B It is commonly believed that the earliest Chinese paper-cuts appeared during the sixth century. Some scholars believe it was even earlier. Legend has it that during the Western Han Dynasty (206BC - AD24), Emperor Wudi was very sad after one of his favorite concubines ( 妃子), Madame Li, died. A Taoist priest, Li Shaoweng, cut a piece of hemp paper in the shape of Madame Li. When evening fell, the emperor’s servants lit candles in his bedroom; the reflection of that paper-cut on the wall made the emperor think about his beloved concubine. The Yuxian paper-cut is different from most paper-cuts produced in other regions of China. Paper-cuts from other regions are mostly cut with scissors or knives from single-colored paper, such as red or black paper. There are four major procedures to make the Yuxian paper-cut: First, sketch the pattern on the draft paper; second, fasten the draft to the paper to be cut; third, use a knife to carve out the pattern; and fourth, dye ( 染色) the paper-cut with various colors. Precise cutting skills are needed to make a piece of the Yuxian paper-cut, which highlights the craft maker’s artistic taste and dyeing skills. That explains the following saying: “The successful making of a Yuxian paper-cut is 30 percent dependent on the maker’s cutting skills, and 70 percent on the maker’s dyeing skills.” The traditional Yuxian paper-cut highlights two themes: flowers and characters in Chinese operas. The paper-cut is particularly known for its vivid description of characters in various traditional Chinese operas. In October 2009, the art of Yuxian’s paper-cut was added to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage established by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization). 24. At a clothes swap event the women can give away unwanted clothing and get something different in return. Recently about 300 women went to a clothes swap at a high school in Springfield, Virginia. It was the largest crowd ever for the area’s popular clothing-swapping group. Daphne Steinberg was having a good day. “For anyone who knows Ann Taylor LOFT, Ann Taylor is a really good women’s designer and I will totally wear this to work. So I love that, and I love that I can equip myself for work, have a good time in doing it, and not totally bankrupt (使破产) myself.” Sandy Van Dusen likes the idea that clothes are finding new homes instead of being thrown away. “Because it helps to keep the Earth green. There’s no point in my opinion in continuing to buy new clothes when we can reuse what are already here. Give them a new home-let somebody else love what you used to love and no longer love.” Kim Pratt organized the clothes swap event in Springfield. She also organized a money-raising activity for the high school’s debate team. It is one of several ways that her group gives to charitable causes. Another is by donating all of the “unswapped” clothing to shelters for victims of domestic violence. “I started doing this four years ago, and we’ve been doing it for four years, getting bigger and bigger each time we have a swap.” She used the social media website meetup.com to help publicize the events. The website has helped her group grow from 30 members to 1,300. Ms. Pratt says most of the members respect the clothing swap rules. But she says competition for desirable fashion can be strong. “We have to tell people sometimes not to hover over the new people coming in with their clothing. As they put it out, some people tend to grab the clothes right out of their hands and it becomes like a free-for-all. We try to avoid that as much as possible.” 28.What does the word “Clothes-swapping” in Paragraph1 probably mean? Eat when you’re hungry and sleep when you’re tired. What do you think will happen? You may be surprised to find that your day is much like most other days. You’ll probably get hungry when you normally eat and tired when you normally sleep. Even though you don’t know what time it is, your body does. These patterns of daily life are called circadian rhythms (生理节奏), and they are more than just habits. Inside our bodies are several clock like systems that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle. Throughout the day and night, our inner clocks direct changes in temperature, body chemicals, hunger, sleepiness and more. Everyone’s rhythms are different, which is why you might like to stay up late while your sister always wants to go to bed early. But on the whole, everyone is programmed to feel tired at night and energetic during the day. Learning about our body clocks may help scientists understand why problems arise when we act out of step with our circadian rhythms. For example, traveling across time zones can make people wake up in the middle of the night. Regularly staying up late can make kids do worse in tests. “There is a growing sense that when we eat and when we sleep are important parts of how healthy we are,” says Steven Shea, director of the Sleep Disorders Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. One way to learn about how our body clocks tick is to mess them up and see what happens. That’s what neurologist (神经病学家) Frank Scheer and his workmates did in a recent study. Staying up night after night, their studies suggest, could make kids extra hungry and more likely to gain weight. And regularly sleeping too little, Scheer says, may be one cause of the recent increase in childhood obesity. 32. What will happen if you forget about the clock according to the passage? A. You will feel upset. B. You will behave normally. C. You will probably get hungry more easily. D. Your body will not know what time it is. 33. Mike feels energetic at 12 midnight while Tom feels sleepy. What advice would be given by the writer? A. Both should take it easy. B. Both should see a doctor. C. Tom should see a doctor. D. Mike should have a watch. 34. How do Frank Scheer and his workmates study body clocks? A. By seeing what happens when they are messed up. B. By asking questions and collecting answers. C. By studying people traveling across time zones. D. By programming people with man-made clocks. 35. What will the writer most probably talk about NEXT? A. Some effective medicines that can keep people from putting on weight. B.The importance of eating healthy food. C. Other examples of what people will do when their body clocks go wrong. D.
