Obscene(淫秽) and pirated(盗版) materials In many Western countries, possessing and transporting underage porn(黄色书刊) is considered a serious crime. A science report B On October 19, 1959, the first Special English program was broadcast on the Voice of America. It was an experiment. The goal was to communicate by radio in clear and simple English with people whose native language is not English. Experts said the goal was admirable, but the method would not work. They were proved wrong. The Special English programs quickly became some of the most popular on VOA. And they still are. Forty years later, Special English continues to communicate with people who are not fluent in English. But during the years its role has expanded. It also helps people learn American English. And it provides listeners, even those who are native English speakers, with information they cannot find elsewhere. Today, Special English broadcasts around the world seven days a week, five times a day. Each half-hour broadcast begins with ten minutes of the latest news followed by 20 minutes of feature programming. There is a different short feature every weekday about science, development, agriculture and environment, and on the weekend, about news events and American idioms. Three elements make Special English unique. It has a limited vocabulary of 1500 words. Most are simple words that describe objects, actions or emotions. Some are more difficult. They are used for reporting world events and describing discoveries in medicine and science. Special English is written in short, simple sentences that contain only one idea. No idioms are used. And Special English is spoken at a slower pace, about two-thirds the speed of Standard English. This helps people learning English hear each word clearly. It also helps people who are English speakers understand complex subjects. Through the years, Special English has become a very popular tool for teaching English, even though it was not designed as teaching program. It succeeds in helping people learn English in a non-traditional way. Individuals record the programs and play them over and over to practice their listening skills. In countries around the world, English teachers assign Special English to their students. They praise it for improving their students’ ability to understand American English and for the content of the programs. Universities and private companies in many countries produce packages of Special English materials for student use. 24. At the beginning, Special English program was . From the last paragraph we can infer that . A. listening to Special English can be a student’s homework B. listening to Special English can improve the content of the program C. some student record the Special English material for sale D. learning English from VOA is a traditional way for English learner C Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life. Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregivers. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings. One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby. The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again. Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children. Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere(干预) unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression. The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear. These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression. 28. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences intelligence development in babies? A. The environment. B. Their peers C. Mother’s sensitivity D. Education before birth 29. What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories? A. To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born B. To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies C. To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language skills D. To prove that babies can learn before they are born 30. Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills? A. The children of women who did not suffer from depression B. The children of depressed but caring mothers C. The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children D. Children with high communication abilities 31. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babies B. Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth C. Scientific findings about how time has an effect on babies’ intelligence D. A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are five or six months old D Self-driving cars are so popular that the University of Michigan has even established a town called Mcity to allow car manufacturers to safely test their autonomous cars. While Mcity can be used to simulate(模拟) many real-life road conditions, it cannot help test gestures drivers use to communicate their intention to other drivers, pedestrians or cyclists. To find a solution, US car manufacturer Ford, with researchers from Virginia Tech, initially considered using text as a way to communicate the car's intention, but decided it would probably not work universally. The option of using symbols was also discarded, because research shows that a majority of people do not have a good understanding of what they mean. Finally, the researchers settled on light signals. A white light warned that there were no humans in the car. A slow blinking one indicated that the car was coming to a stop, while a rapidly flashing light cautioned passersby that the car was about to accelerate. Then came the big challenge-testing the signals on real roads. “We needed to try out this new lighting to communicate the intention of the vehicle, but if you’ve got a driver behind the seat, you still have natural communication between humans,” said Andy Shaudt, who led the Virginia Tech research team. “So we needed to make it look like a driverless ear.” The team designed a car seat costume(戏装) that the driver would wear to cover his/her face and upper body. Of course, the drivers could see very clearly. The researchers then equipped the car with cameras to capture human reactions to a light bar on the windshield(挡风玻璃), which flashed one of the three signals when appropriate. Six drivers, all keeping their hands low on the wheel so as not to be detected, took turns to test driving the car through the busy streets. The overall reaction to the flashing lights was very encouraging. Who knew costumes could be useful for more than Halloween? 32. What did the team first consider using as a way to communicate the car's intention? A. Light B. Language C. Symbols D. Sound 33. The underlined word “they” in the second paragraph refers to . A. svmbo1s B. drivers C. researchers D. flashes 30. What does a rapidly flashing light mean? A. The car was coming to a stop B. There was no driver in the car C. The car was about to speed up D. The car was about to slow down 31. The car seat costume was intended to .
