It was finally reintroduced at the 1924 Amsterdam Games, and again burned in 1932. Carl Diem, chairman of the organizing committee for the 1936 Berlin Games, proposed that the flame be lit in Greece and transported to Berlin via a torch relay. The idea was accepted, and continued at every Olympic Games since 1952. The flame is lit at the ancient site of Olympia by the natural rays of the sun reflected off a curved mirror. It is lit at a ceremony by women dressed in robes resembling those worn in ancient times, who then pass it to the first relay runner. Olympic motto “Citius, altius, fortius”is a Latin phrase meaning“swifter, higher, stronger”,which Baron de Coubertin borrowed from Father Henri Martin Dideon of Paris. Dideon was headmaster of Arcueil College, and used the phrase to describe the athletic achievements of students at the school. He had previously been at the Albert Le Grand school, where the Latin words were carved in stone above the main entrance. Olympic oath “In the name of all competitors,I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules that govern them...in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams.” Written by Baron de Coubertin, the oath is taken by an athlete from the host nation while holding a corner of the Olympic flag. The athletes' oath was first taken by Belgian fencer Victor Boin at the 1920 Antwerp Games. A judge from the host country also speaks the oath with slightly different wording. 21.The Olympic flame was first burned at ________ in modern times. A.the 1920 Games B.the 1924 Games C.the 1932 Games D.the 1936 Games 22.From the passage we can learn ________. A.the first torch relay was held at the 1936 Berlin Games B.before 1936,no flames burned at the Olympic Games C.Carl Diem proposed that flames should burn at the Olympic Games D.the Olympic torch has burned since 1924 23.The Olympic motto was ________. A.written by Baron de Coubertin B.from Greek C.from the ancient Olympic Games D.borrowed from Father Henri Martin Dideon of Paris B Let's face it. No one drinks diet(饮食)soda(苏打) for the taste. People drink diet soda in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it. Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist(腰) size increases that were six times greater than those of people who didn't drink diet soda.“What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain,” said Sharon Fowler. The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years. While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations. Nutrition(营养) expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched(改变) from regular to diet soda, they don't lose weight at all.“We weren't seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us,” said Rogers. So why would diet soda cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet, but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet soda, and so overcompensate (补偿)for the missing calories(卡路里热量单位). A related study found some sweeteners (甜味剂) raised blood sugar levels in some mice.” Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial(人造的) sweeteners may be risky,” said study researcher Helen P·Hazuda, professor at the University of Texas's school of medicine. They may be free of calories, but not of consequences. 24.People drink diet soda to ________. A.stay in fashion B.enjoy its taste C.gain more energy D.achieve weight loss 25.The new study suggests that drinking diet soda______. A.helps people to be healthier B.causes people to become heavier C.offers people more calories D.makes people much thinner 26.We can learn from the passage that ________. A.diet soda drinkers tend to eat more food B.regular soda makes people lose more weight C.most blood diseases come from diet soda D.diet soda does help reduce calories 27.Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A.Diet soda is good for your health B.Diet soda may cause overweight C.Sweeteners can raise blood sugar levels D.A research about nutrition C As I travel across China, I hope to learn as much as I can about the Chinese people, your history, and your dreams for the future and I hope to help the Chinese people understand more of America’s history, the lessons the American people have drawn from it, and the dreams we hold for the 21st century. I believe both Chinese and Americans aspire(立志, 有热望) to many of the same things — to provide for our families, to teach our children, to build our communities, to protect our Earth, to shape our own futures, and pass brighter possibilities on to our children. There may be those here and back in America who wonder whether closer ties and deeper friendship between America and China are good. Clearly, the answer is yes. We have a powerful ability to help each other grow. We can learn much from each other. And as two great nations, we have a special responsibility to the future of the world. The steps we take over the next week can lead to far greater strides for our people in the years ahead. Here in this city of your magnificent history, we must always remember that we, too, are ancestors(祖先). Someday our children and their children will ask if we did all we could to build just societies and a more peaceful world. Let our monument be their judgment that we did that. Let our progress include all people, with all their differences, moving toward a common destiny. Let us give new meanings to the words written in the ancient Book of Rites, what you call the Li Shi: When the great way is followed, all under heaven will be equal. 28. It becomes clear from the passage that _______. A. both China and America are the most powerful countries in the world B. both China and America should do something for the future of the world C. both China and America are great countries with a long history D. both China and America can provide their children with good education 29. Which of the following statements is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. America will encourage their children to learn the Chinese history. B. The speaker is in the city with the magnificent Chinese history. C. Both Chinese and Americans share some desires and interests. D. The speaker wants Chinese to understand more of American history. 30. The underlined word “here” used in Paragraph 3 refers to “_______”. A. in the city B. on the platform C. at the ceremony D. in China 31. It can be inferred that the person who made the speech is a _______. A. scientist B. politician C. businessman D. professor D Your action can speak louder than your words. It is important to know another language and how to communicate without words when you are in another country. Before saying anything, people communicate with each other by using gestures(手势). However, many gestures have different meanings, or no meaning at all, in different parts of the world. In the United States, nodding your head up and down means “yes”, while in some parts of Greece and Turkey, it means “no”. In the southeast of Asia, it is a polite way of saying “I heard you”. Today in the USA, when someone puts his thumb(大拇指) up, it means “Everything is all right.” However, in Greece it is bad manners to do so. Also putting your clasped(紧握的)hands up above your head means “I am the winner.” It is the sign which players often make. In Russia it is the sign of friendship. In the USA, holding your hand up with the thumb and index finger(食指)in a circle, and the other three straight means “Everything is OK.” In France, it means “You are worth nothing.” It is also important to make eye communication. If you look down when talking to an American, he or she may feel that you are shy, or you are trying to hide something. Besides these, you should also know there are some topics that can not be talked about, such as age, weight and marriage. You can talk about the weather, work, sports, food, where one lives and news of the day. 32. Which of the following is true? A. People all over the world only communicate by words. B. Many gestures either have different meanings or no meanings at all. C. Gestures are the most common way to communicate. D. People can talk about anything in another country. 33. What does the sentence “Your action can speak louder than your words” in paragraph 1 mean? A. What you do is better than what you say. B. You try your best to be polite. C. You are better understood by your gestures than through your words. D. What you say is better than what you do. 34. You’d better not put the thumb up in _____. A. Greece B. the USA C. England D. China 35. The main idea of the passage is that when you are in another country, _____. A. it is important to know the language. B. it is important to know what you talk about to a foreigner. C. to know how to communicate without words is as important as to know the language.
