A A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms (习语), though my teacher told us the importance again and again. But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience. One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be surprised. Gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, he said , “You don’t say!” “You don’t say!” I was puzzled. I thought, perhaps this is not a right topic. “Well, I’d better change the topic.” So I said to him. “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? By the way, have you ever been there?” “Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It was wonderful.” He was deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide. “The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it.” Soon I was interrupted again by his words: “You .don’t say!” I couldn’t help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?” “Well, I didn’t ask you to do so,” he answered, greatly surprised. I said, “Didn’t you say ‘you don’t say’?” Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain, “‘You don’t say’ actually means ‘really!’ It is an expression of surprise. Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms.” I realized I had made a fool of myself. Since then I have been more careful with idiomatic expressions. Remember: what the English teachers said is always right to us students. 21. At first, on hearing “You don’t say,” I thought the foreigner meant . A. I had talked too much B. I had to stop talking C. he was not interested in the topic D. he was only interested in the Great Wall 22. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. The Englishman wanted me to act as his guide. B. The Englishman left China without seeing the Great Wall. C. The Englishman wanted to see the Great Wall after I talked about it. D. The Englishman visited the Great Wall and thought it worth visiting. 23. After the Englishman explained the idiom, . A. I felt very silly B. the Englishman became a real fool C. I became more carefully in everything D. I thought the Englishman had made me a fool B I was so surprised to find so many differences in the various school systems. The differences are huge. They mainly lie in the date school starts, the age at which kids start school, grading systems and teaching methods. In Germany, school kids are given a school cone on their first day of school. It can be filled with sweets, snacks, art supplies, lunch boxes, little books and small gifts. The kids can only open it at school. On entering a school, the kids don’t have to be able to write their names, although they must be able to hold a pen properly. School readiness is decided by not only physical development but also social skills. Russian children always start school on September 1st even if it’s a holiday or the weekend. This is referred to as “Knowledge Day” and marks both the first day of school and the first day of autumn. Most kids bring a change of shoes to school. The classrooms of the elementary school through the high school are usually in the same building. Dutch children go to school on their fourth birthday. This results in some chaos as new kids are added to the class throughout the year during the first year. The kids get to play and learn social skills and only start “real school” when they’re 6. However, school is not compulsory until the kids are 5 years old. Polish kids have to wear a formal costume—usually a white blouse with navy blue trousers or skirts for the girls and suits for the boys for the first day of school and school ceremonies. There’s also an opening ceremony where the kids are sworn in as the students of the first class. Finnish schools are considered to be the best in the world. They’re also very hands-off (不干涉的): no grades until Year Three. There are no national tests until the 12th year. Teachers are trusted and respected, and they have a lot of autonomy (自治权). 24. In Germany, when kids enter a school, they . A. will receive a cone as a reward B. won’t be tested on their social skills C. have to be able to write their names D. should know how to hold a pen properly 25. What does “Knowledge Day” mean in Russia? A. A public holiday. B. The graduation day. C. The first school day. D. The beginning of spring. 26. What are Polish school kids required to do on the first day of school? A. Wear a school uniform. B. Bring a school cone. C. Hold an opening ceremony. D. Receive a test of social skills. 27. What can we learn about the teachers in Finnish schools? A. They like giving tests. B. They must work very hard. C. They can decide how to teach. D. They don’t have a high social position. C When I was about ten years old, I was walking down the street with my mother. She stopped to speak to Mr. Lee. I knew I could see Mr. Lee any time around the neighborhood, so I didn’t pay any attention to him. After we passed Mr. Lee, my mother stopped me and said something that has stuck with me from that day until now. She said seriously, “You let that be the last time you’ve ever walked by somebody and not opened up your mouth to speak, because even a dog will wag its tail when it passes you on the street.” Mother’s words sound simple, but it’s been a guidepost for me and the foundation of who I am. It’s not just something I believe in; it’s a way of life. I believe that every person deserves to feel someone acknowledge their presence, no matter how humble (卑微) they may be. At work, I always said hello to the founder of the company and ask him how our business was doing. But I also spoke to the people who cleaned the buildings and asked how their children were doing. After a few years of greeting the founder, I had the courage to ask him for a meeting. We had a great talk. At a certain point I asked him how far he thought I could go in his company. He said, “If you want to, you can get all the way to this seat.” I’ve become vice president, but it hasn’t changed the way I approach people. I still follow my mother’s advice. I speak to everyone I see, no matter where I am. I’ve learned that speaking to people creates a pathway into their world, and it allows them to come into mine, too. 28. What did the author do when he met Mr. Lee? A. He talked with somebody else. B. He was attracted by a dog. C. He greeted him politely. D. He ignored him. 29. What kind of person is the author’s mother? A. Optimistic. B. Kind-hearted. C. Strict. D. Open-minded. 30. How did the company founder reply to the author? A. He inspired him. B. He played a joke. C. He invited him to coffee. D. He gave him the seat. 31. What does the author think of saying hello to people? A. It’s a way to show sympathy to people. B. It can build connections with others. C. It’s a must to become a president. D. It can bring him what he wants. D Goldfish have pretty boring lives, so maybe it’s a good thing they can only concentrate for nine seconds! But according to new research, humans are becoming like goldfish. Our attention span (时长) is getting shorter ... and it’s all because of technology. “We move quickly from one site to another on the web,” says Doctor Ted Selker, a computer scientist from Massachusetts, “and we are losing the ability to concentrate.” With millions of websites to choose from, the attention span of the average internet user is just seconds. There are other digital distractions (分心) too: email, instant messaging and quickie movies on websites. Some people are worried about the effect on young people. “You need time to understand and think about what you read,” says Julia Wood, from London.“Young people search the net all the time and their brains become full of useless information but there is no time to make sense of it. I am trying to persuade my pupils to read more books, so that they concentrate on one subject for longer.” Other teachers are trying more unusual methods to improve students’ concentration. Anne Savan, from Wales, was so worried about her students that she started playing Mozart during her science lessons. She says that it had an amazing effect: “The music made them calmer, and their concentration was much better.” But not everyone believes that there is a problem. Ray Cole, an educational psychologist says: “On web, young people learn to make quick decisions about what is and isn’t worth reading. They might look at five unhelpful websites very quickly, before stopping and reading a sixth useful website more carefully. In a world with so much information available, this is an important skill.” 32 Why does the writer mention“goldfish”? A. To analyze data. B. To introduce a topic. C. To settle problems. D. To suggest a way out. 33. What may cause a shorter attention span according to Dr. Ted Selker? A. Skipping around the internet. B. Time to digest information. C. Traditional methods of reading. D. Making decisions. 34. What will help students overcome a short attention span? A. Receiving emails. B. Texting messages. C. Reading more books. D. Watching quickie movies. 35. What is Ray Cole’s attitude towards looking through websites quickly? A. Cautious. B. Unfavorable. C. Skeptical. D. Supportive. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Chuck was in my high-school English class. 36 So, when he told me he had been accepted into the journalism program at the University of Missouri, I wasn’t surprised.
