B Beautiful people tend to have a lot more luck in the work world. Research has shown attractive people get paid more, receive better job evaluations and are generally more employable. It’s even been shown that good-looking CEOs bring better stock returns for their companies. In part, this may be because companies believe consumers are more likely to buy things from beautiful employees, which is perhaps why companies like Abercrombie & Fitch have used looks as criteria in their hiring process. There’s some evidence, however, that this worker “beauty premium(优待)” may be wearing off(消逝)--at least when it comes to employees who interact with consumers. In television commercials, for example, companies are increasingly using real people--with all their physical flaws—rather than photoshopped models to give their brands an “authentic” feel. A recent research suggests that companies may be wise to take this approach with customers. Our studies show occasions where the “beauty premium” doesn’t hold—and can even backfire. Beauty can create distance. In our recent study, we wanted to better understand how consumers respond to attractive service employees. We invited 309 college students to be served to dinner at a restaurant. We then asked participants to rate the attractiveness of the server and how “psychologically close” they felt to him or her. Participants also graded customer satisfaction, the service quality and the likability of the waiter on a scale from low to high. We found that how close a consumer felt toward the waiter related with how they rated the quality of service they received. That is, if they felt distance from the waiter, they were more likely to give him or her poor marks. Furthermore, we found that people who saw themselves as less good-looking felt more distance from an attractive waiter and were also more likely to perceive(察觉) the service as lower quality. So, in a world that admires and hires beautiful people, our research suggests there’s a potential downside, at least in the service sector. 24. Why do companies consider beauty important in hiring process? A. Pretty people often bring good luck to the company. B. Attractive persons are generally more employable. C. Good-looking workers make the consumers feel close. D. Beautiful employees are believed to bring better sales. 25. What does the underlined word “flaws” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Shortcomings. B. Advantages. C. Beauties. D. Features. 26. What has the recent study found about attractive service? A. The participants gave high marks to the attractive employees. B. Unattractive consumers often prefer beautiful employees. C. Beautiful waiters can usually make consumers feel distance. D. Attractive workers can make consumers feel psychologically closer. 27. What is the best title for the text? A. Consumers’ Opinions about Beauty of Employees B. Beauty Doesn’t Always Win in the Workplace C. Be Beautiful—You Will Lose Consumers D. Beauty--Your Advantage at Job Fairs C A hand-shaped robot, called “Pepe”, which encourages kids to wash their hands has helped pupils at a remote Indian primary school take a fresh approach to hygiene(卫生). Pepe was fixed on the wall above a hand-washing station at Wayanad Government Primary School in Kerala, which has about 100 pupils aged between 5 and 10. A small video screen behind the green plastic Pepe acted as a “mouth”, allowing researchers to tele-operate the robot to speak to the pupils and draw their attention to a poster outlining the steps of effective hand-washing. A set of moving “eyes” helped Pepe pay attention to the children’s actions. The robot helped pupils wash their hands more effectively and more consistently, increasing their rates of hand-washing by 40 percent. Pupils spent on average twice as long washing their hands after Pepe’s arrival. After the intervention(介入), more than 95 percent of the students could correctly determine when hand-washing with soap has to be done—before a meal and after a visit to the toilet. Hand-washing is one of the most effective defenses against the spread of diarrhea(痢疾)and respiratory(呼吸的)infections, which cause the deaths of around 1, 300 young children each day around the world--320 of which are in India alone, according to figures from WaterAid India and the World Health Organization. Dr. Amol Deshmukh, from the University of Glasgow’s School of Computing Science, 1ed the project in partnership with colleagues from Amrita University. He said. “We were delighted by the Success of Pepe’s visit to this primary school. The children were excited to interact with this relatively simple machine, which clearly had a positive effect on their efforts to keep their hands clean. ” Dr. Rao R. Bhavani from Amrita University said, “AMMACHI(Amrita Multi Modal Applications and Computer Human Interaction)Labs have taken multiple initiatives to address common challenges facing low-income rural communities in India and worldwide using technology. ” 28. Why is hand-shaped robot “Pepe” fixed at Wayanad Government Primary School? A. To spy on pupils’ daily actions. B. To wash children’s hands on time. C. To fresh the school environment. D. Where is this text most likely taken from? A. A science report. B. An advertisement. C. A science fiction. D. A guidebook. D Coral reefs(珊瑚礁)—great, silent underwater ecosystems—are wellsprings (源泉) of marine life, protectors of coastlines and anchors of a vast, global food chain. And they are on the front lines as our planet warms. Unfortunately, for decades, the world’s coral reefs have been suffering overfishing, pollution and habitat destruction. And the main enemy is global warming. Now, however, a handful of scientists are taking supreme measures to try to save them. Though many of the solutions seem as if they’re from some science fiction novel, the devotion of these coral experts to saving their reefs is inspiring. There are teams trying to brighten clouds so they reflect more sunlight back to space, others who want to apply floating sunscreen to acres of ocean surface. There are robots programmed to hunt and kill coral predators and groups searching the globe for “super corals” or attempting to breed them. There are proposals to pump cold water up from the ocean depths to lower the temperature of shallow coral, cover reefs with massive floating shade structures and even pulse sickly reefs with electrical currents to speed their growth. Some teams are looking for “super corals” that have evolved to grow happily in naturally hotter areas such as volcanic vents, coastal woods, even the Persian Gulf. Many of the scientists working on these imaginative remedies(解决方法)admit the ideas seem crazy. In fact, some of those involved with the coral rescue projects today described them as “silly” “ridiculous” or “out there” just a few years ago. But coral reefs are collapsing so fast that many scientists have shifted into extreme rescue mode. The work on remedies is moving quickly, too, which has caused some alarm. In Australia, environmental lawyers are waving their arms trying to get project leaders to think about regulation. environmental impact and community involvement before projects progress further. 32. Why did coral scientists take these measures? A. To conduct a scientific research. B. To protect underwater ecosystem. C. To apply high—tech to coral reefs. D. To test if their ideas are practical. 33. What does the underlined word “supreme” probably mean? A. Extreme. B. Safe. C. Preventive. D. abundant. 34. What can we infer from scientists’ work? A. It turns out to be a huge Success. B. We should be cautious about it. C. It has caused serious problems. D. It is widely involved and supported. 35. What is the main idea of the text? A. Coral is the key to the entire ecosystem. B. Creativity helps protect coral reefs effectively. C. We should apply technology to environment protection. D. Here’s my advice on how to nail the most common interview question. Most people are so eager to show off what they’ve been involved in. Don’t worry, and there will be time for that. The interviewer has reviewed your resume and will ask you plenty about your expertise. “Tell me about yourself” is a question you’re certain to be asked at any job interview. 36 . However, sharing something that shows who you really are beyond a piece of paper is a good idea. It will allow the interviewer to know something about your life outside of work. Everyone has something interesting to share about themselves. I've heard people talk about everything from being a world-class sushi chef to an ice carver. 37 . Such as you participate in competitive sports, you’re an accomplished(技艺高超的)pianist and you’re writing your first detective novel. If the information showcases a unique aspect of yourself, and especially if you can link it to what you can bring to your next job, then go for it. Another way to think about the question is:“What gets you up every morning?’’ The person also wants to know what your sense of passion and purpose is. That volunteer work on a farm cooperative in South America, for example, shows you have a global perspective. 38 . It doesn’t matter how big or small the accomplishment is, as long as it shows you’re struggling to improve yourself. When people are motivated by contributing to something bigger than themselves, they get more satisfaction. 39 . Relax, be yourself and tell the truth. Don’t approach the interview like you’re trying out for Broadway. It’s more than obvious when someone is trying to memorize their lines and “play the part”. Also, if you overstate what you’ve done or fully invent a story about yourself, you’ll be exposed. 40 . A. Take a risk to get personal B. Too many people respond to it by giving a recital of their resume C. Running your first 10 kilometers shows you like a challenge D. Showing honesty is one of the most important things E. And then everything you say about yourself will be questioned F. It’s also important to tell it in a way that makes you memorable G. “Tell me about yourself” is an invitation for you to share some brief personal information 第三部分 语言知识运用 (共两节, 满分45分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分, 满分30分) Two teenage girls have been honoured by the Indian government after it was discovered that they had pretended to be boys for four years to run their father’s barber’s when he became too ill to work.
