Ten birds will be released(释放)from south of Edinburgh in summer 2018, with the hope of bringing the species back from disappearing in England. More eagles will be released in the summertime of the next five eyars. The project received £ 1.3 million of lottery funding in March and has now been awarded a further £ 150,000 to employ workers to run the operation. Project manager Cat Barlow said:“This is a really exciting time as the project is now starting to happen and we will soon start to see its benefits. Work will start next summer, when we will collect a number of golden eagle chicks in the Highlands and bring them south to be reared and released from an already selected place.” The birds will be released with satellite tracking tags that will allow the scientists to gather information about their behavior and find if they suddenly go offline. Recently, golden eagles have died out in England as the last known individual is believed to have died. Due to the popularity of shooting birds of prey(食肉猛禽), those birds in the wild struggle to survive. Main causes of death are systematic poisoning, shooting and nest disturbance by gamekeepers. It is hoped that the newly released birds will move further south in search of new living areas and food supplies. The project expects to see the number of wild birds in Scotland and England increase as the range of the animals develops. While the birds were gone in England, in the Highlands of Scotland the number of golden eagles rocketed. With up to 500 breeding pairs, the chicks will be sourced from here. It is hoped that golden eagles may finally return to the north of England, and if all goes well, numbers should grow steadily. 24.Why will some golden eagles be set free from south of Edinburgh? A.To keep the balance of nature B.To prevent eagles from dying out C.To bring back the number of other species D.To encourage more birds to live in the wild 25.Which word can replace the underlined word“reared”in Paragraph 2? A.Raised B.Stored C.Sold D.Exhibited 26.What does Paragraph 4 focus on ? A.Harmful effects of shooting birds B.Why animal hunting should be forbidden C.Reasons for golden eagles’ dying out D.The difficult situation golden eagles face 27.What is the author’s attitude towards the golden eagle project? A.Ambiguous B.Cautious C.Doubtful D.Hopeful C Since the sex of a sea turtle(海龟)is determined by the heat of sand hatching the eggs, scientists had suspected they might see slightly more females. Climate change, after all, has driven sea temperatures higher, which, in these creatures, favors female children. They found female sea turtles from Raine Island, the Pacific Ocean’s largest and most important green sea turtle living area, now outnumber males by at least 116 to 1. “This is extreme,”says turtle scientist Camryn Allen. Biologist Michael Jensen wanted to know if climate change had already changed turtles’ sexes. By using genetic (基因的)tests, he’d figured out that he could follow turtles of all ages. Still, his research data would lack and important detail: sex. Only after a turtle matures is it possible to tell its sex from the outside—mature males have slightly longer tails. By then turtles can be decades old, so scientists often use laparoscopy(腹腔镜检查),sending a thin tube into each animal, but that’s not so practical if you’re hoping to examine hundreds of creature. Fortunately, at a turtle conference, he met Allen, and all she needed was a little blood. They compared their results with temperature data for nesting beaches. What worries them is that Raine Island has been producing almost female turtles for at least 20 years. This is no small thing. More than 200,000 turtles come to nest there. During high season, 18,000 turtles may settle in at once. “But what happens in 20 years when there are no more males coming up as adults? Are there enough to maintain the population?”says Allen. They also found cooler beaches in the south are still producing males,, but that in the north, it’s almost entirely females hatching. these findings clearly point to the fact that climate change is changing many aspects of wildlife biology. But how widespread is this phenomenon-and what is the consequence? 28.How might the scientists feel if there were slightly more female turtles? A.It’s unique B.It’s normal C.It’s extreme D.It’s doubtful 29.What is a scientist’s conventional way to identify a turtle’s sex? A.Using laparoscopy B.Doing genetic tests C.Testing its blood D.Watching its tail 30.Why do the findings worry Jensen and Allen? A.Too many females gather near Raine Island B.Female turtles cause temperatures to rise C.Turtle populations are in decline D.Sea turtles may end up dying out 31.What does the last paragraph imply? A.People have to test the consequence B.People should stop the phenomenon C.More work needs doing about the phenomenon D.Climate change has changed sea turtles’ sexes D Researchers at the University of California, Irvine(UCI) found between 1965 and 2012, all but one of 11 Western nations showed an increase in the amount of time both parents spent with their children. The exception was France. The subject pool included 122,271 parents in Canada, the U.K, the U.S., Denmark, Norway, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Slovenia between the ages of 18 and 65 with at least one child younger than 13. The 68,532 mothers and 53,739 fathers kept a journal of their daily activities. While mothers in 1965 might have spent more time at home with children, they only spent 54 minutes on child care activities, according to the study. Mothers in 2012 nearly doubled that, reporting 104 minutes per day. Fathers' time with children nearly quadrupled(变成四倍) since 1965, when dads reported spending 16 minutes with children. In 2012, dads spent an average of 59 minutes caring for children. Time spent with children includes preparing food, feeding, bathing, changing diapers and clothes, preparing for bedtime, reading, playing, and helping with homework. Within the 2012 data, researchers found parents with a college education spend much more time with children compared to parents without a college degree. The study's findings shocked the study co-author Judith Treas, UCI’s Professor of sociology. “According to economic theory, higher wages should discourage well-educated parents from quitting work to spend extra time with youngsters,” she said in a statement. “Also, they have the money to pay others to care for their children.” However, the fact is that they manage to spare as much time as they can for their children. Treas said the trend might be due to “intensive parenting,” the idea that time spent with children is critical for development. 32.What did the study mainly find? A.Parents worked outside more to support family B.More Western parents ignored their children C.Parents spent more time with their children D.French parents were especially devoted to their children 33.What did the study say about fathers compared with mothers? A.They focused more on work B.They preferred work to child care C.They spent more time with children D.They changed more than mothers 34.How did Treas find the study’s findings? A.Pioneering B.Surprising C.Doubtful D.Reasonable 35.Which saying can conclude the last paragraph? A.You can have your cake and eat it too B.Parents are the first teachers of children C.The mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom D.What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soul 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Self-confident people are admired by others and inspire confidence in others. 36 It would be amazing to have this kind of self-confidence. Stay away from negativity(消极性)and bring on the positivity. This is the time to evaluate yourself, including friends and family. This is a tough one, but it’s time to seriously consider getting away from those individuals who put you down. 37 Stop focusing on the problems in your life. Instead, begin to focus on solutions and making positive changes. Change your body language and image. 38 A simple act of pulling your shoulders back gives others the impression that you are a confident person. Research has proved that those who take the time to speak slowly and clearly feel more self-confidence and appear more self-confident to others. 39 Never give up. Never accept failure. Believe that there is a solution to everything. Low self-confidence is often caused by the negative thoughts running through our minds. If you are constantly saying you’re not good enough, aren’t attractive enough and on and on, you are creating a self-fulfilling prediction. The next time you hear that negativity in your head, switch it immediately to a positive opinion. For tough times: create a great list. Life is full of challenges and there are times when it’s difficult to keep our self-confidence up. Sit down and make a list of all the things in your life that you are thankful for. 40 Once your lists are complete, post them somewhere where you can easily be reminded of what an amazing life you have and what an amazing person you really are. A.Get rid of the negative voices in your head. B.Failure is surely a necessary part in everybody’s life. C.This is where smiling, eye contact, and slow speech count. D.You can deal with difficulties or challenges in a positive way E.They often see lives in a positive way even when things don’t go well. F.Make another list of all the things that you are proud of accomplishing. G.Put some positive enthusiasm into your communication with other people. When twelve-year-old John Wilson walked into his chemistry class on a rainy day in late October 1931, he had no way of knowing that his life was about to change completely. Indeed, the number of foreign tourists in China is sharply increasing, which causes a big concern. While they are enjoying the beautiful scenery, some of them behave rudely . how to be a civilized tourist has become a heated topic. Personally, I think it’s necessary for them to mind their manners. First of all, they’d better respect ad follow local customs. As a famous saying goes. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”Besides, it’s impolite of them to talk loudly and rudely in public places, which will certainly leave a bad impression on Chinese people. What’s the most important is that the environment should be protected. Therefore, throwing rubbish, spitting and jumping the queue and so on are not allowed. Only in this way can they enjoy their trip and have happy memories as well. Thanks for reading. Yours truly, Li Hua 查看更多
