B Americans like to visit the national parks. In 1996, over 250,000,000 people visited areas which are managed by the National Park Service. Experts say that by 2012, 500,000,000 people per year will visit the parks. As a result, people are trying to think of ways to protect the parks from the crowds. The crowding of the parks has caused several problems. One is that there is not enough space for all of the people who want to use the parks. To deal with this problem, you may have to book your tickets a few months ahead of time. The Park Service may also raise entrance fees (费) . Another problem caused by increased park use is pollution. Some garbage and waste can be cleaned up, and the cleanup can be paid for by increased entrance fees. To cut down on noise pollution and air pollution, the number of cars allowed in parks may be limited. If this happens, people may use buses to travel around the parks. Officials may also limit the use of jet-skis, snow- mobiles, motor-boats, and sightseeing helicopters and planes. The parks may also be in danger because of development that is going on around them. For example, around Yellow Stone Park, many hotels, golf courses, resorts, and other tourist attractions have been built. Some of these developments have effect on areas that are used by animals. People will have to learn to agree about ways to protect the parks. If they do not, there will soon be no reason to visit these national treasures. 24. C You may think that English dictionaries have been used for many, many centuries. The spelling of English has always been a problem but it was more of a problem in the days before a dictionary. Then people could spell words in different ways which you might find interesting. But it made reading English much more difficult. So dictionaries were invented to encourage everybody to spell the same. In fact, an English dictionary like the kind you use today wasn’t made until the time of the late Qing Dynasty. Three men did most of the important early work on dictionaries: Samuel Johnson, Noah Webster, and James Murray. These men spent nearly all of their lives trying to collect words for their dictionaries. For them, it wasn’t only a job; it was a wonderful journey of discovery. The largest dictionary in the world is the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED for short. The idea for this dictionary came from an important meeting in Britain in 1857. Twenty-two years later, Oxford University asked James Murray to be the editor of its new dictionary. Murray had never been to college. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and taught himself while working in a bank. Later he became a great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a place built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one metre underground. In winter it felt like a barn, he had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five o’clock and worked several hours before breakfast. Often he would work by candle light into the evening. Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Then others went to work with Murray, including his two daughters. He worked on the dictionary until he was very old. Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished it. It included more than 15,000 words in twelve books. And you thought your English dictionary was big! 28. Which of the following is TRUE according to the reading? A. People didn’t know how to spell words in the days before a dictionary. B. Samuel Johnson, Noah Webster, and James Murray did all the work on dictionaries. C. Collecting words for the dictionary is an easy job. D. Oxford University decided to edit its new dictionary in 1879. 29. It took Murry _______ years to complete the letter A. A. five B. less than five C. more than five D. ten 30. We can infer ______________ from the last paragraph. A. James Murry taught himself while working. B. The Oxford English was finished in ten years. C. When the Oxford English Dictionary was finished, Murray had passed away. D. Murry’s daughters helped him to complete the dictionary. 31. What can we learn from the text? A. English dictionaries have been used for many, many centuries. B. People spelled the words in the same way before an English dictionary was made. C. The largest dictionary in the world is the most popular one. D. An English dictionary like the kind we use today wasn’t made until the time of the late Qing Dynasty. D My aunt Cindy has her own cake shop. She can make nice cakes for special occasions, such as weddings. I spent a week last summer helping her in the shop. Making a nice cake is harder than I thought it would be. I practised for hours in Aunt Cindy's shop. I made little colored dots (圆点) on a piece of wax paper (蜡纸). Unluckily, I could not get the dots to be the same shape or size. I decided to take a break from making the dots, so I helped move cakes. However, that was not easy for me, either. I dropped a cake when trying to take it out of the freezer (冰箱) by myself. Luckily one of Aunt Cindy's assistants (助手) was there. He saved the cake from hitting the floor. It takes a whole team to make a huge cake. That's one of the most important things I learned. Each person on the team has to be great at his or her job. Aunt Cindy designs the cakes on paper, Larry does the mixing and baking, and assistants carve and put frosting on the cakes. Aunt Cindy and Larry do most of the decorating while the assistants help make small parts like flowers and figures. Building a big cake is like playing a team sport. If one person doesn't do his or her job well, the whole team pays for that. Even though I was not much help to my aunt, I'm glad I spent the week in Aunt Cindy’s shop. Designing cakes takes more than just baking skills. It takes art and painting skills too. Now when I see a really nice cake, I don't think of eating it first. Instead, I look at it and wonder how many hours it took to make. 32.What does the underlined word "occasions" mean in this passage? A.events B.needs C.months D.ideas 33. Why did the writer take a break from putting colored dots on wax paper? A.Because she practised for hours and became bored. B.Because she could not make the dots good enough for a cake. C.Because Aunt Cindy did not want her to make any more dots. D.Because Aunt Cindy wanted her to help somewhere else. 34. Who designs the cakes on paper? A.Aunt Cindy. B.Larry. C.Assistants D.The writer. 35. What was the main reason the writer was glad to have spent a week in her aunt's shop? A.She got to practise making coloured dots. B.She learned the importance of teamwork. C.She got to take a cake out of the freezer. D.She learned art and painting skills. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We’ve all heard “Never judge a book by its cover”, but that’s exactly what this activity asks your children to do. It’s not all it will ask, though. It makes them interested with a little guess work, and then gets them to read the book to see if their predictions are right. ____36______It’s about getting them involved in the reading experience. When your kids take the time to use the information they get from the cover and title, they’ve taken the first step to dive into the book. __37___ First, encourage your child to choose a book and examine the cover. Ask your child to tell you his or her predictions on what the book is about, then have your child write down the predictions on a piece of paper. ____38__ Once the book is read, you and your child can look at the paper to check or correct the predictions. Then, have your child discuss the plot(情节) with you, and summarize(总结) what the book was really about. If your child is writing on his or her own, let him or her write a brief summary of the book. 39 At the same time, let him or her draw a picture on the back of the book. When your children take time to predict, discuss, summarize, and even draw pictures about what they’ve read, it builds their reading skills. 40 Share your experiences on the Scholastic Parents Facebook page! A. Your child’s next step is reading the book. B. It makes the reading a daily experience for your kids. C. Do your children really like the book that they read? D. If not, have your child dictate(口述) summary to you. E. Here’s how you can help your child complete this activity. F. Do you have any tips to help your children remember what they read? G.
