Fragile items like those made of glass are easily broken and should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them in the cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you. There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens. During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the staircases at all times. If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object. If trapped in debris (瓦砾堆), cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or the wall so that rescuers can find you. Use a whistle (哨子) if one is able to get. Never shout for help. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous amounts of dust. Do not light a match(火柴) because you may burn yourself. Do not move about or kick up dust. 24. The purpose of the passage is to tell readers__________. A.the damage caused by earthquakes B. the rescue work after earthquakes C. how to prevent earthquakes D. what to do about earthquakes 25. The underlined word “Fragile” in Paragraph 2 probably means “__________”. A. Easily found B. Easily broken C. Expensive D. Heavy 26. During the earthquake, people are advised to __________. A. go out of the building at once B. drive to a safe place quickly C. take shelter under a tree D. turn off electricity and gas immediately 27. When trapped in debris, you’d better not ___________. A. shout for help aloud. B. cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. C. tap on a pipe or the wall hard so that rescuers can find you. D. use a whistle if possible. C If you see a group of kids hitting and abusing(虐待) an animal, would you stop them? Would you at least call the police? Again people would walk away. Some people do not believe that animal abuse is a big problem. Every day animals are abused in their homes or on the streets. It seems as if politicians do nothing to stop this issue. Everyone is worried about education and global warming. What about animals? We should not ignore them just because they cannot talk to us. Animals, like us humans, have rights. Every living being has the right to warm shelter and good food, but most importantly, they have the right to be wanted and loved. They have the right to be a special, much loved member of their own family. There are many organizations that deal with abused animals or animals that have no home like ASPCA, PETA, the Humane Society and many more. There are organizations that deal with this issue, but that does not mean that we still shouldn’t help. The biggest saying that bothers me is, "I am only one person. I can’t make a difference." If everyone thought like that, we wouldn’t have the organizations and loving people who help the world every day. By helping one animal, you are making a difference. There are many things you can do right now to help animals around your neighborhood. You can volunteer at your local animal shelter, raise money for animal shelters, inform your community about animal abuse or you can write to your representatives and tell them that animal abuse needs to be taken seriously. As you walk down the street, try to help any animals you see walking around. You can easily buy a cheap box of dry cat or dog food to feed the animals. If we do not help our animals now, we may never have animals again. Always remember that with every step you take, you help save an animal’s life and isn’t that worth fighting for? 28. Some people won’t stop kids from abusing animals because ____________. A. they are too busy to worry about the animals B. they don’t take animal abuse seriously C. they just leave it to the police D. they are afraid of being laughed at 29. We can learn from the text that ASPCA ____________. A. is another name for the Humane Society B. provides shelter for both animals and humans C. deals with such issues as education and global warming D. aims at protecting animals from being abused 30. Which of the following statements will the author agree with? A. Dogs have the right to be treated kindly. B. One person cannot possibly make a difference. C. Cruelty to animals deserves(应受到) more attention than global warming. D. It is the politicians’ duty to stop animal abuse. 31. The main purpose of the text is to ____________. A. Criticize(批评) those who abuse animals B. advise people to stop animal abuse C. show how animals are abused D. explain why people abuse animals D Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg, a distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I became increasingly impatient. At one point along an open road, I came to a crossing with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I drove near the light, it turned red and I made a stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile at any direction. I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being caught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going thorough it. Much later that night, the question of why I’d stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it’s part of a contract (契约) we all have with each other. It’s not only the law, but it’s an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don’t go through red lights. Trust is our first inclination (倾向). Doubting others does not seem to be natural to us. The whole construction of our society depends on mutual (互相) trust, not distrust. We do what we say we’ll do; we show up when we say we’ll show up;and we pay when we say we’ll pay. We trust each other in these matters, and we’re angry or disappointed with the person or organization that breaks the trust we have in them. 32. Why did the author feel impatient while driving? A.He came across too many traffic lights. B. He got tired of driving too long. C. He was lonely on the road. D. He was slowed down by a truck. 33. What was the author’s immediate action when the traffic light turned red? A. Stopping still. B. Driving through it. C. Looking around for other cars. D. Checking out for traffic police. 34. The event made the author strongly believe that ________. A. traffic rules may be unnecessary B. doubting others is human nature C. patience is important to drivers D. a society needs mutual trust 35. Why was the author proud of himself? A. He kept his promise. B. He held back his anger. C. He made a right decision---not running the light. D. He followed his inclination---running the light. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Ussery started driving 20 years ago and now transports more than 35 special-needs students from the Metro School area.
