty you might not normally see. Doing so helps to cheer you up.” Secondly, taking time to experience some simple pleasures can also bring joy to your heart and ease your stress. Take me for example. 38 One universal simple pleasure is finding things that make you laugh. Make time to laugh every day. Thirdly, don’t take your family and friends for granted. Rich, rewarding relationships add greatly to the enjoyment of life. When you think of someone, why not call, e-mail or write them? 39 As Wayne Lawton explains, “Invest time in relationships. Remove the attitude, what’s in it for me? Happiness is found in putting others’ interests, desires and concerns ahead of our own whenever possible. Selfishness is a dead-end street.” 40 A. Be aware of beauty in nature. B. In my spare time, I enjoy collecting stamps and reading novels. C. Driven by the “urgent”, we forget to enjoy life. D. A short e-mail or phone call can make a world of difference to someone. E. You don’t need to travel far to find beauty. F. I delight in simple things like my favorite tea drink, a bubble bath or family photos. G. So please treasure relationship. 第三节:完形填空(共20小题,每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D) 中,选出可以填入空白的最佳选项。 That afternoon, a disease forced Diana to experience an emergency operation to deliver the couple’s new daughter.
