I am now 27 and cannot ever remember being afraid of flying until I was around 20. Suddenly, it seemed to come from nowhere. I began to be afraid of flying. Two weeks before I was to fly I would have nightmares every night, all of which were centered on a plane crash. This would obviously add to my anxieties. The turning point for me was when I had to go on a business trip to Germany. My boss and my husband were with me, but nobody was allowed to talk to me. I was quiet and on the verge of (濒于) tears right up until boarding. On the flight I was even worse. I was crying, shaking and my palm were sweaty. It sounds so ridiculous, but if you have a fear of flying you will understand my distress. I got home and my fear was getting out of control. It was upsetting for my husband when we were going on holidays together. I would never be excited because I didn't want to fly as I was certain the plane would crash, or we would be hijacked, or there would be a bomb on board, etc. I thought about paying for expensive hypnotism (催眠术) to see if that would help me but I also wanted to try and help myself first. That was when I found this book. I read the book as soon as it arrived. It answered the questions I had. After that, when I had a flight coming up, I read a few chapters of the book every night for 2 weeks before the flight. I also took the book in my hand luggage so it was there to refer to if I felt fearful during a flight. This book is AMAZING and a MUST-HAVE for any nervous flyer. 21. We know from Paragraph 1 that the author ______ . A. has been a pilot for over 20 years so far B. has accumulated some flying experience C. has been aware of her fear of flying recently D. has been afraid of flying for about seven years 22. The underlined word “distress” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________. A. boredom B. suffering C. calmness D. interest 23. The writer’s fear of flying results from ________. A. her worries about flight safety B. her doubt about the crew C. her fear of strangers D. her sensitive body 24. The author writes the text in order to ______ . A. show how terrible the fear of flying is B. give advice on how to beat the fear of flying C. persuade the readers to stay away from planes D. recommend a book to those who are afraid of flying B The middle class in the US has certainly changed. A vacation is an extra expense that many middle earners cannot afford without losing something else. A survey found that this year 54% of people gave up buying big ticket items like TVs or electronics so they could go on a vacation. Others did things like reducing or eliminating (排除) their trips to the movies (47%) and trips out to restaurants (43%), or avoiding buying small ticket items like new clothes (43%). Interest.com recently analyzed the prices of new cars and trucks, as well as the median (中等的) incomes across more than two dozen major cities, and found that new cars and trucks were simply not affordable to most middle earners. Mike Sante, Interest.com’s editor reminds us, “Just because you can manage the monthly payment doesn’t mean you should let a $30,000 or $40,000 ride use up such a huge share of your paycheck.” Our debt is growing faster than our income, and many middle-class workers have trouble paying off the debt. Money-Zine.com evaluated debt growth and income growth over the past few decades and found that “back in 1980, the consumer credit per person was $1,540, which was 7.3% of the average household income of $21,100. In 2013, the consumer debt was $9,800 per person, which was 13.4% of the average household income of $72,600.” To provide ourselves with a degree of financial security, we are supposed to have emergency savings to protect ourselves in the event of job loss, illness, and so on. Most members of the middle class don’t have even six months of emergency savings, and some working people have no such savings. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, “the US spends about $64 billion each year on oral health care — just 4 percent is paid by the government programs.” About 108 million middle earners in the US have no dental insurance and even those who are covered may have trouble getting the care they need, the department reports. 25. According to the survey, in order to enjoy a vacation, many middle earners have to ______ . A. work much harder than before B. sell some of their expensive items C. give up buying or enjoying something D. borrow some money to cover the expenses 26. What Mike Sante says mainly shows that ______. A. trucks in more than 24 major cities sell quite well B. the prices of cars in the US have grown up too fast C. the monthly payment for cars is not too high for middle earners D. middle earners shouldn’t spend too much money on cars or trucks 27. The fourth paragraph is developed mainly ______. A. by analyzing causes B. by giving descriptions C. by following time order D. by making comparisons 28. The last paragraph shows that some middle earners have trouble ______ . A. paying off their debts B. getting the dental care C. saving money for emergencies D. getting cash from the government C Clare College Cambridge Clare is the second oldest college in Cambridge University, having initially been founded in 1326 and refounded by Elizabath de Clare in 1338. Known as Koro, it appears to be different from other languages in the family to which it belongs; but it is also under threat. Koro was discovered by a team of linguists on an expedition to Arunachal Pradesh, in north-eastern India. The team was part of National Geographic’s “Enduring Voices” project on threatened native languages. The researchers were searching for two other little-known languages spoken only in one small area. As they heard and recorded these, they found a third which was completely new to them and had never before been listed. “We didn’t have to get far on our word list to realize it was extremely different in every possible way,” said Dr David Harrison, one of the expedition leaders. The linguists recorded thousands of words and found Koro was different from other languages in the area. It belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family, which includes around 150 languages spoken in India. But scientists were unable to find any others closely related to Koro within this group. It is thought that around half of the world’s 6,909 known languages are endangered and Koro itself is vulnerable. It has never been written down and is only spoken by between 800 and 1,200 people. “We were finding something that was making its exit, was on its way out,” said National Geographic Fellow Gregory Anderson, “And if we had waited 10 years to make the trip, we might not have come across close to the number of speakers we found.” The team will be returning to India next month to continue their research on Koro. They want to find out more about where it came from and how it was able to remain hidden until now. 32. How did they find Koro? A. By making a detailed plan before getting into it. B. By accident. C. By including it into the “Enduring Voices” project. D. By aimless exploration. 33. How many family members does Koro have? A. 150. B. 800. C. 1201. D. 6,909. 34. What does the underlined sentence mean? A. They should wait 10 years to get more information about the language. B. They had spend 10 years in doing nothing. C. Even they had spent 10 years researching this language, they got nothing. D. They probably won’t get any information useful after 10 years. 35. Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A. A language, spoken by few people B. Rare languages, to keep or to lose C. Study on a rare language D. How we manage the holidays may have as much to do with our expectations as our resources. 36 Imagine this: your neighbours are throwing a holiday party and they’ve asked you to make all of the desserts. 37 Although you would rather relax at home with your family, you feel a sense of obligation to please others. In situations like this, take a step back and remember that you’re not a superman or superwoman. Don’t let “supposed to do” take the place of what you would like to do.
