After all, I was a teenage girl, and I couldn’t bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the roads. Coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to stop rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work. One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something. “I’m awfully sorry,” I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn’t stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to guess if the bus had arrived. Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help. But at this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass, or I thought I did. But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by. I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop. 24. The girl refused to ask for help because she thought_________. A. she might be recognized B. being found blind was embarrassing C. she was normal and independent D. asking for help looked silly 25. After the girl got off the bus that evening, she_________. A. began to run B. was caught by something C. hit a lamppost by accident D. hit a person as usual 26. What was the problem with guessing at the sound to stop a bus? A. Other vehicles also stopped there. B. It took too much time for the girl to catch the bus. C. More lorries than buses responded to the girl. D. It was unreliable for making judgments. 27. Finally the girl decided to walk to the next stop, hoping__________. A. to find people there B. to find more buses there C. to find the bus by herself there D. to find people more helpful there C Square dancing is a form of entertainment and physical exercise, which is a good thing. However, a group of senior Chinese ladies dancing in New York’s Sunset Park were recently faced with noise complaints from nearby residents. The local court even served a summons (传票) related to a certain Ms. Wang. The news soon caused heated discussion across China, with many believing the incident to involve a cultural conflict between the East and West, while others view it as a form of discrimination(歧视) against Chinese in the United States. The United States is a diverse society, and in many cases, Chinese dancers are tolerated and even appreciated. Meanwhile, the United States is a society based on the rule of law, and due to cultural differences, local regulations seem to be very different from those in China. As a result, some old Chinese ladies dancing in New York’s Sunset Park found themselves caught in an embarrassing situation. Locals and immigrants from other nations view such noise as a violation of their right to enjoy tranquility. Calling the police is regarded as the most efficient way to solve such a problem. Before, these ladies probably did not understand local customs and rules. However, since the incident took place, they should perhaps know a little better next time and keep the noise to a minimum. People from different nations are often supposed to reach compromises, respecting and tolerating each other. Whatever your choice of entertainment is, it is important not to affect other people’s lives. Square dancing is only one of many activities during which people should mind their behavior. As for U.S. police practice, there might still be some room for improvement. Some were said to be rather rude, leading to the so-called “racial discrimination,” which is a sensitive topic in U.S. society. If the involved parties could be more tolerant and solve such problems without involving the court, perhaps immigrants would mix more. 28. The writer mentions the incident in Paragraph 1 to __________. A. show his opinion B. introduce the topic C. make complaints D. criticize the local police 29. The underlined word “tranquility” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by ________. A. quietness B. entertainment C. freedom D. quality 30. What will the senior Chinese ladies most probably do after the incident? A. Go back to China. B. Fight for their right. C. Ask America to change its law. D. Keep the noise lower. 31. What’s the writer’s attitude towards senior Chinese ladies dancing in New York’s Sunset Park? A. He considers it a shame for senior Chinese ladies to do so. B. He strongly supports the action of the local police. C. He thinks all parties involved should be more tolerant. D. He suggests such kind of problem should be solved in the court. D People with an impulsive(冲动的) personality refer to those who tend to do things without considering the possible dangers or problems first. According to a new study by researchers at the University of Georgia, such people may be more likely to have food addiction. The study found that people exhibiting impulsive behavior weren’t necessarily overweight, but impulsiveness was related to a direct relationship with food, and therefore, less healthy weight. Food addiction has been compared to addictive drug use. Studies have linked the dopamine (多巴胺) release that occurs after tasting delicious food to the dopamine release that happens when people consume other addictive substances. Impulsive behavior involves several personality traits (特点). Two of these traits, known as negative urgency and lack of perseverance, were particularly associated with food addiction and high BMI (身体质量指数) during the study. Negative urgency is characterized by the tendency to behave impulsively when experiencing negative emotions. Some people might drink alcohol or take drugs. For others, it could mean eating to feel better. Lack of perseverance is when a person has a hard time finishing hard or boring tasks. People with a lack of perseverance might have difficulty attempting to change addictive eating behavior, which could also cause obesity. “Impulsiveness might be one reason why some people eat in an addictive way despite motivation to lose weight,” said Dr. Ashley Gearhardt, a clinical psychologist. He was involved in developing the Yale Food Addiction Scale in aid of those people. “We are theorizing that if food addiction is really a thing, then our measure, the Yale Food Addiction Scale, should be related to helping control impulsive action,” said Gearhardt. Clinical psychologist Dr. James MacKillop, whose lab was conducting the study, believes that therapies(治疗,疗法)used to treat addictive drug behavior could help people who suffer from addictive eating habits. “Most of the programs for weight loss at this point focus on the most obvious things, which are clearly diet and exercise,” MacKillop said. “It seems that managing strong desires to eat would naturally fit in with the skills a person would need to eat healthily.” 32. According to Paragraph 1, the result of food addiction is ________. A. taking alcohol or drugs B. motivation to lose weight C. negative emotions D. less healthy weight 33. How does the author introduce the two personality traits in Paragraph 4? A. By making comparisons and conclusions. B. By explaining causes and effects. C. By giving definitions and examples. D. By presenting questions and answers. 34. What can be inferred about the Yale Food Addiction Scale from the text? A. It has been successfully carried out among overweight people. B. It might help some impulsive people with food addiction to lose weight. C. It will prove whether food addiction is a problem to impulsive people. D. It is theoretically a proper treatment for addictive food and drug behavior. 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Impulsive personality linked to food addition B. Food addiction compared to drug use C. Dopamine release caused by food addiction D. Food addiction contributing to obesity 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Fight Laziness? Lazy people will never gain anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind. 36 . Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation(动力) once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day. Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more positive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. 37 . Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑) that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. 38 . Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film. Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. 39 . Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others at home may finally follow your example and perform their own tasks. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people. 40 . Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits. A. One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep. B. Knowing how to fight laziness is important. C. To fight family laziness, set an example. D. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child. E. Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life. F. Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness. G. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal. As the saying goes, roses given, fragrance in hand.
