B When I was about ten years old, I was walking down the street with my mother. She stopped to speak to Mr. Lee, and I knew I could see Mr. Lee any time around the neighborhood, so I didn’t pay any attention to him. After we passed Mr. Lee, my mother stopped me and said something that has stuck with me from that day until now. She said,“You let that be the last time you’ve ever walked by somebody and not opened up your mouth to speak, because even a dog will wag its tail when it passes you on the street.” Mother’s words sound simple, but it’s been a guidepost for me and the foundation of who I am. It’s not just something I believe in; it’s become a way of life. I believe that every person deserves to feel someone acknowledge their presence, no matter how humble(卑微的) they may be. At work, I always said hello to the founder of the company and asked him how our business was doing. But I also spoke to the people who cleaned the buildings and asked how their children were doing. After a few years of greeting the founder, I had the courage to ask him for a meeting. We had a great talk. At a certain point I asked him how far he thought I could go in his company .He said, “If you want to, you can get all the way to this seat.” I’ve become vice president, but that hasn’t changed the way I approach people. I still follow my mother’s advice. I speak to everyone I see, no matter where I am. I’ve learned that speaking to people creates a pathway into their world, and it allows them to come into mine, too. 24.What did the author do when he met Mr. Lee? A.He talked with somebody else. B.He was attracted by a dog. C.He greeted him politely. D.He ignored him. 25.What kind of person is the author’s mother? A.Optimistic. B.Kindhearted. C.Strict. D.Open-minded. 26.How did the company founder reply to the author? A.He played a joke. B.He inspired him. C.He invited him to coffee. D.He gave him the seat. 27.What does the author think of saying hello to people? A.It can build connections with others. B.It’s a way to show sympathy to humble people. C.It’s a must to become a president. D.It can bring him what he wants. C Warford is an optometrist (验光师) in Florida. He has seen an increase in “computer vision syndrome(电脑视力综合症)”in children. “A lot more children come into the office either because their parents have noticed that they have headaches or red or watery eyes or discomfort, or because their nearsightedness appears to be increasing and they’re worried,” he says. Dr. Watford says part of the problem is that children may be more likely to pay no attention to early warning signs than adults. “Even if their eyes start to feel uncomfortable or they start to get a headache, they’re less likely to tell their parents, because they don’t want to have the game or whatever taken away,” he explains. He says another part of the problem is that people blink(眨眼)less often when they use digital devices. He says, “A person who uses an electronic device blinks about one third as much as we normally do in everyday life. And that can result in the front part of the eye drying and not staying protected like normal.” Eye doctors offer suggestions like the 20/20/20 rule. That means every twenty minutes look away twenty feet or more for at least twenty seconds from whatever device you’re using. Other suggestions include using good lighting and spending less time looking at screens. Many experts say children should spend no more than two hours a day using digital devices—with no screen time for children under two. But not all eye doctors have noticed an increase in problems in children. Dr. David Hunter, for instance, says, “While it is possible to develop fatigue looking at screens for a long time, there’s certainly no proof that it actually causes any damage to the eyes.” 28.Which of the following is true according to the passage? A.Dr. Warford thinks using computers causes nearsightedness. B.People keep their eyes protected against drying by blinking normally. C.The 20/20/20 rule doesn’t apply to all the devices you are using. D.Children under two can watch TV for less than two hours a day. 29.The syndrome in children is more likely serious than in adults because ________. A.adults are cleverer than children B.adults ignore taking care of children C.children always overlook early warning signs D.children always forget their parents’ words 30.What does the underlined word “fatigue” mean in the last paragraph? A.Interest. B.Ability. C.Tiredness. D.Difficulty. 31. Which of the following shows the structure of the text? A. ① B. ① C. ① D. ①[] ②③④⑤⑥ ② ③ ②③④⑤ ② ③ ④ ⑤ ⑥ ⑥ ④ ⑤ 注:① - ⑥ 指paragragh 1 to 6 ⑥ D Organic(有机的) food is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice as much for goods with organic labels(商标). However, a study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren’t necessarily more nutritious. “We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier,” says Dr. Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford. “So consumers shouldn’t assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer.” For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats. Researchers found that neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria(细菌) at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. The U.S. Department of Agriculture(USDA) states that “whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste.” Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic. 32. The new research questions whether organic food __________. A. should replace traditional food B. has been overpriced by farmers C. is grown with less harmful chemicals D. is really more nutritious and healthier 33. Smith-Spangler and her colleagues found that ___________. A. organic food could reduce the risk of heart disease B. traditional food was grown with more natural methods C. both organic and traditional food they examined were safe D. there was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food 34. Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage? A. Organic chicken and pork. B. Organic milk and chicken. C. Traditional chicken and pork. D. Traditional fruit and vegetables. 35. What is the author’s attitude toward organic food? A. Skeptical. B. Neutral. C. Unconcerned. D. We are in a fast-paced, technologically evolving society and we are addicted to social media. 36 So how does one ensure a positive online reputation? It’s simple: Keep it clean. Party photos with alcohol are an absolute no-no. Would you want to have your boss see these photos? 37 Make sure to post contents that you feel positively reflect you, your creativity and your skills. 38 You have a private Twitter account so you can post anything you want? This is decidedly not the case. Privacy settings make it harder to see your full account, but it’s not impossible. Under no circumstance should you rely on privacy settings as a way to protect inappropriate contents. Ensure you’re careful and professional. Keep it classy (优等的)! Discover your brand, or what you want people to think of you. Proper spelling and grammar is always a plus, but it may not be your brand. 39 In this way, you can earn approval. Follow these simple rules and you’re on your way to building, or restoring an online reputation. Using social media positively doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and use it to express yourself; however, you want to ensure that you’re OK with anyone seeing everything you post. 40 So your post can get your friends active and happy. Like it or not, your social networks reflect you ── make sure you look like the shining star that you truly are. A. Try to do everything as well as you can. B. In fact, we long for social media and need it. C. Social media is very fast to use but very difficult. D. Don’t trust privacy settings at all. E. Be entirely sure about what you’re posting. F. Once you click post, there’s no looking back. G.
