A colleague said to me one time, “They don’t pay me to like the kids. They pay me to teach a lesson. That’s all.” Well , I said to her, “You know, kids don’t learn from people they don’t like. Your year is going to be long and boring, dear. ” I have had classes that were so low that I cried. I wondered, “how am I going to take this group in nine months from where they are to where they need to be?” And it was difficult. And so—I gave a quiz, 20 questions. A student missed 18. I put a“+2”on his paper and a big smiley face. He said; “Ms. Pierson, is this an F?”I said, “Because you got two right. You didn’t miss them all, And when we review this, won’t you do better?” He said, “Yes, madam, I can do better.” You see, “-18”sucks (抽取) all the life out of you, “+2”said, “I am not all bad. ” Can we stand to have more relationships? Of course not. And you know your toughest kids are never absent. Teaching and learning should bring joy. C Each year thousands of tourists visit the polar regions (极地地带) of the Arctic and Antarctica. These trips provide unforgettable experiences for people to experience nature in the polar regions. But the increasing number of tourists can have a serious effect on the regions. Should tourists be allowed to visit the polar regions? About 40,000 tourists visit Antarctica each year. More than five million travel to the Arctic and Subarctic. Transporting tourists to the regions increases ship and airplane traffic, and adds to the risk of pollution, oil spills, and other environmental damage. Because the places where plants and animals are accessible (可靠近的) are few in number, tourist traffic can become concentrated in specific areas, putting at risk Arctic vegetation (植物) . Activities such as boating, fishing, and skiing can also cause trouble to animals, according to GRID-Arendal, an organization working with the United Nations Environment Program. Antarctic New Zealand environment manager Neil Gilbert told the Associated Press in 2013 that increased monitoring is needed to measure the environmental influence of tourism in the polar regions. “We really don't know what additional influence tourism numbers are having on what is already a very rapidly changing environment,” he said. Others say that access to these very special parts of the world should not be restricted (限制) to only researchers and scientists. Polar tourism allows people to develop deep personal connections with the polar regions. “Those who travel to the Arctic or Antarctica often become cheerleaders for supporting those places, not only in the form of speaking with friends and family about important issues in those regions, but also giving money to conservation (保护) organizations,” said Jim Sano, vice-president for travel and conservation at World Wildlife Fund. Polar tourism also provides other benefits. “Many Arctic locals rely on tourists as a source of income,” said Sano. “One in 11 jobs are related to travel and tourism,” he said. “This encourages the local people to protect the place, and they can be much more effective guardians than the government.” What do you think? 28. According to the text, what makes the polar regions suffer from environmental problems? A. The lack of protection. B.The great number of tourists. C. The overuse of resources. D. The bad behavior of tourists. 29. GRID-Arendal's concern is related to the polar regions' . A. travel safety B. climate C. wildlife D. traffic condition 30. What will tourists who visit the polar regions probably do according to Jim Sano? A. Become concerned about the places. B. Set up charitable organizations. C.Change their attitudes to the earth. D. Encourage their friends to visit the places. 31. How can polar tourism benefit the locals ? A. By broadening their views. B. By letting them get access to modern life. C. By connecting them with the government closely. D. By helping the local economy. D Humans waste a huge amount of food — more than 1.4 billion tons yearly. That's roughly 400 million tons more than the weight of Japan's Mount Fuji, which rises 2.3 miles above sea level. If fighting global hunger wasn't enough to stop the disturbing trend, new research suggests that reducing food waste could greatly help in the fight against climate change. Jürgen Kropp,co-author of a new study looking at how today's surplus (剩余) of food is burdening the planet, said it's no secret the Western world is responsible for that. “Part of the climate crisis,” Kropp said, “is due to our food consumption style in Western countries.” The study, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, found that while consumption hasn't changed much over the last 50 years, the global surplus of food increased about 65 percent. The production of more and more food results in huge amounts of greenhouse gases being released, but hasn't reduced the number of people going hungry. According to the study, avoiding agricultural food waste could help prevent climate effects such as weather extremes and sea-level rise. “Agriculture is a major drive of climate change, accounting for more than 20 percent of overall global greenhouse-gas emissions(排放物) in 2010,” co-author Prajal Pradhan said in a statement. “Avoiding food loss and waste would therefore avoid unnecessary greenhouse-gas emissions and help mitigate climate change.” Each year, about one-third of the world's food gets lost or thrown away, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States. That wasted food, valued at nearly $1 trillion, could feed some 2 billion people. Unless a global effort is made to reduce the amount of food being wasted, researchers warn that by 2050, one-tenth of the agricultural sector's emissions could be traced back to the production of wasted food. 32. The new research mainly shows that_____. A. climate change can be prevented B. the Western world is eating a lot C. climate change is linked to food waste D. food waste worsens global hunger 33. What can we learn about the food consumption style in Western countries? A. It has reduced the number of people going hungry. B. It doesn't make good use of food. C. It doesn't influence the release of greenhouse gases. D. It has changed greatly during the last 50 years. 34. What does the underlined word “mitigate”in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Examine. B. Stop. C. Ease. D. Reflect. 35. The text shows that we should _____. A. prevent global warming B. end world hunger C. increase food production D. stop wasting food 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。并在答题卷上将该项涂黑。 Learning how to earn trust back can be tricky. After all, trust is not something freely given. 36 Luckily, I’m here to show you how to earn trust back. Read on to find out how. ◆ 37 The first step is to do something that will show that you are a good person. To do this, you must do something for the greater good — something that may not necessarily benefit you, but will benefit others around you. ◆Change the situation. 38 For example, if you broke your grandmother’s trust by accidentally losing the pair of earrings you borrowed from her, you have to search high and low for those earrings. Obviously, those were valuable to her and you broke her trust by being so careless with them. Apart from an apology, you need to work hard to replace the earrings to show your grandmother how truly sorry you are. ◆Be on your best behavior. 39 But no matter how long it takes, you need to be on your best behavior. If you broke your partner’s trust by seeing another person behind his back, you need to make up for the hurt you caused. If you truly want to learn how to earn trust back, there are certain things you must put up with. It’s not fun holding the wrong end of the stick. Trying to get someone to believe in you again is not going to be easy either. 40 A. Do something for the greater good. B. However, it is possible. C. Sometimes forgiveness is indeed trying your patience and driving you crazy. D. The second step is to find a solution to whatever it is you did to break another person’s trust. E. And once lost, it may take more than just an apology to get it back. F. Of course, forgiveness may not come as swiftly as you may have hoped it would. G. Trust is a feeling of confidence in someone that shows you believe them. Anita worked hard and lost 350 pounds.
