A travel brochure D. A news report (Keys CABA) B When I was younger, bedtime was always my favorite part of the day. Wearing soft pajamas and with Ian, my stuffed monkey, in my arms, I felt no pressure at all. I named Ian after my uncle when I compared Ian’s long arms and legs to his. One night I ran up to Uncle Ian at a family party and told him I had named my monkey after him. His eyebrows wrinkled in confusion, then a chuckle(哈哈笑)escaped his lips. I guess he didn’t understand how important it was to me. Even if Uncle Ian didn’t think my monkey was special, I certainly did. I dressed him in a white baby nightgown. My mother thought that Ian was the best-dressed stuffed animal in the world. Yes, he was certainly a fashionable creature. The strong cologne(科隆香水)I used on him years ago makes him still smell “pretty”. For a long time, Ian went everywhere with me. He was my best friend, and I told him everything. But when I turned twelve, I realized I was too old for stuffed animals. I thought people would think I was babyish, so I put him in the cupboard with the rest of my teddy bears and dolls. I begged him to understand why I was doing this, but at the same time I longed to talk to him again. It took me several years to realize that it was OK to miss Ian. I know now that maturity(成熟)doesn’t only mean growing up and taking on more responsibility. It also means holding on to your childhood and acting young sometimes. Ian has been with me since I was six years old holding him in my arms connects me to my past and my present as I continue to grow and understand myself. 25.Which of the following is not true according to the text? A.Bedtime used to be the writer’s favorite part of the day because of the stuffed monkey. B.Uncle Ian liked the stuffed monkey as much as the writer. C.The writer used to carry the monkey with her wherever she went. D.Years later the writer realized that it was not wrong to miss Monkey Ian. 26.The writer loved Monkey Ian deeply because __________. A.he could understand her B.he was a fashionable monkey C.he could talk with her D.he was her most honest listener 27.We can learn from the text that the writer believes ________. A.keeping stuffed animals is babyish B.maturity doesn’t mean growing up and taking on more responsibility C. one should keep to his childhood and act young sometimes even when he has grown up D.human beings should be kind to animals 28.We can infer from the text that _________. A.the writer is still a teenager B.the writer is now a middle-aged woman C.Monkey Ian got angry for being left alone D.Uncle Ian has a monkey-like face (Keys BDCA) C Global Positioning Systems are now a part of everyday driving in many countries. These satellite-based systems provide turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to go. But, they can also cause a lot of problems, send you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, say Barry Brown, it is a combination of the two. We spoke to Mr. Brown by Skype. He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS-equipped car to use during his stay. Barry Brown: “And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasn’t until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they actually put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS is kind of ‘garbage in garbage out’.” Mr. Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says, what makes the problem worse has something to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment. Barry Brown: “One problem with a lot of the GPS units is that they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that it is going to the wrong place.” Barry Brown formerly served as a professor with the University of California, San Diego. While there, he worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in people’s cars. They wrote a paper based on their research. It is called “The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS.” It lists several areas where GPS systems can cause confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand. They also include timing issues related to when GPS commands are given. Barry Brown says, “ to make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together.” 29.In Para. 2, Mr. Brown mentioned his friend in the conversation to ________. A.laugh at his stupid friend B.describe an example of human error C.build up his own reputation D.prove the GPS system is only garbage 30.Which of the following statement would Barry Brown be most likely to agree with? A.GPS units are to blame for the most GPS service failure. B.We should introduce higher standard for the driving license C.Cameras are urgently needed to help improve GPS systems. D.Some shortcomings of GPS equipment are more likely to result in service failure. 31.According to Barry and Eric, which of the following is NOT among the areas of GPS systems that may confuse drivers? A.Wrong maps B.Out-dated maps C.Difficult instructions D.Timing of GPS commands. 32.What would be the best title for the text? A.Driving Confusions Can Be Caused By Small Screen B.Driving with GPS Can Be Difficult C.Driving without GPS Should Be Much More Convenient D.GPS Equipment In Driving: To Be Deserted Or Not (Keys BDCB) D In the 1960s, medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated the point that any major change can be stressful. Negative events like “serious illness of a family member” were high on the list, but so were some positive life – changing events, like marriage. When you take the Holmes – Rahe test, you must remember that the score does not show how you deal with stress – it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you handle these events greatly affects your chances of staying healthy. By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow, the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women’s magazines ran headlines like “Stress causes illness!” If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy, the articles said, avoid stressful events. But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous, many – like the death of a loved one – are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription(处方) for staying away from opportunities as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move. The notion that all stress makes you sick also ignores a lot of what we know about people. It assumes we’re all sensitive and passive in the face of hardship. But what about human initiative (积极性) and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental vigor (活力) than they had before. We also know that a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredom, and physical and mental stress. 33.The studies on stress in the early 1970’s led to . A.widespread concern over its harmful effects B.great panic over the mental disorder it could cause C.an further research into stress – related illness D.popular avoidance of stressful jobs 34.Why is “such simplistic advice” in the third paragraph impossible to follow? A.No one can stay on the same job for long. B.No prescription is effective in relieving stress. C.People have to get married someday. D.You could be missing opportunities as well. 35.We can infer from the passage people would become after experiencing stress. A.nervous when faced with difficulties B.physically and mentally stressful C.more skillful of dealing with hardship D.unconcerned with what happens to them (Keys ADC) Being Left-handed in a Right-handed World The world is designed for right-handed people, but why does a tenth of the population prefer the left? 36 The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery. Since scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in families: it’s assumed that left-handedness has a genetic part to it. 37 In fact, identical twins, who share the same genes, can sometimes prefer to use different hands. There are also plenty of theories on what else might determine which hand you write with, but many experts believe that it’s kind of random. Historically, the left side and left-handedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures. 38 In some areas, the left hand became known as the “unclean” hand. In many religions, the right hand of God is the favored hand. For example, Jesus sits at God’s right side. God’s left hand, however, is the hand of judgement. Various activities and experiences become rude or even signs of bad luck when the left hand becomes involved. In some parts of Scotland, it is considered bad luck to meet a left-handed person at the start of a journey. 39 A person giving directions will put their left hand behind them and even physically try to point with their right hand if necessary. In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite. 40 People come to realize that left-handedness is natural. People even noticed that many famous people are left-handed, including Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Charlie Chaplin. Some researchers find out that lefties are more creative and can deal with abstract thinking better. The left-handedness is more easily adaptable to the right-handed world as well. Being left-handed is no longer a sad story now; instead, it is a wonderful gift or maybe it is something you should take pride in. A.In other words, left-handers are born that way. B.Left-handedness used to be regarded as a disability. C.The unfavorable associations of the use of the left hand among cultures varied. D.Why do they prefer to use their left hand rather than their right hand for routine activities? E.Why do some parents force their left-handed children to become right-handed when writing? F.In Ghana, pointing, gesturing, giving or receiving items with the left hand is considered rude. G.Fortunately, nowadays most societies and cultures no longer reject left-handedness like before.
