A When the musical sound rings out, you immediately reach for your pocket ready to have a chat. But although you probably use it all the time, have you ever stopped to think about the manners related to talking on the phone? If you haven’t, here are some tips to guide you. · Always give the person you are calling plenty of time to get to the phone before you hang up. If the person who answers is not the one you want, give your name and ask if you may speak to the person you want. · Think about the time you call people. Try not to call too early in the morning (before about 9: 00) or too late at night (after about 9:30). Also try not to call at mealtimes. · If you go by plane to visit your relatives at Christmas, remember to follow airline instructions. Cell phones must be turned off as soon as the plane doors are closed and remain so until the doors open again on arrival. · When face-to-face with someone, do not talk on the phone. It is rude to be on the phone when a waiter is trying to take your order in a restaurant, or when you are returning the shoes you have just been trying on in a shop. Finish any face-to-face business before taking a call. Continuing to use the phone while nodding to the person in front of you is quite impolite. · When in a restaurant with your friends, keep phone conversations short. Make a call only if it is important. Practice speaking in a low voice. If no one looks your way, you’ve got it. · If you go to a theatre, a concert or a cinema, consider the other people around you. Check that your phone is “off” before you enter. If you are expecting a very important call, put your phone on “ vibrate” (振动) and run for the exit as soon as you feel it. If you forget both “off” and “vibrate” and your phone rings, don’t answer it, turn it off straight away. 1. Which is true according to the passage above? A. You may call people anytime as you like. B. You may talk loudly on the phone at dinner in the restaurant. C. You may keep on talking on the phone while greeting somebody. D. You may call people as soon as you get on the plane, but not after the doors are closed. 2. We may infer from these tips that _____. A. some people don’t pay much attention to manners while making cell phone calls B. you may ask to leave a message unless the person you are calling is in C. calling people too early or too late in the morning is not polite D. almost everyone has got a cell phone 3. What does the underlined sentence “…you’ve got it ” mean in the passage? A. You have succeeded in making a call without disturbing others. B. You have made the phone call brief and interesting. C. You’ve got the message you are waiting for. D. You have made a phone call secretly. 4. From the tips given above, we can decide the writer is sure to share the opinion that _____. A. like the saying “clothes make a man”, nowadays cell phones make a man B. as the old saying goes, money talks; nowadays cell phones talk C. the way we use the cell phones tells what we are like D. we are what cell phones we use B As graduation day approached, excitement increased. Being out of high school meant I was finally coming of age. Soon I would be on my own, making my own decisions, doing what I wanted without someone looking over my shoulder and it meant going to school with boys-a welcome change coming from an all-girl high school. There was never any question in my mind that I would go to a college away from home. My mother’s idea, on the other hand, was just the opposite. Trying her best not to force her preferences on me, she would subtly ask whether I had considered particular schools-all of which happened to be located in or near my hometown of Chicago. Once it was established that, as long as it was financially affordable, I would be going away anyway, my family’s perspective changed. Their concern shifted from whether I was going away to how far. The schools I was considering on the East Coast suddenly looked much more attractive than those in California. But which college I would attend was just one of what seemed like a never-ending list of unknowns: What would college be like? Would I be unbearably lonely not knowing anyone else who was going to the same school? Would the other students like me? Would I make friends easily? Would I miss my family so much that I wouldn’t be able to stand it? And what about the work-would I be able to keep up? (Being an A student in high school seemed to offer little assurance I would be able to survive college.) What if the college I selected turned out to be a horrible mistake? Would I be able to transfer to another school? Then panic set in. My feelings took a 180-degree turn. I really didn’t want to leave high school at all, and it was questionable whether I wanted to grow up after all. It had been nice being respected as a senior by the underclass students for the past year; I didn’t enjoy the idea of being on the bottom rung of the ladder again. Despite months of expectation, nothing could have prepared me for the impact of the actual day. As the familiar music of “Pomp and Circumstance” echoed in the background, I looked around at the other students in white caps and gowns as we solemnly (庄严地) filed into the auditorium (礼堂). Tears welled up uncontrollably in my eyes, and I was consumed by a rush of sadness. As if in a daze, I rose from my seat when I heard my name called and slowly crossed the stage to receive my diploma (毕业证书). As I reached out my hand, I knew that I was reaching not just for a piece of paper but for a brand-new life. Exciting as the prospect of a new life seemed, it wasn’t easy saying good-bye to the old one-the familiar faces, the familiar routine. I would even miss that chemistry class I wasn’t particularly fond of and the long commute each day between home and school that I hated. Good or bad, it was what I knew. That September, I was fortunate to attend a wonderful university in Providence, Rhode Island. I needn’t have worried about liking it. My years there turned out to be some of the best years of my life. And as for friends, some of the friendships I formed there I still treasure today. Years later, financial difficulties forced my high school to close its doors for good. Although going back is impossible, it’s comforting to know I can revisit my special memories any time. 5. C In the US, interest in tea ranges from coast to coast with the highest in Hawaii and California but stretching to the eastern states of Vermont and New York. On the other hand, the highest interest in coffee tends to be concentrated more in the north and western regions(地区), with the highest search volumes appearing in the states of Hawaii, Washington and Minnesota. Tea and coffee are two of the most widely consumed drinks in the United States. With popularity and interest in tea continuing to grow in recent years, many consumers have recently considered making the switch from coffee to tea, if they have not done so already. All the buzz surrounding tea and coffee may have you wondering, what are the differences? As it turns out, the differences are many and varied. Differences between tea and coffee also vary in origin and production. All tea comes from the harvested leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, while there are about 60 different species of coffee plants. Production of tea is quicker and more efficient: Camellia sinensis plants only need to grow for three years before they are ready to process; coffee plants take up to five years. Perhaps the most concerning issue consumers have when considering making the switch to tea is the question of caffeine. The good news is, when it comes to tea and caffeine, there is something for everyone. Unlike coffee, which typically only comes in decaffeinated and regular, there are several varieties of tea available, based on caffeine preference. From herbal teas that are naturally free of caffeine, to high quality green and black teas that offer less than half the caffeine of coffee, to high caffeine teas such as our specially formulated HiCAF® blends that contain slightly more caffeine than a cup of coffee, there is a variety sure to suit your needs. As an added bonus, the lower acidity levels in tea tend to be gentler on the stomach for a more comforting pick-me-up. So what is the answer, coffee or tea? If you are looking for the most healthful benefit possible, tea is probably the winner. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. If, like many Americans, the rising popularity in tea has your interest piqued(激起), the images below will help to clearly spell out the differences between tea and coffee. 9. It can be learned from the passage that ______. A. coffee is of much higher production than tea B. tea and coffee are from harvested leaves of plants C. the popularity of tea is growing constantly in the US D. there is no regional difference in drinking tea and coffee 10. According to the passage, which of the following contains the least caffeine? A. Green tea. B. Black tea. C. Herbal tea. D. HiCAF® blends. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards tea? A. Positive. B. Cautious. C. Doubtful D. Negative. D By now, we are all aware that social media(媒体) has had a tremendous influence on our culture, in business, on the world-at-large. Social media websites revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the Web. However, aside from seeing your friends’ new baby on Facebook, or reading about Justin Bieber’s latest conflict with the law on Twitter, what are some of the real influences? Social networks offer the opportunity for people to re-connect with their old friends and acquaintances(熟人), make new friends, share ideas and pictures, and many other activities. Users can keep pace with the latest global and local developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their choice. Professionals use social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance their career and business development. Students can work together with their peers to improve their academic and communication skills. Unfortunately, there are a few downsides too to social networking. If you are not careful, immoral people can target you for cyber bullying and disturbance on social sites. School children, young girls, and women can fall victim to online attacks which can create tension and suffering. If you are a victim of cyber bullying(欺凌), do not take it lying down, but try to take appropriate(合适的) legal action against the attacker. Many companies have blocked social networks as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work. In fact, studies show that British companies have lost billions of dollars per year in productivity because of social media addiction among employees. Also, what you carelessly post on the Net can come back to trouble you. Revealing( 泄露) personal information on social sites can make users vulnerable(易受伤害的)to crimes like identity theft(偷窃), stalking(隐伏跟踪), etc. Many companies perform a background check on the Web before hiring an employee. If a potential employee has posted something embarrassing on social media, it can greatly affect their chances of getting the job. The same holds true for our relationships too, as our loved ones and friends may get to know if we post something undesirable on social networks. Social media has its advantages and drawbacks as each coin has two sides. It is up to each user to use social sites wisely to enhance their professional and social life, and exercise caution(小心、谨慎) to ensure they do not fall victim to online dangers. 12. Paragraph 2 mainly shows that social networks _________. A. benefit users in various ways B. offer offer professionals good chances C. guide users to make right choices users to make right choices D. help students finish their homework 13. Faced with problems caused by social media, some companies ________. A. take legal action against the attackers B. avoid posting embarrassing information C. refuse to hire potential addicted employees D. forbid the use of social networks during work time 14. The main purpose of this passage is to _________. A. share experiences in using social media B. provide some advice on social problems C. raise public awareness of social problems D. remind people to wisely use social media 15. We are all rushing from one place to the next, blowing our horn at slow drivers who may be singing songs in the car with their children or pointing out some interesting sights. We don't have time for that silliness today. But we try to say to ourselves that we will make time for fun tomorrow. It is time to take a few deep breaths and think about our actions and our words. __16__ Have you ever really thought about the saying “Actions speak louder than words”? Think about it now. If you say one thing and act in an opposite way, will the words be ignored and just the actions remembered? I don’t think so. __17__ It is also equally important to use words to show appreciation, love, approval and happiness and then follow those words with a hug, pat on the back or smile. __18__ What about that saying? True? Yes! Words carry a lot of weight and will be remembered for years especially when they are written down. Mean words can hurt for that moment and for a lifetime. I am sure that each of us remembers a time when a friend made an unkind comment. __19__ Let’s not be a member of that “club”. When was the last time that you hid a love note in a lunch box or in your mate’s coat pocket? If you want to see a bright smile, that will do it! The power of this written note will be remembered for many days, even years. “I can live for two months on a good compliment(夸奖)”, said Mark Twain. Children grow stronger when they feel appreciated and understood. __20__ A perfect way to turn a bad day around is to praise your child. “I noticed that your hair looked very nice today.” “Did you hang your coat up all by yourself?” It is amazing how those few words can change a child's outlook... almost immediately. Don’t stop there... One of my sisters ended a phone conversation with three words ---“I love you”! Boy, that put a spring in my step! Mark Twain is right. I still feel the positive effect of those three little but very powerful words. A. Do they display the attitude that we want to convey? B. Is it really reasonable to do something like that? C. The pen is more powerful than the sword. D. It is important to have your words match your actions. E. Behavior is a mirror in which everyone shows his image. F. Don’t be afraid to shower your child with encouraging words all day long. G.Those words did lasting damage to you, the relationship or both. 第二部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分60分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Nothing is impossible if you set your mind on it. I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten years of living in one, I can’t imagine ever live in a small town again. Sure small towns and big cities either have some problems in terms of transport. In a small town, you have to own the car to make life comfortable. You can’t get around without one because there isn’t any kind of public transport. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, and there you have a choice of taking public transport, where is cheaper than driving. So, if you don’t have a car, you’d better live in the city. I also love the excited life in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts, and other wonderful shows. Of course, safety should be considered, and that’s one area where small towns are better than big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more careful and live in a large city than to feel safe but dull.
