Lie down with one hand hanging over the bed holding a spoon above the plate. When you fall asleep, the spoon will fall on the plate and should wake you up. If you don’t wake up until the next day, it probably means you are “sleep- deprived (睡眠不足的)”.‎ We live in a world of sleep-deprived people. This is the the theory of behavioral biologist, Paul Martin who wrote the book Counting Sheep. We all know the importance of having a ‎ healthy diet and doing exercise, but we don’t worry enough about sleeping the hours we need. Paul Martin says, “We might live longer and happier lives if we took our beds as seriously as our running shoes.”‎ Modern society has invented reasons not to sleep. We are now a society where shops must be open all hours. Mobile phones allow us to stay in touch round the clock. Until the invention of electric light people would get up with the sun and go to bed at nightfall. But nowadays our hours of sleep are mainly determined by our working hours. During the day, caffeine helps to keep us awake.‎ What does a long-term lack of sleep do to us? Human error (过失) caused by tiredness contributed to the worst nuclear (核能的) accident in history at Chernobyl in 1986. On our roads, lack of sleep kills thousands of people every year. Tests show that a tired driver can be just as dangerous as a drunk driver. As Paul Martin says, it is very ironic (讽刺的) that we admire people who work on very little sleep instead of criticizing them for being irresponsible. Our world would be a much safer, happier place if everyone slept eight hours a night.‎ ‎24. Why does the author mention the test in the first paragraph?‎ A. To introduce the topic of sleep deprivation.‎ B. To show people can sleep soundly with noise.‎ C. To explain the theory of Paul Martin.‎ D. To stress the importance of sleep.‎ ‎25. What does Paul Martin say about sleeping?‎ A. It has a close relationship with diets.‎ B. It is a good way to treat some illnesses.‎ C. It is less important than exercising.‎ D. It is worth our attention.‎ ‎26. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?‎ A. Modern society increases the risk of loneliness.‎ B. Modern society sees fast workforce (劳动力) growth.‎ C. Lack of sleep is related to life habits.‎ D. Sleep problems mainly result from stress.‎ ‎27. What can we learn about people sleeping less?‎ A. They fail to perform well in their work.‎ B. They are responsible in their daily life.‎ C. They can hardly change their attitudes to work.‎ D. They are often praised for their hard work.‎ C Can you think of a day without music? We can hear music everywhere: in the streets and at home, over the radio and on TV, in the shops and in the parks. People all over the world are fond of music. They listen to music, they dance to music, and they learn to play musical instruments (乐器).‎ Music isn’t only a combination (结合) of pleasant sounds. It is an art which reflects (反映) life. There are a lot of different kinds of music. Some of them appeared long ago, and some are modern. Folk music appeared long ago, but it is still alive. Folk songs are very pleasant to listen to. Classical music is often associated (关联) with the music of the past. Rap (说唱) is a modern musical style where the singer speaks or shouts the words in time to music with a steady (稳定的) beat.‎ Great Britain has produced more popular music stars than any other country. British groups often set new trends (潮流) in music. New styles, groups and singers continue to appear. Many of the new bands have been able to use changes in technology to develop their music such as computerized drum machines, synthesizers and other electronic instruments.‎ Tastes differ. So people’s musical interests range from pop and rock music to classical music and opera. My favorite style of music is pop music, because it is full of energy. When I listen to pop music it makes me remember happy times and forget the problems of everyday life. I also enjoy listening to classical music. The music I hate is heavy metal. I find it noisy. When I listen to this style of music it presents to my mind pictures of dark days. My mother and father agree with my tastes in music. Though they prefer to listen to classical, they think that modern music is not too bad.‎ Music appeals to our hearts. It comforts our souls and enriches (充实) our minds. Music is beauty in sounds; it is our magic source of inspiration.‎ ‎28.What is the first paragraph mainly about?‎ A. Different musical tastes.‎ B. The importance of music in our lives.‎ C. Several types of music.‎ D. The development of musical styles.‎ ‎29. How is the second paragraph developed?‎ A. By analyzing reasons. B. By describing courses (过程). ‎ C. By making comparisons. D. By giving examples. ‎ ‎30. Why does the author like pop music?‎ A. It sounds energetic.‎ B. It is loud and strong.‎ C. It is characterized by a steady beat.‎ D. It is played with electronic instruments.‎ ‎31. What is the author’s parents’ attitude towards his musical taste?‎ A. Dissatisfied. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Supportive. ‎ ‎ D A team of scientists and cave (山洞) experts stand at the entrance of Hang Son Doong – the world’s largest cave. Hidden deep in the forest of central Vietnam, the cave was created millions of years ago when rock under the mountain was eroded (侵蚀) by river water. The weakened rock finally crashed, creating a large world now waiting to be explored. ‎ Hang Son Doong, which means “mountain river cave”, was discovered by a local man named Ho Khanh in 1991, but it wasn’t until 2009 that a group of British cavers explored it for the first time. The cavers had to stop after four kilometers because a great wall blocked their way. But a year later, they returned to climb past the wall and find out where the cave ends.‎ Inside, the team learns that in some parts, the cave is more than 180 meters high and spreads almost 90 meters wide. A whole New York City block – complete with 40-story buildings – could fit inside the cave. There are even clouds above – the cave is so large that it has its own weather system!‎ Deeper in the cave, the team members fight to keep their balance as they walk slowly through an underground river. Then they make their way through a field of huge rocks – some the size of houses. The team reaches an area where the cave’s roof (顶部) has fallen in, creating two impressive natural skylights. An explorer says, “Watch out for dinosaurs” as his partner ‎ walks into the light. In this dreamy place, prehistoric reptiles (爬行动物) seem likely to appear at any moment.‎ Further inside, the team walks through a thick muddy trench (泥泞的沟渠). The team’s final difficulty is its biggest challenge – they climb up a 60-meter cliff (悬崖). After a two-day climb, they finally see light at the end of the passage as they reach the cave’s exit. Satisfied with the journey to explore, map, and photograph the world’s largest cave, the team climbs out into the sunlight. They have become the first people to explore the whole length of the cave.‎ ‎32. If we want to save our planet, then the so-called three Rs are essential (必要的) for learning how to deal with the waste we produce. 36 Here are a number of tips on what you can do to save the environment.‎ Reduce A good place to start is by buying things that don’t have a lot of packaging (包装). 37 You might borrow them instead of buying them. Generally, the use of electricity can be greatly ‎ reduced by, for example, turning off lights that are not used.‎ Reuse When you go shopping, refuse plastic bags and bring a reusable bag with you instead. If you’re not buying a lot, a bag is not necessary. 38 If you have clothes that are still in good shape, you can bring them to the collection points rather than throwing them away.‎ Recycle ‎ 39 Glass, plastic and paper can often be recycled. Glass has been used for thousands of years and is relatively easy to recycle. Plastic can be recycled quickly and easily. 40 The small fibers (纤维) in paper eventually become very weak so that they can’t be recycled into good paper any more. Also, not every type of paper is recyclable as some high-quality paper is too expensive to recycle.‎ A. Then there are items you may not use very often.‎ B. Recycling makes it possible to create new products out of old ones.‎ C. Paper is recyclable but it can’t be recycled forever.‎ D. The three Rs are “reduce, reuse and recycle”.‎ E.
