But can you also smell their happiness?‎ ‎ Surprising new research suggests that happiness does indeed have a scent, and that the experience of happiness can be transmitted through smell, reports Phys.org.‎ ‎ For the study, 12 young men were shown videos meant to bring about a variety of emotions while researchers gathered sweat samples from them. All of the men were healthy and none of them were drug users or smokers, and all were asked to abstain from drinking or eating smelly foods during the study period.‎ ‎ Those sweat samples were then given to 36 equally healthy young women to smell, while researchers monitored their reactions. Only women were selected to smell the samples, apparently because previous research has shown that women have a better sense of smell than men and are also more sensitive to emotional signaling—though it’s unclear why only men were chosen to produce the scents.‎ ‎ Researchers found that the behavior of the women after smelling the scents—particularly their facial expressions—indicated a relationship between the emotional states of the men who produced the sweat and the women who sniffed them.‎ ‎ “Human sweat produced when a person is happy brings about a state similar to happiness in somebody who breathes this smell,” said study co-author Gun Semin, a professor at Koc University in Turkey.‎ ‎ This is a fascinating finding because it not only means that happiness does have a scent, but that the scent is capable of transmitting the emotion to others. The study also found that other emotions, such as fear, seem to carry a scent too. This ensures previous research suggesting that some negative emotions have a smell, but it is the first time this has proved to be true of positive feelings.‎ ‎ Researchers have yet to isolate exactly what the chemical compound for the happiness smell ‎ is, but you might imagine what the potential applications for such a finding could be. Happiness perfumes, for instance, could be invented. Scent therapies(香味疗法) could also be developed to help people through depression or anxiety.‎ ‎ Perhaps the most surprising result of the study, however, is our broadened understanding of how emotions get communicated, and also how our own emotions are potentially managed through our social context and the emotional states of those around us.‎ ‎62. What is the main finding of the new research?‎ ‎ A. Men produce more sweats.‎ ‎ B. Negative emotions have a smell.‎ ‎ C. Pleasant feelings can be smelt out.‎ ‎ D. Women have a better sense of smell.‎ ‎63. The underlined part “abstain from” in Paragraph 3 probably means _________.‎ ‎ A. avoid B. practice C. continue D. try ‎64. What is the application value of the new research?‎ ‎ A. Perfumes could help people understand each other.‎ ‎ B. Some smells could be developed to better our mood.‎ ‎ C. Perfumes could be produced to cure physical diseases.‎ ‎ D. Some smells could be created to improve our appearance.‎ ‎65. We can learn from the last paragraph that ___________.‎ ‎ A. happiness comes from a scent of sweat ‎ B. positive emotions can deepen understanding ‎ C. people need more emotional communication ‎ D. social surroundings can influence our emotions ‎ D Hartley got to Central Station nearly an hour before his train was due to leave. A lifetime in the theatre had given him a healthy—indeed excessive (过分的)—sense of punctuality; a lifetime of unwanted cups of coffee, constant checking of the time, yet another turn around the block before that all too often pointless, tiresome audition (试镜).‎ Hartley was 75—pretty fit for his age, legs holding lip, memory still ticking over nicely——though the occasions for punctuality were now rather fewer. But he was a creature of habit and couldn’t change now.‎ ‎ Hartley was a good actor, although the calls on his talents were now infrequent. But really, he thought he’d had a reasonably good career. Something to be proud of. But he’d never had that break-through part.‎ He headed for his platform. Just as the train was about to pull out a man ran down the platform, jumped aboard as the door slammed shut and sank into the seat next to Hartley.‎ ‎“Cutting it a bit fine”, he said.‎ ‎“Indeed”, Hartley replied. “A close run thing”.‎ The man—forty-ish, amiable looking—gave him an amused glance.‎ This brief exchange served as an adequate ice-breaker and they chatted their way through the outer suburbs and into the countryside. Having satisfactorily disposed of the sad state of the railways, country versus city living, his neighbour asked Hartley what he did—or had done—for a living.‎ Hartley hated telling people he was an actor. He was not ashamed of his job. Not in the least,‎ ‎ but he had long tired of reactions ranging from “what have I seen you in” to “how do you learn all those lines”.‎ So in situations like this he simply selected an occupation from a former role. Bit risky, of course. You say you’re a doctor and find yourself meeting the quizzical(疑问的)gaze of a heart surgeon. But he’d never been caught out and it was harmless enough game, Hartley felt. It amused him, and he’d given some damn good performances too.‎ ‎“I’m a lawyer”, he replied. “Retired several years ago. Property law. Bit of criminal stuff”.‎ The train was slowing down. The man glanced out of the window.‎ ‎“My station. I had you quite wrong then”.‎ He stood and took down his briefcase from the overhead rack.‎ ‎“Yes, I’d have said you were an actor. The voice especially. Still, lawyers are actors in a way, don’t you think? Plenty of drama in a courtroom”.‎ The train drew into the station.‎ ‎“I’m a film director. Casting a feature at the moment. You study faces. On the train. Everywhere. Always on the lookout. Anyway, enjoyed our chat. Bye.”‎ 66. The writer refers to Hartley’s sense of punctuality as “excessive”. Which of the following phrases ‎ ‎ fails to describe his sense of time?‎ A.Nearly an hour before his train. ‎ B.A lifetime of unwanted cups of coffee.‎ C.Another turn around the block before that audition. ‎ D.A creature of habit that couldn’t change now.‎ 67. What did Hartley think of his not telling his occupation?‎ A. Harmful to his acting career. B. Amusing despite the risk C. Helpful to protect his identity D. Upsetting when caught out.‎ ‎68. What can we learn about Hartley’s travel companion from the underlined sentence “I had you quite wrong then.”?‎ A. He assumed Hartley had given another answer. ‎ B. He understood Hartley’s profession was acting.‎ C. He thought Hartley practiced a different profession. ‎ D. He mistook Hartley for another person.‎ ‎69. The use of the word “Bye” at the end of the story__________.‎ A. shows the readers how unexpectedly Hartley’s career ends ‎ B. describes Hanley’s shock on finding the man is a director C. confirms Hartley's lack of luck in spite of his acting skills D. proves the man will reconsider giving Hartley a chance to act ‎70.Which of the following can be the best title of the story?‎ A.Acting up B. Employ talents C. Selecting an occupation D. Casting a feature 第II卷 (非选择题,共35分)‎ 第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,共10分)‎ Everyone has periods in their lives when everything seems very hard, when there's nobody to talk to and the mood is just getting worse and worse. But why sit and think how pathetic (可怜的) you are? There are some things that may help you lift up your mood.If it fails you,at least while doing these things you won't have time to think of your problems. You win anyway!‎ The first thing you should try is socializing and thinking positively. It's very hard, because usually when we feel depressed we lock ourselves at home and try to think about all the bad character issues we have. But if you try to force yourself and call a friend for a cup of coffee, the chances for changing your mood into better are very good.Just try to avoid bad thoughts.Instead, try to think only about the bright side of your life.Don't forget:We are what we think we are.‎ You should also try doing something only for yourself, something totally selfish. This could be something you wanted for a long time:maybe a short trip,a coat,a ring or anything that could lift up your mood. This doesn't have to be costly. The point of all this is being good to yourself.Besides giving presents to yourself, buying things to others may be a perfect way to feel happy.Think of your friends, family, relatives or even local charities, choose one person and give him a gift.Making another person feel happy will make you feel good in your heart and mind.‎ Try to concentrate on the present and future to make your life better in every possible way. Most bad moods and mental attitudes are the result of something that happened to us in the past.It is vital to your mind, soul, body and your life on the whole that you stay in the present with all your thoughts and feelings.‎ If you have too much time, volunteer it.We usually think that the problems we have are huge, although if you try to go to hospital, you'll see that there are a lot of people who have more severe problems. Moreover, you'll see that people are still working, smiling and laughing. This kind of work will definitely help you understand that your problems are very small and maybe even funny.‎ Don't forget to be creative!Creating doesn't include only painting or playing an instrument,it also includes cooking, sewing, writing, photographing and many other activities. While concentrating on creating, you will forget how you have been feeling.‎ All you have to do is to take control of your emotions and make them positive instead of letting them control you.Making yourself feel better isn't that hard. It's hard only to start doing something that would lift up your mood.‎ Title:Lift up Your Mood ‎(71) _______ that everyone can meet with in their lives Everything seems very hard and there is nobody to talk to and the mood is just getting worse and worse.‎ ‎(72)________ to lifting up your mood Socialize and think in a (73)________ way.‎ ‎●(74) ________ bad thoughts will probably give you a good chance to change your mood.‎ Give presents to others ‎ (75)____ from yourself.‎ ‎●The roses in her hand;the (76)________ in mine.‎ Concentrate on the present and future.‎ ‎●By acting like this, something bad in the past (77)________ in bad moods may be driven out of your mind.‎ Spend your spare time doing (78)________ work.‎ ‎●By seeing and helping people in (79)________,we can understand our problems better.‎ Don't forget to be creative.‎ ‎●Focusing on creating will make you forget how you feels.‎ Conclusion You have to control your emotions and make them positive instead of being ‎ (80)________ by them.‎ 第五部分 书面表达(满分25分)‎ 请阅读下面的短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。‎ To win a national award for handwriting, especially in this digital age, is an achievement in itself. But what makes Anaya Ellick extra special is that the seven-year-old made the achievement despite having no hands. Even more amazing? The first-grader from Chesapeake, Virginia, does not use prosthetics(假肢).‎ The young girl who competed in the category for students with special needs had to beat 50 competitors to win the award. Contest director Kathleen Wright said the judges, many of whom are occupational doctors, were “just amazed” by the quality of Anaya’s printing. Wright says, “Her writing sample was comparable to someone who had hands.”‎ Anaya’s proud parents, Bianca Middleton and Gary Ellick say the young girl’s determination and desire to be independent became obvious when she was just a baby. Unable to hold on to her pacifier(安抚奶嘴)with her hands, she figured out how to do it by cupping her arms. As a young child, she learned to eat with a fork and build with blocks. At 5, she managed to hold a crayon or marker between her hands and draw. Though Anaya was fitted with prosthetic arms for a short time, the young girl decided she was better off with her natural ones and threw them away.‎ ‎【写作内容】‎ ‎ 1. ‎ 涟水中学2017届高三第一次模块检测 英语参考答案 第一部分 听力理解(共20小题;每小题1分,满分20分)‎ ‎1-5 CBBAC 6-10 ABBCA 11-15 CACCA 16-20 ABCBA 第二部分 英语知识运用(共35小题;每小题1分,满分35分)‎ ‎21-25 ABBBC 26-30 ACBDD 31-35 ADACA ‎ ‎36-40 BCDBB 41-45 DADAC 46-50 DCBAC 51-55 ABDCA 第三部分 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)‎ ‎56-57 BD 58-61CDCB 62-65 CABD 66-70 DBCCA 第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)‎ ‎71.Problems/Difficulties 72.Approaches ‎73.positive 74.Avoiding ‎ ‎75.apart/aside 76.flavor ‎ ‎77.resulting 78.voluntary ‎ ‎79.trouble/need/hospital 80.controlled ‎ 第五部分 书面表达(满分25分) ‎ A seven-year-old girl named Anaya Ellick, who was born without hands, beat fifty competitors to win a national award for handwriting, which makes her parents proud and inspires many people.‎ This story sets me thinking profoundly. Life can place a stumbling block in our way and definitely, it is always easier to give up than to hold on. However, like Anaya, constant effort yields sure success. If you pursue your goals with the courage of never giving up, you will succeed in whatever endeavor you take on.‎ As high school students, we are bound to encounter the twists and turns life offers us. But when we think of those people who suffer more than us, we should have a more optimistic view on study and draw lessons from the bumps and turns along the way. Bear it in mind that we should keep going forward, even in the toughest time. ‎
