Her father was governor of one of the islands of the West Indies. Miss Lucas often got seeds (种子) from her father, and then she planted them in South Carolina.‎ Once, her father sent her some seeds of the indigo plant. She planted some of these in March, but a frost came and killed all her plants. However, she decided to plant some more seeds in April. These grew very well until a cutworm found them and ate her plants. Once more Miss Lucas planted some of the seeds. This time the plants grew very well. She wrote to her father about it. He sent her a man who knew how to get the indigo out of the plant.‎ However, the man tried not to show Miss Lucas how to make the indigo. He did not want the people in South Carolina to learn how to make it. He was afraid his own people would not get so much money for their indigo if other people made it as well. So he destroyed the indigo on purpose. But Miss Lucas watched him closely. She worked out how the indigo could be made. Some of her father’s land in South Carolina was now planted with the indigo plant.‎ Then Miss Lucas got married, and became Mrs. Pinckney. Her father gave her all the indigo growing on his land in South Carolina. It was all saved for seed. Some of the seed Mrs. Pinckney gave to her friends. Some of it her husband sowed (播种). It all grew and was made into that blue dye (染料) that we call indigo. In a few years, South Carolina was producing more than a million pounds of indigo every year.‎ ‎24. Eliza Lucas got her father’s land in South Carolina.‎ C To get in shape soon, some people use "quick "methods without realizing that these methods can put their overall health in danger. For example, they lose weight by eating fat-free food. It's true that consuming fewer fats can help you get in shape sooner, but low-fat foods, like dried fruits, nuts, beans, etc, actually contain high amounts of calories. For example, fruit juice contains no fat, but has high calories. So drinking more than one glass of fruit juice won’t help in losing weight.‎ To rely only on vegetable juice to lose weight is also a wrong method. By replacing your meal with only juice, you decrease the calorie intake greatly. It’ll help lose weight, but it can make you suffer from lack of energy, headaches, stomach disorders.‎ It's true that exercise helps to keep healthy weight. but it’ll probably not help you much if you don't take care of your diet by reducing your calorie intake. If you believe you can exercise every day and eat as much as you want, you ’re way off base. To get rid of obesity healthily, you need to burn more calories than you consume. So. you need to limit the intake of food.‎ Wrong weight-loss methods are dangerous. So, if in doubt, you’d better ask a doctor before starting weight-loss routine. Luckily. it's possible to lose weight with healthy methods. For example, follow healthy food habits, exercise regularly for 20-30 minutes every day. and go on with a healthy lifestyle even after you lose weight. Anyway, as excess weight isn’t gained overnight, it cannot be ‎ lost in a short time either. Give yourself some time. Although healthy methods may take a bit longer to work, they’re surely good for your body.‎ ‎28. We can know from the first paragraph that______.‎ A. most people don’t lose weight safely B. fruit juice is low in fat and calories C. eating high-fat foods helps lose weight D. losing weight too fast is possibly harmful ‎29. Relying only on a liquid diet to lose weight is wrong because it______‎ A. increases the calorie intake greatly B. doesn’t help you to lose weight C. can cause a few health problems D. makes you skip meals ‎30. What does the underlined sentence "you' re way off base" mean in Paragraph 3?‎ A. You’re right B. You’re all right.‎ C. You’re wrong D. You’re misunderstood ‎31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?‎ A. We should be patient with losing weight B. We can actually lose weight safely and easily C. Regular exercise is enough for us to lose weight D. We don’t have to consider our doctor s advice D Mount Hood is the highest mountain in Oregon, a state in the western United States. At 3,400 meters it is attractive to many people, some of whom, of course, run into trouble. Each year 25 to 50 people have accidents or get lost on Mount Hood and require rescue. Although most of these are understandable accidents, a few result from careless risk-taking.‎ In one recent case, three experienced climbers went hiking in the middle of a snowstorm in December. Most hikers climb Mount Hood in May or June when the weather conditions are favorable. But in December, the mountain is covered in snow and ice. Winds up to 135 kilometers per hour blow the snow around making it difficult to see. Temperatures can drop below freezing. As one rescue worker put it, “What were they thinking? They were just asking for it.”‎ During a rescue a few years ago, a helicopter full of rescue workers crashed (坠毁) and the rescue workers were almost killed. Linda Carle, who lives in the Mount Hood area, asks, “If someone made a poor decision, why should rescue teams have to risk their lives to save them? Why do people take unnecessary risks and do things that aren’t right if they know that they can get into ‎ trouble?”‎ Most of the Mount Hood rescue workers are either volunteers or part of the local sheriff’s department. There is no charge for these rescues. It is the taxpayers (纳税人) who pay the bill. Linda Carle suggests that people who take careless risks and require rescue should be charged for the rescue. She feels it is only fair that costs for things like damaged helicopters and medical care for rescuers be paid for by the people who took the risks. What would you do if you were the local sheriff at Mount Hood?‎ ‎32. What can we learn about Mount Hood?‎ A. It lies in the south of the United States. ‎ B.
