A I have raised dogs for many years. I’ve found out what they want and given it to them. When you get a new puppy, like a small baby, its personality is already somewhat established. It may be a “screamer” or a “cuddler (搂抱型)”or a quiet dog or an energetic dog. All puppies need sleep in massive (大量的) quantities. An energetic puppy will run around and suddenly fall down sound asleep. A quieter puppy will start to show signs of tiredness, then find a place to fall asleep. A “screamer” will scream for attention: Puppy cries and yelps, while a quiet puppy will usually give up and accept being put in a box. A “cuddler” will need your body, either your lap or next to you, to sleep soundly. Puppy language is very simple. It is like a baby’s cries. They cry when they are in need or in pain; in need of company, in need of food, in need of sleep, etc. As your dog grows, you should learn what they are saying to you, as they learn to take their cues(暗示) from you. If you rub your puppy’s stomach, and he likes it, he will learn to roll over and “ask” you for a stomach rub. Almost all dogs will “ask” to go out. In some cases, this consists of standing or jumping at a door. If you ignore this request, your dog will make it again, more firmly. 21.The underlined word “puppy” in Paragraph 2 most probably means a(n)________. A.young dog B.small baby C.old dog D.big child 22.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A.An energetic puppy is one that runs around and suddenly fall down sound asleep. B.A quiet puppy is one that shows signs of tiredness, then finds a place to fall asleep. C.A “screamer” is a puppy that cries and yelps. D.A “cuddler” will need a box to sleep in. 23.What does a dog mean by standing or jumping at a door? A.Hey, you. I’m needing a stomach rub. B.Hey, you. Get off my turf. C.Oh, boy, let me go out. D.Oh, boy, I’m so excited. 24.The author writes the passage in order to tell us ________. A.his experience of raising dogs B.how he likes to raise dogs C.something about a dog’s language and personality D.dogs are very clever B Many years ago my student asked me the question, "Mrs. Kindred, why do you teach?" Without taking time to reflect, I answered, "Because someday I might say something that might make a difference in someone's life." Even though I was honest, that wasn't a very good answer and my student didn't let it slide. "Let me get this straight," he said, "You went to college for four years so you could come here every day because you have the hope that someday you might say something that will influence someone?" He shook his head as if I were crazy and walked away looking confused. I'm one of those people who look back and wish they had said something smart or witty, or swift. Even though that particular student might no longer wonder why I teach, there are days when I wonder. On those days, I remind myself of the real reasons I teach: It's in my blood. My mother was my most influential teacher, and she was a 6th grade reading teacher until her death in 1990. She instilled(逐渐灌输) in me a love of reading and the knowledge that education opens doors. Teaching is a way to make a difference. If you throw a stone in a pond the ripples go on and on until they reach the shore. You can't have ripples without a "stone." Good teachers throw stones that make a positive difference, and that's what I strive to do. I genuinely love teenagers. I want to share with others what I know and what I have learned through the years. Life is full of ups and downs, and if I can help students avoid some potholes on the road of life, I want to do so. If they'll allow me to celebrate their victories with them, I want to do too. Teaching isn't for everyone, but I know I made the right career choice. 25. Why did the student continue to ask the question about the writer’s being a teacher? A. Because he thought her answer was unbelievable. B. Because the writer was insincere. C. Because the student was naughty. D. Because the answer was difficult to understand. 26. What do you think of the writer? A. Stupid. B. Honest. C. Conservative. D. Polite. 27. According to the text, which of the following is NOT true? A. The writer’s mother has the greatest influence on her. B. The writer’s answer made the student confused. C. In the writer’s opinion, some people in the world are unfit to teach. D. The writer annoyed the student who asked the question. 28. What’s the main idea of the text? A. A student’s silly question. B. A good teacher who likes students. C. The reason why I teach. D. A confused student. C A year ago August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift—$7,000, a legacy (遗产) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were going under financially,” says Dave. But the Fusses weren't the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive the unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches' generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in others, it was more than $ 100,000. It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $ 3 million—they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm. Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They liked comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase (购买). Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn't afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything” says their friend Sandy Van Weelden. “They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.” Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches' had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches' wish that their legacy—a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents—should enrich the whole community and last for generations to come. Neighbors helping neighbors—that was Ish and Arlene Hatch's story. 29.According to the text, the Fusses ________. A.were employed by a truck company B.were in financial difficulty C.worked in a school cafeteria D.lost their home 30.Which of the following is true of the Hatches? A.They had their children during the Great Depression. B.They left the family farm to live in an old house. C.They gave away their possessions to their neighbors. D.They helped their neighbors to find jobs. 31.Why would the Hatches routinely go from store to store? A.They decided to open a store. B.They wanted to save money. C.They couldn't afford expensive things. D.They wanted to buy gifts for local kids. 32.What can we learn from the text? A.The community of Alto was poor. B.The summer camp was attractive to the parents. C.Sandy Van Weelden got a legacy from the Hatches. D.The Hatches would like the neighbors to follow their example. D Canadian short story writer Alice Munro won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Eighty-two-year-old Munro is only the 13th woman to win the 112-year-old prize. Munro didn’t publish her first collection of short stories until she was 37 years old, but her stories have always been well-received. Lots of her stories share similar themes and characters, but each story has its own twists and turns. Even though she’s won Canada’s most famous literary award, the Giller Prize twice, winning the Nobel Prize for Literature is the peak of Munro’s career. “It brings her incredible recognition (认可), both of her and her career, and of the dedication (奉献) to the short story,” said one person. Along with the well-respected title comes 1.3 million dollars. Munro said everything was “so surprising and wonderful” and that she was “dazed by all the attention and affection that has been coming my way.” Munro knew she was in the list——she was named the second-most likely person to win this year’s prize, after Haruki Murakami (村上春树)of Japan——but she never thought that she would win. Munro’s win also represents the long way Canadian writers have come. “When I began writing there was a very small community of Canadian writers and little attention was paid by the world. Now Canadian writers are read, admired and respected around the globe,” Munro said on Thursday. She is technically not the first Canadian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, but many like to think that she is. In 1976 Saul Bellow, who was born in Quebec but moved to Chicago when he was still a child, won the prize. Even though he was born in Canada, he is mostly considered to be an American writer. “This is a win for us all. Canadians, by our very nature, are not very nationalistic,” said Geoffrey Taylor. “But things like this suddenly make you want to find a flag.” She wasn’t sure if she would keep writing if she won the prize, saying that it would be “nice to be successful. But this may change my mind.” 33. For Munro, the Nobel Prize is a prize for______. A. her love for Canadian culture B. her contribution to the short story C. her special form of writing D. her career of editing short stories 34. What can you infer from the sixth paragraph? A. Canadian writers have long been ignored. B. Canadian writers were respected across the globe. C. Canadian writers paid little attention to the prize. D. Canadians come a long way to win the prize. 35. What does the passage mainly tell us? A. How Alice Munro wins the Nobel Prize B. An introduction to the Nobel Prize in Literature C.
