A Despite being used by 1.34 billion people each year, traveling on the Tube in London can actually be quite lonely. An unwritten rule encouraging silence, mixed with classic British reserve, means that even though you’re packed into enclosed space with hundreds of other people, the morning trip can leave you feeling somewhat lonely. One London resident, however, is trying to change this. "You get on the Tube here and it’s completely silent and it’s strange," says Jonathan Dunne, an American living in London, who has started a campaign of giving out badges (徽章) with the slogan "Tube Chat?" last month, encouraging travelers in London to get talking to one another. Although Dunne says he’s received mostly positive responses, there are always exceptions. Londoner Brian Wilson responded with a campaign of his own, handing out 500 badges with the words "Don’t even think about it" on them. "I can’t stand the idea of having to talk to strangers on the Tube on my way to work," he said. Michael Robinson, a student from London, agrees. "Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet some people get on their journeys to and from work. It doesn’t need to be spoiled by people coming up and chatting to you," he says. "People assume that I just walk up and talk to strangers, which I don’t, but it’s been a great way to meet people you would never have normally spoken to," Dunne says. So if you ever end up using public transport in London, why not say hello to the person next to you? Just make sure to check for a badge first. 1. Which partly leads to the silence on the Tube in London? A. The government’s rule. B. People’s desire for quiet. C. British people’s personality. D. Awareness of personal privacy. 2. What can the badge with "Tube Chat?" be seen as? A. A request for keeping silent. B. A special way of greeting someone. C. A signal of avoiding being disturbed. D. An encouragement to start a conversation. 3. Why does the author mention Brian and Michael? A. To stress the importance of communication. B. To show not everyone agrees with Dunne’s idea. C. To prove Londoners are speechless on the Tube. D. To state the disadvantages of chatting with strangers. 4. What’s the best title for the passage? A. Please mind the silence on the Tube! B. Time to change your way to take the subway! C. What makes people feel lonely on the Tube? D. Why was the "Tube Chat?" campaign not a success? B When Seattle-based poet Heather McHugh won $500,000 from the MacArthur Foundation, she didn’t buy a Maserati or fly to Paris. Instead, she put the money in the bank and continued teaching college courses and writing poetry. It wasn’t until about two years later, in 2011, that she finally figured out what to do with it. She discovered there are millions of caregivers in the United States taking care of the chronically(长期地) ill or disabled. "It’s a heartbreaking contract of love," she says. So in 2012, Heather formed Caregifted, a non-profit organization that offers a seven-day, all-expenses-paid vacation to Vancouver Island to people who have been caregivers for at least ten years. "It’s hard physical, psychological, and emotional work. It’s clear they deserve and need a respite," she says. Tricia Elsner, a single mother of 19-year-old triplet(三胞胎中的一个) boys, two of them with severe illness, was one of the first caregivers to go on vacation, in 2013. When Tricia got a phone call saying Caregifted wanted to send her to Eastport, Maine, she "couldn’t believe" someone would pay for her to go on a vacation; disbelief gave way to concern about her sons. But after two days away, the worry was gone. "After being in Maine by myself, with nobody to take care of or think about except myself, I realized that rock was gone," says Tricia. She was afraid the heaviness would return when the week was over, but to her surprise, it hasn’t been back since. Heather says, "Everybody needs restorative time. For some, it’s life-extending." Tricia and the other guests aren’t the only ones to benefit from Caregifted; Heather has too. "I thought I was the queen of love, being a poet," Heather says. "But I didn’t know a thing about love until I met these people." 5. Whom is Caregifted intended for? A. The disabled. B. The kids. C. The caregivers. D. The patients. 6. What does the underlined word "respite" in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. reward B. rest C. job D. promotion 7. How did Tricia feel after staying in Maine for two days? A. Concerned. B. Relieved. C. Excited. D. Doubtful. 8. What does the last paragraph suggest? A. People benefit when they give. B. Poets are full of love and helpful. C. Caregifted is life-extending. D. Heather once lacked love. satisfied"确信的,满意的";pleased"高兴的";proud"自豪的"。 recover"恢复健康";function"起作用"。 15. struggle" 挣扎,奋斗";fail"失败"。 16. 17. The next day, I went to her mother to ask about it. She seemed at first. And then she told me they yet made any decision about her mother to live with them. " speaking, my husband and my mother have never got on well. We’ll wait a bit and see what happens." Therefore, was no need for me to move. Now, six have passed and I’m still living in basement room. 第二处: what→which。 第五处: come→coming。 wait for后应接宾语,而此处a bit用作副词,修饰动词wait,故for多余。 第八处: it→there。 there is no need (for sb.) to do sth. 第十处: a→the。 Hello, everyone! I’d like to spend a few minutes in this class meeting introducing an English-English dictionary to you. First and foremost, it has a large vocabulary, with more than 1,000 new words added, which is indeed a help to us. As the explanations of the words are of great accuracy, it will be easy for us to understand and we will have a better understanding of a certain word. Moreover, the usages of the words are listed in detail, with many vivid examples. And I really appreciate these examples, for they can give me an authentic taste of this language. Still, the variety of the structures used in the example sentences benefits me greatly. All in all, this dictionary really serves as a good tool for my English study. I strongly recommend you have one. Thank you for listening.
