B American professional athlete Colin O’Brady and British Army Captain Louis Rudd set off on November 3, 2018, from the Atlantic coast with the aim of becoming the first person to ski across Antarctica alone, unsupported, and unassisted. O’Brady was the first to arrive at the Ross Ice Shelf on the Pacific coast by way of the South Pole on December 26, 2018. He spent 54 days skiing the world’s windiest and coldest continent while pulling a 300-pund sled (雪橇) with supplies. The achievement was particularly great given that shortly after graduating from college, O’Brady had an accident which left experts doubtful whether he would walk again, let alone ski across the continent. Instead of leaving the environment after completing the competition, the explorer put up a tent on the world’s largest ice sheet and waited patiently for Rudd. On December 29, the British explorer became the world’s second person to complete the solo (独自的) crossing of the frozen continent. Rudd was not disappointed at being second since he never considered it to be a “race.” He was doing it in honor of his friends Henry Worsley and Ben Saunders, who died while trying to cross the continent alone in 2016 and in 2017. Rudd said, “I didn’t want to win the race. All that mattered to me was that I completed it.” After spending a few days camping on the continent, the two adventurers were picked up by a ski plane to the South Pole scientific research station. From there, they boarded another plane that took them back to their homes. Though they live in different continents and come from different backgrounds, they will forever be tied together by their amazing achievement. 24. How did the two explorers cross Antarctica? A. On foot. B. By skiing C. By riding on a sled D. By flying a ski plane 25. How long did it take Louis Rudd to cross Antarctica? A. 33 days B. 51 days C. 54 days D. 57 days 26. Why did Louis Rudd decide to cross Antarctica? A. To compete with Colin O’ Brady. B. To challenge his physical ability. C. To be in memory of his friends. D. To rescue his friends. 27. We can infer from the passage that ________. A. O’ Brady had an accident before graduating from college B. O’ Brady waited for Louis Rudd after crossing Antarctica C. Louis Rudd was the second man to travel across the Antarctica D. the two adventurers were picked up by a plane directly they made the achievement C As we all know, polar bears have been listed as a threatened species due to climate change. The first formal count of polar bears in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska’s northwest coast shows they are doing better than some of their cousins elsewhere, with a population of nearly 3000. In the near term, it’ s absolutely good news. In the long term, it doesn’t mean the Chukchi sea bear population will not be affected. After all, polar bears need ice to hunt seals. However, there are some changes worldwide in the effects of sea ice loss on polar bears on which they spend most of their lives. Less sea ice means less time to hunt ice seals, more time on shore and longer, energy-consuming swims. The world’s polar bears are divided into 19 subpopulations (亚种群) , including two in the U.S. waters. Fewer young bears are surviving into their second year and adult males weigh less and have smaller skulls. The trends are consistent with changes in their nutrition which is connected with reductions in sea ice. Chukchi bears spend more time on shore and have almost 30 fewer days to hunt seals on ice than 20 years ago. However, that doesn’t appear to have affected the population. Polar bears have an amazing ability to build fat stores. And it’s clear that the Chukchi’s large seal population allows bears to make up for the loss of hunting time. When ice melts, many Chukchi bears rest on Russia’s Wrangell Island, where they sometimes can find a dead whale. With such good luck, they needn’t hunt for food for a longtime. 28. What is good news about the Chukchi Sea bears? A. They are in larger numbers. B. They are becoming healthier. C. Their habitat is in good condition. D. Their population number is increasing. 29. What plays a key role in polar bears’ lives? A. Human activities. B. Hunting time. C. Climate changes. D. Sea ice. 30. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. Changes in their body structure. B. A loss of sea ice. C. Less time to hunt seals on ice. D. More challenges from water. 31. From the passage, we can know that ________. A. polar bears prefer dead whales to seals B. climate change has affected the number of polar bears C. more young polar bears have smaller body weight for lack of nutrition D. the Chukchi polar bears are the first polar bears studied by the scientists D Fire ants’ tunnels got excavated (挖掘) efficiently by only a small percentage of the group doing most of the work, thus avoiding jams in narrow spaces. Freeloaders just sit around while their hard-working colleagues get things done, but might freeloaders actually be necessary for society to function efficiently? The answer could be yes ---- at least when it comes to fire ants and their efforts to excavate nests underground. “Fire ants are quite common in Georgia and they are highly social creatures,” Daniel Goldman, a physicist at Georgia Tech, said. So, Goldman and his colleagues wanted to know how individual ants knew what to do without a central leader giving orders. To find out, Goldman’s team labeled individual fire ants with paint and then watched them excavate their tunnels ---- just wide enough for two workers. It turned out that just 30 percent of the ants did 70 percent of the work.[来源:学科网] “I was surprised that so few workers actually did the work at any one time.” A quarter of the ants never even entered the tunnel. Others entered inside, but left without excavating a single grain of dirt. These behaviors made sure that the crowded tunnels were clear, which would make the construction process continue. And when the scientists removed the five hardest-working ants, others immediately jumped in with no reduction in the group’s productivity. It seems that it doesn’t matter which ants are working or freeloading at a given time, as long as there is some division of work to keep the tunnels flowing. Goldman’s team also modelled the ants’ nest-building on computers. And the most efficient excavation happened when the electronic ants behaved similarly to real ants. Imagine groups of robots sent to search for disaster survivors or nanobots (纳米机器人) coursing through our bodies to diagnose illness and provide targeted medical treatment. They will need to avoid getting jammed up in narrow spaces. It might be necessary to program them so some just sit back and watch others work. 32. How do fire ants excavate their nests underground? A. All individual fire ants work hard. B. They work according to a central leader’s order. C. The majority of the group does the excavation work. D. A small number of fire ants do most of the excavation work. 33. When the hardest-working ants were removed, ________ . A. other ants didn’t know what to do B. other ants entered and made tunnels crowded C. other ants replaced them right away D. the construction process stopped immediately 34. What does the author want to say in the last paragraph? A. Fire ants can be sent to search for disaster survivors. B. The study may help solve traffic problems. C. Fire ants can be used to cure illness. D. The study may help the development of robots. 35. What is the best title for the passage? A. Freeloading ants help the work-flow B. How do fire ants excavate tunnels? C. Fire ants are natural builders D. How do fire ants learn from each other? 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How will you respond when you feel hungry in your everyday life? Have your favorite meal and stay quiet after that? 36 But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about your friends or favorite stars. So it silently serves your needs and never lets itself grow. When mind loses its freedom to grow, creativity sets a full stop. This might be the reason why we all sometimes think “What will happen next?” or “Why can’t I think?”. 37 Why reading but not watching TV? This is nothing but creativity. 39 Within no time you can start talking with your friends in English or any other language and never run out of the right words. So, friends, do give food to your mind by reading, reading and more reading. 40 Go and get a book! A. The interesting part of the book is stored in your mind as a seed. B.
