But Su Hanting, a 16-year-old boy, spent last year’s Spring Festival Eve at a desk, translating a classic work of English literature. Su started translating The Story of King Arthur and His Knights (1903), a 120,000-word book by an American author Howard Pyle, during his winter vacation. He didn’t take a break during the biggest festival of the year. “Every second counts,” Su said. Like many teenagers of his age, Su enjoys reading both Chinese and English classics. But the idea of translating only occurred to him by chance —— he was just helping his classmates to figure out some of the medieval (中世纪的) place names in this book. But once he started, he couldn’t stop. For the ancient place names and the titles of the knights, he searched online, looked for maps in the library and read historical documents related to King Arthur. Meanwhile, he also read the original novel over and over again to make sure of the thoughts and emotions as well as possible. His preparation paid off. It only took him three months, mostly during his winter vacation, to translate the book. And that includes the time he lost after finishing 80,000 words that were gone because of a computer bug. The translated version came out on November 15th and has won high praise from experts. 21. What did Su do on the Spring Festival Eve? A. Watched TV. B. Played with his cell phone. C. Continued his translation. D. Talked to his friends. 22. What did Su’s classmates ask him to do? A. To bury a lot of original novels. B. To find some place names of a book. C. To surf the internet for information. D. To look for some maps in the library. 23. What can we conclude from the last paragraph? A. The book contained 80,000 words. B. It took him half a year to finish the work. C. What he did was actually in vain. D. Something was wrong with his computer. 24. The underlined words “paid off” in the last paragraph probably mean “ ”. A. worked B. cost C. failed D. finished B Sweden’s blood service is enlisting new technology to help push back against blood shortages. One new plan, where donors are sent automatic text messages telling them when their blood has actually been used, has caught the public eye. People who donate initially receive a “Thank you” text when they give blood, but they get another message when their blood makes it into somebody else’s veins. The service says the messages give donors more positive feedback about how they’ve helped their fellow citizens – which encourages them to donate again. “It’s a great feeling to know you made such a big difference and maybe even saved someone else’s life,” says Ms Blom Wiberg. “We get a lot of visibility in social media and traditional media thanks to the SMS. But above all we believe it makes our donors come back to us, and donate again.” During National Blood Donation Week street signs and shop fronts around the country are having the letters “O” and “A” quietly removed, representing the missing blood types. “We simply can’t ignore the fact that there has been a severe reduction in the number of new donors coming forward —— a trend seen across the world,” Jon Latham said. “While we can meet the needs of patients now, it’s important that we strengthen the donor base for the future.” In Stockholm, residents can go to the local blood service’s website and see a live chart of how much blood is left. “The same info as we have internally is shown externally,” says Ms Blom Wiberg. The thinking is that when stocks run low, people will respond if they know there is a problem. Other initiatives rolled out in some areas include letting donors sign a contract agreeing that authorities are allowed to aggressively bother them by text messages, Facebook, and email until they donate blood. The messages include light-hearted threats, such as: “We won’t give up until you bleed.” 25. The text messages blood donors receive are about________. A. who has used their blood in the operating room B. how important their blood is to a patient C. when their blood actually saved a life D. where blood is also in great demand 26. According to Jon, there is a trend that _________. A. more countries are strengthening their donor base B. the patients’ need for blood can’t be satisfied C. blood types of O and A are urgently needed D. fewer people donate blood around the world 27. To ensure stable blood supplies, Stockholm ___________. A. asks residents to sign a lifelong contract of donating blood B. allows everyone to check the amount of blood in store C. passes a law on appealing to people to donate blood D. forces people to donate blood with text messages 28. What is the main idea of the text? A. Sweden is facing a lack of blood for patients at present. B. Sweden uses social media to inspire people to donate blood again. C. Swedish people can measure the blood sugar level at a hospital freely. D. Swedish blood donors get text messages as feedback and encouragement. C Kayla Perkins explains what is in her bedroom, “I throw something on the floor and I know right where it is.” However, her parents haven’t caught on. Even Kayla admits that, at the worst, her room is a mess. Most families at some point have at least one child whose room looks like a landfill (废物填埋区). The mess can throw the whole household disorder. Dirty clothes pile up; dirty dishes get lost in the mess and smell bad; homework is lost; and valuable things are ruined. Some parents let it go, believing that a bedroom is private space for children to manage as they wish. Others lecture their children, offer rewards for cleaning, or punish them when they don’t. What doesn’t work, parenting experts say, is constant lectures, threats or getting very angry. Mrs. Perkins says they picked up all the clothes on Kayla’s floor, and hid them. When Kayla came back to a bare bedroom, there was screaming and shouting, “How can I live without my clothes?” Mrs. Perkins required Kayla to earn her clothes back by doing housework. These days, she keeps her room cleaning. Humor can help, too. For example, since the 14-year-old daughter wasn’t bothered by the dirty clothes all over her floor, perhaps the whole family could start using her room as a place to store dirty clothes. Her attitude changed after her family did that. By the time she gave in and cleaned up her room a few days later, even she was laughing. Parents expert, Jim Fay, also recommends that parents first ask children in a nice way to clean up and agree on a reasonable time limit. Children often behave better if you treat them in the way you would want to be treated by your boss at work — with respect and high expectations. 29. What is the main idea of this passage? A. Parents should help children with bedroom cleaning. B. How to give children clean, private space. C. How to make children clean up their bedrooms. D. Parents should lecture their children to make them do some housework. 30. According to the passage, what always happens in Kayla’s bedroom? A. She often spends a lot of time looking for her clothes. B. It is clean and smells good. C. Her dirty clothes pile up on the floor. D. The whole family’s dirty clothes lie everywhere. 31. What do we know from the passage? A. Children never admit their rooms are a mess, even though they are. B. Different parents differ over their children’s bedroom cleaning. C. Children often behave better if you treat them like your boss. D. The 14-year-old daughter felt uncomfortable when her room was too clean. 32. Which of the following is NOT useful if parents want their children to clean up their rooms? A. Hiding their clothes. B. Verbal threats. C. Humorous ideas. D. Respect and high expectations. It puts its head on your knee and gazes at you as if you were a Rembrandt painting. It bounds indoors with enthusiasm when you call it. However, around age 13, your adoring little puppy (child) turns into a big cat (teenager). Then when you tell it to come inside, it looks amazed, as if wondering who died. Instead of following your doorsteps, it disappears. 37 Not realizing that the dog is now a cat, you think something must be desperately wrong with it. Since you’re the one who raised it, you assume that you did something wrong. Now you’re dealing with a cat. Filled with guilt and fear, you redouble your efforts to make your pet behave. 38 Call it, and it runs away. Tell it to sit, and it jumps on the counter. Instead of continuing to act like a dog owner, you can learn to behave like a cat owner. Put a dish of food near the door, and let it come to you. 39 You sit still, and it will come, seeking that warm, comforting lap it has not entirely forgotten. Be there to open the door for it. One day your grown-up child will walk into the kitchen, give you a big kiss and say, “you’ve been working hard all day. Let me get those dishes for you.” 40 A. You won’t see it again until it gets hungry. B. Teenagers can understand and appreciate their parents’ love. C. It’s so easy to be a dog owner. D. Children as cats can turn to their parents. E. However, all the efforts made before now produce the opposite of the desired result. F. Then you’ll realize your cat is a dog again. G. But remember that a cat needs your help and your affection, too. My younger brother would be leaving for college and I was leaving for a new job in Europe.
