It’s uncommon that you can see a duck on an airplane. So it’s no surprise that he caught people’s eye—both those on the plane and those looking at his photos online. Mark, whose photos got the most attention, says that everyone on the plane was delighted to have ‎ such a lovely duck on board, and couldn’t stop taking photos of him.‎ Daniel is a support animal for his owner, Carla, who is recovering from stress disorder. In 2012, Carla adopted Daniel as a pet, but being involved in a terrible accident a year later, he became her support animal. She was a horse-and-carriage driver, when a car crashed into her carriage from behind, injuring the horse and her.‎ It took Carla four months to learn how to walk again, but apart from physical pain, she also had to deal with stress disorder. However, Daniel was there for her when she needed him. Carla wouldn’t be able to leave the house after the accident if it weren’t for Daniel. Since the accident, the duck has accompanied her everywhere, mostly on car rides. This time marked his first airplane flight. Carla had a letter from her doctor in which he states that it is in her best interest to have Daniel around as a support animal. She presented it to the flight crew so they allowed the duck on board.‎ Daniel is apparently smarter than your average bird, too. When he’s at home and he needs his diaper(尿布) changed, he just walks to the changing table. When he’s hungry, he walks to the refrigerator or to his feed bowl. “Some people have dogs. Others have cats. I have a duck,” Carla said “I hope more people can accept that a duck can make a very good, loving and loyal companion and support animal.”‎ ‎24. A Kind Companion for the Disabled C When he was a schoolboy, Liu Cixin’s favourite book was Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne. He found the book hidden in an old box that once belonged to his father. "This very book turned me into a sci-fi fan ", Liu says.‎ His first novel, The Devils Bricks, came out in 2000, but it wasn’t until 2006 that he had his breakthrough with The Three-Body Problem. The Three-Body Problem was brought to a western audience by Tor Books in New York in 2013. It was translated by Ken Liu. In his translator’ s note, Ken writes: “The Chinese people literary tradition shaped and was shaped by its readers, giving rise ‎ to different emphases(强调) and preferences in fiction compared to what American readers expect,”‎ What western readers expect of Chinese science fiction is a curious topic. Western eyes have a tendency to view China as a country full of mystery. But Liu says it’s a mistake to think that Chinese sci-fi doesn’t share common points with its western equivalents(同等物). “All themes once explored in the American and European sci-fi genre (类型) can be found in the Chinese counterpart----things like space exploration, alien contact, artificial intelligence, and life science. Yet Chinese sci-fi does have its own unique themes as well, such as the attempt to re-display the ancient history of China from a sci-fi angle.”‎ Liu remains mildly surprised by the success of The Three-body Problem outside China. "All we had hoped for was just to let American readers become aware that there is sci-fi in China. Now that it has been accepted by readers in the UK and the US, it supports an idea I once had: sci-fi is the most global, the most universal of literary forms, which can be understood by all cultures. Sci-fi novels are concerned with problems faced by all of humanity. This is a unique and treasurable quality in the genre ---that the human race is recognized as a single entin(存在), undivided," Liu says.‎ ‎28. What did the book Journey to the Centre of the Earth mean to Liu?‎ A. It opened the door to the sci-fi world. ‎ B. It told him what science fiction is.‎ C. It brought some fame to him. ‎ D. It inspired him to be a critic.‎ ‎29. How does Ken look at the Chinese literary tradition?‎ A. It lacks variety. ‎ B. It should be well preserved.‎ C. It is greatly influenced by its audiences. ‎ D. It has met western readers’ expectations.‎ ‎30. What is a characteristic of Chinese sci-fi?‎ A. It has a wide range of themes. ‎ B. It is abstract to western readers. ‎ C. It pays more attention to history. ‎ D. It is gaining popularity among youths.‎ ‎31. What do Liu’s words in the last paragraph show?‎ A. Chinese sci-fi still has a long way to go B. Sci-fi novels reflect real-life problems C. The importance of sci-fi is undervalued D. Sci-fi should focus primarily on culture D More than half of UK parents believe sunglasses should become an official part of school uniform, a study has found.‎ A study of 1,000 parents with children aged 4-12 found 72 percent worried about protecting their child’s eyes from the sun; however, only three in 10 sent their child to school with sunglasses every time it was sunny, with one-quarter even saying their child was forbidden by their school from wearing sunglasses on school grounds.‎ A spokesperson for Monkey Monkey Sunglasses, which commissioned(正式委托) the study, ‎ said: “Parents are consistently telling us that their children are more likely to wear sunglasses on holiday or during leisure activities than at school. We just want parents to know that the midday and afternoon sun can be equally strong on the school playground, on the school sports field, or on the walk home from school, as it is on the beach. Wearing hats and staying in the shade during these times help reduce UV exposure but are not a surrogate for wearing sunglasses with full UVA and UVB protection, because UV rays reflect through cloud cover and reflect off a variety or surfaces.‎ Researchers also found only 16 percent of those surveyed said their children always worn sunglasses on a sunny day and one in four said their child did not currently own a pair of sunglasses.‎ Parents of children who rarely or never wear sunglasses said their kids found them uncomfortable to wear and avoid them if they can. However, 57 percent who have bought their children sunglasses checked the glasses for their UV protection rating before making the purchase.‎ When asked about their knowledge about surrounding surfaces which reflect and increase UV radiation, 61 percent of parents who took part in the study correctly said that snow reflected UV rays. One in four said concrete(混凝土) surfaces and 56 percent pointed to water as a key reflector of UV rays.‎ Monkey Monkey’s spokesperson added: “It is said that up to 80 percent of a person’s lifetime exposure to UV is received before the age of 18, when children’s eyes are also not yet fully developed. So we can see what we should do.”‎ ‎32. What is the finding of the study?‎ A. Most British schools required students to wear sunglasses.‎ B. Nearly half of British schools forbade students to wear sunglasses.‎ C. Most British parents didn’t help protect their child’s eyes from the sun at school.‎ D. British parents lacked the awareness of protecting their children’s eyes.‎ ‎33. What does the underlined word “surrogate” in Para. 3 probably mean?‎ A. Replacement. ‎ B. Requirement.‎ C. Guarantee. ‎ D. Solution.‎ ‎34. What can we know about the surveyed parents?‎ A. Few of them bought sunglasses for their children.‎ B. Some of them had a certain understanding of UV rays.‎ C. Most of them didn’t know about UV radiation.‎ D. Some of them thought wearing sunglasses was uncomfortable.‎ ‎35. Monkey Monkey’s spokesperson thinks that ______.‎ A. children should not be exposed to too much sunshine B. children had better not play on the school playground in the afternoon C. it is unnecessary for children to wear sunglasses when taking part in activities D. it is important to protect kids’ eyes from sun exposure at an early age 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ It is easy to talk yourself out of exercising.
