Perhaps Leonardo da Vinci springs to mind. Or the pioneer of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell. But you might be hard-pressed to name many female inventors, even though women are behind some of the most widely used technologies in the modern world. For example, where would we be without the windscreen wiper? Back on a freezing winter’s day in 1902, Mary Anderson was traveling by tram through New York city. Snow was falling, forcing the driver to stop repeatedly and get out to clear it. Each time the door opened, Mary suffered. She had a brainwave: why not make something that could be operated from inside the vehicle? And that’s exactly what she did. Let’s step in from freezing New York for our next invention. The dishwasher dates back even earlier to the 19th Century, and to the dinner parties thrown by a lady called Josephine Cochrane. As a frequent host, she wanted a machine that could wash dishes faster than people. Her response was to develop what was to become the first commercially successful dishwasher. Need something to do while the dishwasher is on? How about a round of Monopoly(强手棋游戏)? One of the most popular board games around, the rules were first drawn up by a lady called Elizabeth Magie, and patented in 1904. To an altogether different kind of innovation: Kevlar is the lightweight fibre used in bulletproof(防弹)vests. The material is used by millions every day and has saved countless lives and its strength-lo-weight ratio is five times higher than steel. Finally, one of the most important inventions of the 20th Century must surely be the computer programme. The world of programming is unbalanced among men and women, with men taking home around 30% more pay than their female partners on average. But back in the 1940s and 50s, women were at the forefront of this new field and Grace Hopper was one of them. 24. What do we know about the inventions mentioned in the text? A. They were mostly made in the 20th century. B. They all used high technology. C. Their inventors came from families of good education. D. They were all made by accident. 25. Why did Mary Anderson invent windscreen wiper? A. The winter was extremely cold there. B. She was forced to clear the snow by others. C. The car she drove made her suffer a great deal. D. She was sick of the driver getting out to clear the window. 26. Which of the following statements is WRONG according to the text? A. Josephine Cochrane wanted a machine that operated automatically. B. Kevlar is the super tough fibre and stronger than steel. C. The game invented by Magie was popular merely among teenagers. D. Grace Hopper was good at computer programming. 27. What is the best title of this passage? A. Women can be Great Inventors B. The Most Useful Inventions by Women C. The Most Widely Used Technologies D. Women Made Greater Contributions than Men C Many people have influence on my life, based on their personal characteristics, achievements, and values. I have been lucky to have had a great many teachers and professors who I respect for their patience and intelligence. There are artists who have encouraged me by their talents and creativity. I value many political leaders, who have inspired me by their contributions to society, and their ability to change our futures. But of all the people I have known in my life, the person I admire most is my father. As the youngest girl in my family, I always considered myself to be “Daddy’s little girl”. While I grew up, it always made me sad to see so many of my friends and neighbors without a father or father-like figure around. This helped me appreciate how my father always takes an interest in his children’s lives. In every aspect of my life, my father continuously pushes me to excel, so I could finish my work excellently among my people. Whenever I feel like giving up, or have a question or a concern, I know I can always turn to him for advice. From him I have also learned that sometimes you have to put others’ needs ahead of your own, but don’t make yourself made use of by others. His strength seems to be unbreakable during hard times, and he is extremely determined to do anything he sets his mind on, no matter how small it is. I highly respect him for how he stands up for what he believes in, and will never back down. I have always admired his open mind, sympathy for people, and sense of understanding. He is a very strict man, but in our daily life, he has a great sense of humor, and always knows how to put a smile on the faces of his wife, his children and his friends. Living in his love and instruction, I am very proud of my father. He also professes how proud he is of his children, and is still there to support us in whatever we are doing in. 28.Which of the following could NOT be used to describe the author’s father? A. A. be cleverer than others. B. show off. C. do better than others. D. keep healthy 30.According to the underlined sentence, the father was telling the author to ____. A. think about others and help them, but not to be used in a bad way B. try to take advantage of those who were friendly to her C. think about others and help them, so that she could make them serve her D. try to be good to those who were worth making friends with 31.What can we infer about the author? A. She appreciated her father because he could solve all the problems. B. She considered her father strict and had no smile to her. C. She was outstanding because her father forced her to do so. D. She felt pity for those children without the father. D The way people walk can provide clues about their personality, claims a new study carried out by researchers at the University of Portsmouth. Using motion capture technology, researchers found that movements of both the upper and lower body reveal certain personalities, such as aggression, agreeableness and outgoingness. The technology is widely used to record the movements of an actor, which are then translated to an animated character on screen. Lead researcher Liam Satchell said," When one is walking, the body naturally swings(摇摆)a little. An aggressive walk is one where this rotation is exaggerated. The study also found that personalities that help with social skills - such as agreeableness and outgoingness - were particularly evident in people with increased pelvis(骨盆) movement alone. “While little swagger(大摇大摆)and little sway in a walk could indicate a person of great creativity,” MrSatchell told Mail Online. The study assessed the personalities of 29 participants using a standard personality test. Participants were also asked to complete a questionnaire that measured their levels of aggression. Motion capture technology was then used to record how they walked on a running machine at their natural speed. While people may be aware that there is a relationship between swagger and psychology, this is the first research to provide evidence based on experiments. "We know of no other examples of research where the walk has been shown to have close connection with self-reported measures of personalities and suggest that more research should be conducted between automatic movements and personality. If CCTV observers could be trained to recognize the aggressive walk shown in this research, their ability to recognize crimes likely to happen very soon could be improved further " said Mr Satchell. 32. What can we know about “motion capture technology”? A. It is specially intended for fast-moving objects. B. It helps to improve actor’s acting techniques. C. It has been widely used in the field of film. D. It is a kind of exaggerated shooting skill. 33. People who walk with less overall movements tend to be _______. A. aggressive B. creative C. shy D. honest 34. What do Mr Satchelll’s words in Paragraph 4 suggest? A. There’s a long way to carry out such studies. B. The findings will be mainly used to prevent crimes. C. The research result has been put into practice. D. There’s no relation between aggression and walk. 35. What is the suitable title for the passage? A. What is your personality type? B. A new way of recognizing crimes C. How to read a person’s intention D.
