For many years we lived next door to each other, and she spent as much time in my garden as she did in her own. After the flowers became plentiful each summer, she would cut colorful bouquets( 花束 ) to enjoy inside the house—both hers and mine. I would often come home from work and find a beautiful arrangement(布置) of fresh flowers on my coffee table. Shortly before Christmas one year, a local flower shop offered a bouquet-a-month special. It seemed to be a great way to thank her for all of the flowers she had given me through the years. After the holidays, in early January, I drove her to the flower shop to pick up her first month’s bouquet. The small fresh colorful bouquet would hardly fill a small vase(花瓶). I was so embarrassed(尴尬的). However, after we returned home, she began to arrange the flowers she had received. “Mom, I’m sorry,” I told her. “I can’t believe how skimpy that bouquet is.” She looked at me and smiled. “It’s okay,” she said. “It allows me to better enjoy the beauty of each one.” Mom’s words helped me to realize something bigger and more important—when we have too many good things, we often fail to enjoy the beauty of each one. Thanks, Mom, for helping me understand that less is sometimes more. 24. The author bought her mother flowers to ______. A. celebrate the coming Christmas B. express thanks for all her mother’s done C. arrange her mother’s new house D. bring more flowers to her mother’s garden 25. What did the author learn from her mother? A. How to grow flowers B. How to arrange flowers C. Considering things in other ways D. Enjoying life if possible C Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees' nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper — a little bird called a honey guide. The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees' nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share. Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit. 28. Why is it difficult to find a wild bees' nest? A. It's small in size. B. It's hidden in trees. C. It's covered with wax. D. It's hard to recognize. 29. What do the words "the follower" in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. A bee. B. A bird. C. A honey seeker. D. A beekeeper. 30. The honey guide is special in the way _______. A. it gets its food B. it goes to church C. it sings in the forest D. it reaches into bees' nests 31. What can be the best title for the text? A. Wild Bees B. Wax and Honey C. Beekeeping in Africa D. Honey-Lover's Helper D How is it that siblings (兄弟姐妹) can turn out so differently? One answer is that in fact each sibling grows up in a different family. The firstborn is, for a while, an only child, and therefore has a completely different experience of the parents than those born later. The next child is, for a while, the youngest, until t he situation is changed by a new arrival. The mother and father themselves are changing and growing up too. One sibling might live in a stable and close family in the first few years; another might be raised in a family crisis, with a disappointed mother or an angry father. Sibling competition was identified as an important shaping force as early as in 1918. But more recently, researchers have found many ways in which brothers and sisters are a lasting force in each others’ lives. Dr. Annette Henderson says firstborn children pick up vocabulary more quickly than their siblings. The reason for this might be that the later children aren’t getting the same one-on-one time with parents. But that doesn’t mean that the younger children have problems with language development. Later-borns don’t enjoy that much talking time with parents, but instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sisters, learning entire phrases and getting an understanding of social concepts such as the difference between “I” and “me”. A Cambridge University study of 140 children found that siblings created a rich world of play that helped them grow socially. Love-hate relationships were common among the children. Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much positive communication as the other sibling pairs. One way children seek more attention from parents is by making themselves different from their siblings, particularly if they are close in age. Researchers have found that the first two children in a family are typically more different from each other than the second and third. Girls with brothers show their differences to a maximum degree by being more feminine than girls with sisters. A 2003 research paper studied adolescents from 185 families over two years, finding that those who changed to make themselves different from their siblings were successful in increasing the amount of warmth they gained from their parents. 32. The underlined part “in a different family” (in Para. 1) means “_______”. A. in a different family environment B. in a different family tradition C. in different family crises D. in different families 33. In terms of language development, later-borns ________. A. get their parents’ individual guidance B. learn a lot from their elder siblings C. experience a lot of difficulties D. pick up words more quickly 34. What was found about fights among siblings? A. Siblings hated fighting and loved playing. A. Siblings in some families fought frequently. B. Sibling fights led to bad sibling relationships. C. Siblings learned to get on together from fights. 35. The word “feminine” (in Para. 4) means “_______”. Well, I can tell you for sure that those people who are really happy, FEAR less and LOVE a lot more. They see each moment, each challenge, each person as an opportunity to discover more about themselves and the world around them. 37 Happy people understand that you can’t really change a situation by resisting(反抗)it. But they can feel better by understanding that there might be a reason for its existence(存在). 38 But rather, they ask themselves questions like: What can I learn from this? How can I make this better? They always seem to be pleasant and hopeful no matter what happens to them. They do the things they do because of the meaning it brings into their lives and because they get a sense of purpose by doing so. 39 They care more about living a life full of meaning rather than, what in our modern society we would call, living a successful life. The fact here is that most of the time they get both, success and meaning, just because they choose to focus on doing the things they love the most. 40 They make sure that their actions bring meaning and happiness in the lives of many. They look for ways to give and to share the best of themselves with the world and to make other people happy. A. They have an ideal living and a balanced life. B. What are the things that these people do differently? C. They are kind to themselves and others and they understand the power of love. D. The things happy people do are not for themselves, but for the good of others. E. They are ready to embrace whatever lies in front of them. F.
