One of the questions surrounding climate change is how it might affect the food supply for a growing global population. A new study suggests that researchers have been overlooking how two key human responses to climate—how much land people choose to farm, and the number of crops they plant—will affect food production in the future. The new study focused on the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, an emerging(新兴的)global breadbasket(产粮地区)that as of 2013 supplied 10 percent of the world’s soybeans. The researchers used variations in temperature and precipitation(降水)across the state over an eight-year period to estimate the sensitivity of the region’s agricultural production to climate change. Those historical comparisons can help in making predictions about the sensitivity of agriculture to future climate change. The study found that, if the patterns from 2002 to 2008 hold in the future, an increase in average temperature in Mato Grosso of just 1 degree will lead to a 9 to 13 percent reduction in overall production of soy and corn. “This is worrisome given that the temperature in the study region is predicted to rise by 2 degrees by 2050,” said Avery Cohn, who led the study. Most studies of this kind look only at the extent to which climate shocks affect crop output. But researchers can miss critical dynamics(动力)that can affect overall output, says Leah VanWey, one of the study’s senior authors. “If you look at output alone, you’re not looking at all of the information because there are economic and social changes going on as well,” said VanWey. If output decreases, farmers may put less land area into production because it’s not profitable. Farmers may also vary the number of crops they plant in a growing season. Double cropping is common in Mato Grosso. But if the weather is bad, farmers may change their decision to plant a second crop. 8. The value of the new study lies in _________. A. increasing the number of crops people plant B. focusing on an emerging global breadbasket C. making predictions about human responses to climate change D. controlling people’s choice of their farming area and crop numbers 9. According to Avery Cohn, by 2050, the overall production of soy and corn will _________. A. remain almost unchanged B. decrease by more than 9% C. increase by from 9% to 13% D. decrease by more than 18% 10. What can we know about the similar studies mentioned in paragraph 3? A. They can’t provide exact information to farmers. B. They don’t take into consideration some key factors. C. Their discouraging results largely affect overall crop output. D. They pay too much attention to economic and social changes. C 9. D 10. The study found that, if the patterns from 2002 to 2008 hold in the future, an increase in average temperature in Mato Grosso of just 1 degree will lead to a 9 to 13 percent reduction in overall production of soy and corn. 而根据“This is worrisome given that the temperature in the study region is predicted to rise by 2 degrees by 2050,可知道2050年会升高2度,因此,减产量会在18%-26%之间,所以D正确。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段But researchers can miss critical dynamics(动力)that can affect overall output, says Leah VanWey, one of the study’s senior authors.可知之前的研究忽视了影响总产量的关键动力,所以B正确。4. C【山东省淄博实验中学、淄博五中2019届高三上学期第一次教学诊断】 Many leading AI researchers think that in a matter of decades, artificial intelligence will be able to do not merely some of our jobs, but all of our jobs, forever transforming life on Earth. The reason why many reject this as science fiction is that we’ve traditionally thought of intelligence as something mysterious that can only exist in biological organisms, especially humans. But such an idea is unscientific. From my point of view as a physicist and AI researcher, intelligence is simply a certain kind of information-processing performed by elementary particles(基本粒子) moving around, and there is no law of physics that says one can’t build machines more intelligent than us in all ways. This suggests that we’ve only seen the tip of the intelligence iceberg and that there is an amazing potential to unlock the full intelligence that is potential in nature and use it to help humanity. If we get it right, the upside is huge. Since everything we love about civilization is the product of intelligence, amplifying (扩大) our own intelligence with AI has the potential to solve tomorrow’s toughest problems. For example, why risk our loved ones dying in traffic accidents that self-driving cars could prevent or dying of cancers that AI might help us find cures for? Why not increase productivity through automation (自动化) and use AI to accelerate our research and development of affordable sustainable (可持续的) energy? I’m optimistic that we can develop rapidly with advanced AI as long as we win the race between the growing power of our technology and the knowledge with which we manage it. But this requires giving up our outdated concept of learning form mistakes. That helped us win the race with less powerful technology: We messed up with fire and then invented fire extinguishers (灭火器), and we messed up with cars and then invented seat belts. However, it’s an awful idea for more powerful technologies, such as nuclear weapons or superintelligent AI— where even a single mistake is unacceptable and we need to get things right the first time. 8. How do many people feel about leading AI researchers’ predictions? A. Worried B. Curious C. Doubtful D. Disappointed 9. What does the author think of intelligence? A. We know little about it. B. It belongs to human beings. C. It is too difficult to understand. D. We have a good command of it. 【答案】8. C 9. A 【解析】 这是一篇说明文。作者是一个物理学家和人工智能研究者,他向我们阐述了我们对人工智能发展的误解及人工智能的优势。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段的This suggests that we’ve only seen the tip of the intelligence iceberg and that there is an amazing potential to… 可知,作者认为我们对人工智能的了解只是冰山一角,故选A。 7. B【河南省中原名校2019届高三第一次质量考评】 A new family moved in next door and I got to meet the mother of the family, Lydia.Lydia is Korean, and her family moved to our city so her husband could go to graduate school. We started talking, and she was apologetic about how bad her English was, but I didn't care. I knew how hard it was to learn a second language. I enjoyed chatting with Lydia as we watched our kids play. It was what came next that challenged me: Lydia asked if I'd be willing to help her with her English. Now, I am not a teacher. I admire teachers, and I'm grateful for teachers, and it's because I admire what they do so much that I was very very sure that I couldn't do it myself. But Lydia was sure that she wanted my help. I was doubtful. I wasn't sure my "help" was even worth being called by that name. But because she asked me,I said "yes." And that was the beginning of a friendship. Lydia and I spent afternoons sitting together and reading the newspaper, and as we did, she asked me questions when she had them - questions about language, yes, but also questions about the new culture she found herself in. In turn, I asked my own questions, growing curious about her home country and culture. We bonded over our shared faith and our struggles as mothers of kids with special needs, When I complimented(恭维) her cooking, she began to teach me about Korean food, eventually leading to a shared trip to explore the Korean grocery stores in our city. Because of Lydia, 1 learned more about my own hometown than I ever could have learned by myself.I'm still not sure that I'm any good as a teacher. But I'm grateful I said "yes" when my neighbor asked me to help her with her English. That meant spending extra time with my neighbor, and that extra time meant she didn't remain just my neighbor. She became my friend; . 4. What was Lydia sorry about? A. Her bad English. B. Her carelessness. C. Nobody teaching her English. D. Her poor life in a new place. 6. Why was the author grateful at the last paragraph? A. She managed to learn English well. . B. She made friends with her neighbor.. C. She learned how to cook Korean food. . : D.
