They had farms, beautiful palaces, and cities with many buildings. The Mayan people knew a lot about nature and the world around them. This knowledge helped them to live a better life than most people of that time. In ancient Mexico there were many small clearings (空旷地) in the forest. In each clearing was a village with fields of corn, beans, and other crops around it. To clear the land for farms, the Maya cut down trees with stone axes(斧). They planted seeds by digging holes in the ground with pointed sticks. A farmer was able to grow crops that produced food for several people, but not every Maya had to be a farmer. Some were cloth makers, builders, or priests. The Maya believed in many gods. The people built large temples to honor the Mayan gods. Skillful workers built cities around these temples. It was difficult for them to construct these cities, because they had no horses to carry the heavy stones. Workers had to carry all of the building materials themselves. Today, many of these ancient Mayan cities and temples are still standing. Although the cities that the Maya built were beautiful, very few of the people lived in them. Usually, only the priests lived in the cities. The other people lived in small villages in the forests. Their houses were much simpler than the elaborate structures in the cities. They lived in small huts(棚屋) with no windows. The walls were made of poles covered with dried mud, and the roof was made of grass or leaves. The Mayan priests studied the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets. They made a calendar based on what they had learned. The Mayan calendar was far more accurate than the European calendars of the time. Around the year800, the Maya left their villages and cities, never to return. No one knows why this happened. 24. The Maya lived in Mexico__________. A. before the Spanish arrived B. after they arrived there in the 1500s C. only for a few hundred years D. to learn about nature and people there 25. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 2 and 3? A. All of the Mayan Indians were farmers. B. The Mayan Indians didn’t believe in gods. C. And the two of them said, "It’s unbelievable!" Nine-year-old Rubina Ali, and Azharudd in Ismail, 10, were living a very different life and apparently loving every minute of it. The two, some of the child stars of the Oscar-winning movie, Slum dog Millionaire(《贫民窟的百万富翁》), knew the Indian slums very well. That was where they grew up, and it is where they will return at the end of their Hollywood dream trip. But before going back home, there was an interview with the host, Ryan Seacrest. During the interview they smiled and repeated their disbelief in what was happening to them. To their surprise, their movie won first place in the Oscars. When the two received the award, it was late morning in the children’s home city of Mumbai, where their family, friends and many fellow residents of the slums watched the result from Hollywood. "I don’t really know what the Oscars are," Rubina’s mother said. "I’m just glad my daughter looks happy, though she told me she missed Indian food." "Our children lead a dog’s life," Rubina’s mother said, pointing out the rubbish everywhere, the open drains (下水道) and the lack of education opportunities. In a few days they will be back in Mumbai and back in the slums that are their home. Fortunately, according to media reports, the movie’s director, Danny Boyle, has promised to help the children he chose from the slum and make sure they will go to a proper school. The two don’t need to worry about their daily lives because of the Oscar success of Slum dog Millionaire. But the poverty and lack of opportunity -the central theme of the movie-is always all around. 28. Which of the following is NOT true about the two children? A. They were both excited about receiving the award. B. They had been having a difficult life in India. C. They were interviewed before they went back home. D. They were the only two child winners of the movie, Slum dog Millionaire. 29. When the children attended the Oscar ceremony in Hollywood, their family and friends were_________. A. doing what they did as usual B. watching TV in Mumbai C. watching the movie Slum dog Millionaire D. having a family party 30. What will happen to the two children after they return to India? A. They will go back to the miserable life as before. B. They will have a better education. C. They will act in movies as famous actors. D. They will leave school to learn acting. 31. According to the author, the value of the movie is that ________. A. it has been given an Oscar Award B. it has become popular all over the world C. it has made the children famous D. its central theme has become known to the public D More than four decades ago, British scientist Robert Edwards first witnessed the miracle of human life growing inside a test tube at his Cambridge lab. Since that ground-breaking moment, more than four million babies have been born through IVF and in 2010 his great contribution to science was finally recognized as he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine. The prize for Dr. Edwards, who was given a Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Award in 2008, includes a £900,000 cheque. The Nobel Assembly described IVF as “a milestone in modern medicine”. With the help of fellow scientist Patrick Steptoe, the Manchester-born physiologist developed IVF, leading to the birth of the world's first test tube baby. Dr. Steptoe died 10 years later but their work has transformed fertility(生育) treatment and given hope to millions of couples. It was a scientific breakthrough that changed the lives of millions of couples. They said, “His achievements have made it possible to treat infertility, a disease which makes humans unable to have a baby. This condition has been afflicting a large percentage of mankind, including more than 10% of all couples worldwide.” Professor Edwards, who has 5 daughters and 11 grandchildren, began his research at Cambridge University in 1963, after receiving his PhD in 1955. He once said, “The most important thing in life is having a child. Nothing is more special than a child.” With the help of fellow scientist Patrick Steptoe, Prof. Edwards founded the Bourn Hall clinic in Cambridge shire, which now treats more than 900 women a year. Each year, more than 30, 000 women in Britain now undergo IVF and 11,000 babies are born as a result of the treatment. But his work attracted widespread criticism from some scientists and the Catholic Church who said it was “unethical and immoral”. Martin Johnson, professor of reproductive(生殖的) sciences at the University of Cambridge, said the award was “long overdue”. He said, “We couldn't understand why the Nobel has come so late but he is delighted — this is the cherry on the cake for him.” Professor Edwards was too ill to give interviews but a statement released by his family said he was “thrilled and delighted”. 32. What is Robert Edwards' contribution to science? A. Seeing the wonder of the first tube baby growing. B. Enabling millions of couples to live a better life. C. Helping couples with infertility to have test tube babies. D. Challenging a disease which stops couples having a baby. 33. What does the underlined word “afflicting” in Paragraph 4 most probably refer to? A. Troubling. B. Developing. C. Improving. D. Frightening. 34. It can be inferred from Paragraph 6 and Paragraph 7 that ________. A. some people envied Professor Edwards for his being awarded B. different opinions were voiced on Professor Edwards' work C. Professor Edwards deserved the prize for his breakthrough D. the prize was late because the finding was first considered immoral 35. What might be the best title for the passage? A. Nobel Prize for IVF Expert Edwards 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 What should you think about in trying to find your career(职业)? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. 36 A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to do well at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general good result. 37 Knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs. Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metal work or cooking and look for a job where you can improve these skills. 38 You may have learned how to get to work on time and get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a certain industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job. 39 You may be all thumbs when you deal with tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not feel sorry for it. 40__. A. This does not have direct value for future job hunting. B. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. C. Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. D. Having a part-time job is a good way to find out your weak points. E. Instead, you should recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work. F. Although not all subjects can be used directly(直接地) in a job, they may have indirect value. G. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. At the age of three, I was discovered to be totally deaf. I'm sorry to know that you're having such a bad time at the moment. The truth is that everyone will have one of those periods when things seem to be going wrong, so you don't have to worry so much. The important thing is to learn to control your temper so that you may not do or say anything you’ll regret. Here are three useful tips: First, talk to someone you trust about how you feel. This is a good way of letting your anger out without hurting others or yourself. Second, go outdoors and play team games with your friends as physical exercise is an effective way to get rid of anger. And third, remain optimistic about your future. Such a positive attitude towards life can be helpful in lifting your spirits. I hope you'll soon feel calmer and carry on as normal. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 查看更多
