I decided to become beautiful, or at the very least, skinny. I stopped eating completely. Soon I began losing weight, which thrilled me, and I even grew to love the tiredness and the light headache that came with my poor diet, for those feelings meant that I was winning. As the season progressed, things had become tense between my head volleyball coach, Coach Smith, and me. She felt that something was wrong with my health. She talked with me about my eating and was angry that I wouldn’t listen to her when she tried to make me eat. She tried to persuade me in a determined way and so we fought constantly. Then my hunger started to affect my performance. I was so tired that practice and games were becoming a struggle. One afternoon, with hurt in her eyes, Coach Smith asked me what I had eaten and I told her nothing yet. She looked at me, disappointment in her eyes, knowing she couldn’t make me stop, and walked away. A couple of weeks later I attended a formal dinner for our volleyball team. I stood there as my coach managed to say something nice about me. I realized then that I had ruined my senior year by being disrespectful, and I had probably ruined hers as well. So that evening I wrote her a letter apologizing and thanking her. Then one Saturday, as I was reading in the library, I felt someone gently take my arm and say softly, “Lynn Jones, how are you doing?” I looked up and saw the familiar face. “Thanks for the letter,” she said. “It meant a lot.” When I think of a coach, I think of someone above me, someone who gives instruction — not a friend. But Coach Smith is different, and, like any other good friend, she dealt with my problem in a determined way even when I hated her for it at that time. I didn’t deserve her kindness, but she gave it anyway. I will forever be grateful for her help, and now for her friendship. 24. How did the author feel when she ate a poor diet and had a sense of tiredness? A. Funny. B. Nervous. C. Ashamed. D. Proud. 25. The author fought with Coach Smith because ______. . A. she refused to go on a diet B. she caused failure of her team C. she kept her idea of losing weight D. she changed the training course 26. Why did the author write a letter to Coach Smith? A. She felt sorry for eating too little food. B. She was grateful for Smith’s care for her health. C. She decided to improve her performance. D. She wanted to build a close relationship with Smith. 27. What is the best title for the text? A. Unexpected Friendship B. A Fight with My Coach C. A Strict Volleyball Coach D. My Way of Losing Weight C There has long been a belief that money buys happiness. However, “although we really, really tried that for a couple of generations, it didn’t work,” said Francine Jay, author of The Joy of Less, A Minimalist Living Guide: How to Declutter, Organize, and Simplify Your Life. Thanks to a travel-inspired revelation (启发), Jay has been happily living a simpler life for 12 years. “I always packed as lightly as possible, and found it exciting to get by with just a small carry-on bag,” she told CNN. “I thought if it feels this great to travel lightly, how amazing would it be to live this way?I wanted to have that same feeling of freedom in my everyday life.” Jay decided to get rid of all her extra possessions and live with just the essentials. “I wanted to spend my time and energy on experiences, rather than things.” Jay is a follower of a movement called “minimalism (极简主义)”. Growing numbers of people have been attracted to this lifestyle all over the world. They share the same feeling of disappointment with modern life and a desire to live more simply. Minimalists are typically progressive and concerned about the environment, Leah Watkins, a lead researcher at Otago University in New Zealand, told Stuff magazine in March. But many simply experienced unhappiness caused by owning too many possessions. Depression with the materialism of our world isn’t new. English romantic poet William Wordsworth summed up how depressing this was back in 1802, at the beginning of the industrial age, when he wrote: “Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers”. His preference was to go back to nature. Closer to our own times, the hippies (嬉皮士) of the 1960s also sought to “drop out” of modern life. And for many minimalists, their key is to unload. “Without objects, they believe people are forced more and more into the present moment and that’s where life happens,” wrote Stuff. But does simplicity ever feel like a sacrifice? “It’s eliminating the excess — unused items, unnecessary purchases — from your life. Well, I may have fewer possessions, but I have more space … Minimalism is making room for what matters most,” said Jay. And “the real questions”, according to Duane Elgin, US social scientist, are “what do you care about?” and “what do you value?” He told CNN: “It’s important for people to realize minimalism isn’t simply the amount of stuff we consume. It’s about our families, our work, our connection with the larger world, our spiritual dimension. It’s about how we touch the whole world. It’s a way of life.” 28. What inspired Francine Jay to live a simple life? A. A book she came across. B. Her desire to keep up with modern life. C. The pleasure she enjoyed from traveling lightly. D. A follower of minimalism she met on a trip. 29. According to this passage, a minimalist tends to ______. a. be fed up with materialism b. like visiting nature c. be angry about his or her current life d. be environmentally friendly and live with fewer things A. a, b B. a, b, d C. a, b, c D. b, c, d 30. The underlined word “eliminating” in Paragraph 8 probably means ______. A. increasing B. removing C. accepting D. improving 31. Which of the following would Duane Elgin probably agree with? A. Minimalism is a healthy lifestyle that is in conflict with modern life. B. Minimalism limits people’s freedom to enjoy their lives to the fullest. C. Minimalism enables people to reflect on what truly counts in their lives. D. Minimalism means people have to sacrifice some pleasure to live simply. D Measles (麻疹), which once killed 450 children each year and disabled even more, was nearly wiped out in the United States 14 years ago by the universal use of the MMR vaccine (疫苗). But the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly. Already this year, 115 measles cases have been reported in the USA, compared with 189 for all of last year. The numbers might sound small, but they are the leading edge of a dangerous trend. When vaccination rates are very high, as they still are in the nation as a whole, everyone is protected. This is called “herd immunity”, which protects the people who get hurt easily, including those who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons, babies too young to get vaccinated and people on whom the vaccine doesn’t work. But herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins in. When some refuse vaccination and seek a free ride, immunity breaks down and everyone is in even bigger danger. That’s exactly what is happening in small neighborhoods around the country from Orange County, California, where 22 measles cases were reported this month, to Brooklyn, N.Y., where a 17-year-old caused an outbreak last year. The resistance to vaccine has continued for decades, and it is driven by a real but very small risk. Those who refuse to take that risk selfishly make others suffer. Making things worse are state laws that make it too easy to opt out (决定不参加) of what are supposed to be required vaccines for all children entering kindergarten. Seventeen states allow parents to get an exemption (豁免), sometimes just by signing a paper saying they personally object to a vaccine. Now, several states are moving to tighten laws by adding new regulations for opting out. But no one does enough to limit exemptions. Parents ought to be able to opt out only for limited medical or religious reasons. But personal opinions? Not good enough. Everyone enjoys the life-saving benefits vaccines provide, but they’ll exist only as long as everyone shares in the risks. 32. The first two paragraphs suggest that ______. A. a small number of measles cases can start a dangerous trend B. the outbreak of measles attracts the public attention C. anti-vaccine movement has its medical reasons D. information about measles spreads quickly 33. Herd immunity works well when ______. A. exemptions are allowed B. several vaccines are used together C. the whole neighborhood is involved in D. new regulations are added to the state laws 34. What is the main reason for the comeback of measles? A. The overuse of vaccine. B. The vaccine opt-outs of some people. C. The features of measles itself. D. The lack of medical care. 35. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To introduce the idea of exemption. B. To discuss methods to cure measles. C. To appeal for equal rights in medical treatment. D. To stress the importance of vaccination. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项有两项为多余选项。 36 It is a new term in today’s tourism industry. But in an age of growing environmental awareness, it is not too difficult for us to imagine and understand this new form of holiday. Ecotourism, which is considered as a kind of responsible tourism, is typically defined as travel to places where special and unusual plants, animals and cultural heritages are the main attractions. 37 Therefore, some natural and cultural spots also form a part of ecotourism. Ecotourism is developing at great speed. According to a recent report by the World Tourism Organization, ecotourism in recent years has enjoyed an annual growth of about 5% worldwide. 38 They included bird watching, hiking, diving, photography and taking part in various kinds of local cultural events. 39 However, it looks like some smaller towns and country areas may well become the new destinations for people to visit tomorrow because they are rich in ecological, cultural and historical resources. Ecotourism has been gaining increasing recognition and popularity mainly for the relaxing, natural and vivid experience it offers to tourists. People are attracted to nature and long to be close to it. However, a conflict between nature and human beings is unavoidable. 40 A. The definition of ecotourism is beyond words. B. It takes ecology and culture into consideration. C. You may not be very familiar with “ecotourism”. D. More than 80 activities have been listed for ecotourism. E. People can have great fun enjoying nature through ecotourism. F. Big cities are still the major places that attract tourists in our society today. G. How to protect natural resources while taking advantage of them is of great importance. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共三节,满分55分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Just before Christmas, my daughter Katie and I went over to my dad’s place to decorate. While we worked on the tree, grand babies Decie and Johnny 41 their great-grandfather Papa Cox. Their laughter and 42 arguments must have reminded Papa of the past days when my brother and I were just their 43 because I saw a twinkle in his 80-year-old eyes. Hanging the 44 decorations on Papa’s tree, I couldn’t help gently touching the very oldest of the glass balls, which were on the uppermost branches, safely out of 45 of tiny hands. When the tree was beautifully dressed and glowing, we bid my dad goodbye with lots of hugs and kisses and 46 for home. Later that night, in the quiet darkness, I pulled my 47 up close and lay down to rest and remember. The Christmas I turned 16, while decorating the tree with Mama, I 48 dropped and broke a decoration. The old glass ball was blue and its surface began to fall 49 ; it had been on our tree for as long as I could remember. 50 I bent to pick up the broken pieces and was surprised to find a tiny sheet of paper among the pieces. Unfolding it, I recognized my father’s penciled writing. Lifting my eyes, I saw my mother’s 51 expression. “Your daddy wrote that and 52 it in that blue ball during our first Christmas together, just before you were born,” she said with a smile. I wouldn’t have believed it 53 the proof there in my hands. The daddy I knew always looked upon getting the tree decorated as a chore he wanted 54 to do. In fact, sometimes he could be a bit of a lazy and mean man around the holidays! And yet this bit of 55 paper proved that long ago my daddy had done something apparently romantic at Christmas. Carefully laying the note aside, I cleaned up the broken pieces, wishing I could 56 restore the pieces. “It’s OK,” Mama said, encouraging me with a hug. “Just pick out another of the 57 ones and folded the note back inside.” 58 as we celebrate the holidays without Mama, who we lost to cancer, my 59 becomes more bitter. Each year as I decorate Papa’s tree, I relive the moment I shared with her that winter afternoon and tears of a sadness welled out. As I carefully handle those old decorations, I love knowing that one holds a 60 between Papa and Mama—one that was obvious to all who knew them. The note inside one of those old glass balls on Papa’s tree holds the heart of my parents’ marriage in three little words: “I love you.” 41. A. amazed B. entertained C. challenged D. confused 42.
