With fears that the amount of plastic in the oceans could soon equal the weight of fish in the sea, scientists have become increasingly concerned about the effects on the marine environment. Now a study published in the journal Science has found that baby perch(鲈鱼)will actively choose to eat plastic over the plankton they would normally feed on. The researchers said this greatly increased death rates of the perch, stopping their growth and appearing to change usually behavior. For example, thy are losing the ability to smell a predator(捕食者), which makes them much more vulnerable. For example, they seemed to lose the ability to smell a predator that made them much more vulnerable. Professor Peter Eklov, a co-author of the Science paper, said: “This is the first time an animal has been found to prefer to eat plastic particles over food. Increases in microplastic pollution in the Baltic Sea and decreases of the coastal basic species(物种)have recently been noticed. When placed in a tank, perch exposed to microplastic were eaten four times more quickly than perch that had not been eating plastic.” Fellow researcher Oona Lpnnstedt stressed the effects of fish eating large amounts of plastic were likely to be felt throughout the food chain. “If early life-history stages of other species are similarly affected by microplastics, this will in turn increase death rates, so the effects on marine ecosystems could be lasting,” she said. Microplastic is produced as larger pieces of plastic waste are broken down in the environment, but large quantities of microfibers from synthetic clothes---materials essentially made of plastic---are produced each time they are washed and are small enough to pass through waste water treatment plants and get into the sea. Cosmetics(化妆品)companies are also continuing to put microplastic pieces into their products, but the industry says it will try to stop using them by 2020. 21.What are the scientists worried about? A. Lots of us are using Twitter and Facebook to thumb rides, and not just to school. It’s awkward to be refused when you call a friend and ask for a ride. But with Twitter, you just look for other people heading the same way. It may sound risky, so many teens stay within their own social circles to find rides, and don’t branch out beyond friends when asking on Twitter just like me, but to some young people, especially those taking longer trips, stranger danger is less of a concern. “I think the digital connection of young people is really important, because younger generations grew up sharing things on line, sharing files, photos, music, etc, so they’ve been very used to sharing,” said Juliet Schor, a sociology professor at Boston College. The sharing economy got big during the recession (经济衰退), allowing people to access more goods, services using technology and even to share costs. And that technology, for me, is what the car was for my mom, a gateway to more freedom, like what my friend Earl says, “The symbol of freedom isn’t the car any more because there’s technology out there connecting you to a car.” According to the researchers at the University of Michigan, 30 years ago, eight in ten American 18-year-olds had a driver’s license compared to six in ten today. So it’s not that surprising that on my 16th birthday I wasn’t rushing to get a license but an iPhone. “Driving, for young people, does mean they have to disconnect from their technology, and that’s a negative. So if they could sit in the passage side and still be connected, that’s going to be a plus.” Schor continued. To me, another plus is that ridesharing represents something, something much bigger than trying to save money. I see it as evidence that people still depend on each other. My generation shares their cars and apartments the way neighbors used to share cups of sugar. For the system to work, some of us still need our own cars. But until I get my own version of the silver Super Beetle, you can find me on Twitter. 28.The American teens prefer to possess an iPhone as a birthday gift because ______. A. it is most fashionable and cool B. they are bored with driving cars C. they are fond of being connected D. it is much cheaper than a car 29.We can learn from the text that ______. A. Twitter is a website for teens to make friends and achieve goals B. ridesharing can be seen as a sign that people still count on each other C. drwing cars for teens means a plus and connecting with technology D. having a car and cost-sharing symbolize more freedom for the author’s mother 30.Professor Juliet would agree that ______. A. young people will sit waiting to be contacted by reading a passage B. sharing economy is bound to be responsible for the recession C. young people tend to share a car with strangers by means of Twitter D. being connected via technology comes first for young people 31.The best title for the passage is probably ______. A. Twitter, an Awesome Website B. Cars or iPhone C. Teens Use Twitter to Thumb Rides D. Cool Teens on the Go D “Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy – they’re given after all. Choices can be hard.” –– Jeff Bezos. I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion. I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn’t already have a good job.” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but ultimately (最后), I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all. After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices. 32.What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore? A. His dream of being an inventor. B. The support of his wife. C. The greatly increasing usage of the Internet. D. Millions of exciting titles. 33.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?. A. The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him. B. He would be very excited if he tried it out. C. He would be always having a doubt if he didn’t try. D. The decision to not try the online bookstore would terrify him. 34.We can know from the passage that _______. A. the boss thought the idea was suitable for the author B. the author wanted someone else to try the idea C. the author might not regret if he failed the idea D. the author might go back to his boss if he failed 35.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Cleverness and Kindness B. The Starting of Amazon C. Following My Passion D.
