A I’d lived in Mexico City for about six months before seeing somebody get obviously angry in public, but it wasn’t a Mexican. Seldom will you see a Mexican publicly lose emotional(情绪的)control, unless perhaps over-drinking of wine has happened. From a young age, Mexicans are taught not to get overly emotional. The common Mexican saying is “He who gets angry, loses”. The cultural customs in Mexico City contain a level of politeness, which I’ve not experienced in other cities of its size. These traditions of respectful language have been handed down by the country’s native populations, later mixed with the traditions of the Spanish when Hernan Cortes and his team seized the region in 1519. While the north of the country was settled very differently, with a less different colonial( 殖 民 的 ) period, central and southern Mexico were heavily influenced by 300 years of Spanish rule. In some native communities, including some Nahua communities, not looking people in the eye while speaking to them is a sign of respect, while holding eye contact for a long period, especially when done between two men, can be seen as a sign of provocation. It’s not to say that everyone in Mexico City is nice. But for one of the most crowded cities in the world with a lot of problems, many travelers find themselves commenting that at least here, people take the time for polite words. Perhaps the term of “organized disorders” is a good phrase to describe Mexico City. In the nearly two years I’ve lived in Mexico City, I’ve learned that maintaining this strict level of polite words is an art. Everyone is in it together, mixing through the madness of a large city just trying to live their lives. 21. In what situation may a Mexican lose his temper(脾气)? A. After he moves abroad. B. When he sees someone act rudely. C. After he drinks too much. D. When he loses something important. 22. What does the underlined word “provocation” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Being frightened. B. Being polite. C. Trying to disappoint somebody. D. Trying to make somebody angry. 23. Which of the following can best describe Mexico City? A. It is polite though with problems. B. It is very clean and beautiful. C. It makes people feel mad. D. It is in culture disorder. B High-tech tracking collars (项圈)on nine female polar bears have measured the animals’ efforts to find food on the reducing arctic ice. Each bear wore a collar—recording video, location and activity levels—for 8-12 days, while metabolic(新陈代谢的)tracers tracked the bears’ energy use. This showed that most of the animals were unable to get enough food to meet their energy needs. The team says wild bears have higher metabolic rates than thought. Moreover, climate change appears to be having great effects on the Arctic sea-ice, forcing polar bears to move greater distances as they hunt, and making it harder for them to hunt for food. The Arctic sea-ice, as measured at its smallest in September, is reducing at a rate of about 14% per ten years, which is likely reducing polar bears’ approach to seals. What’s more, their situation could be worsened by the need to change hunting strategies with the seasons. In the spring, the researchers explained polar bears are mostly hunting for young seals. But later in the year, after the bears’ long summer feast(盛宴), those young seals are older and wiser, meaning polar bears are not able to catch as many. “It’s thought that bears might catch a couple per month in the fall, compared to 5 to 10 per month in the spring and early summer,” Mr. Pagano said. “We now have the technology to learn how they are moving on the ice, their activity patterns, and their energy needs, so we can better understand the implications (启示)of these changes we are seeing in the sea-ice.” 24. What do the results of tracking collars show? A. There is less ice in the Arctic than before. B. There are few female polar bears in the Arctic. C. Many polar bears’ energy needs couldn’t be satisfied. D. Bears don’t have high metabolic rates as people think. 25. Why do polar bears move longer distances than they used to? A. They wear high-tech tracking collars. B. They need to use up their energy. C. There has appeared more ice in the Arctic. D. Climate change has affected their food sources. 26. Why is it easier for polar bears to hunt for seals in the spring? A. There is more ice in the spring. B. The seals are still young. C. The bears are wise. D. The bears move faster. 27. Which of the following can be the best title of the text? A. Polar bears running out of food. B. The decreasing ice in the Arctic. C. High-tech tracking collars on polar bears. D. The relation between polar bears and seas. C In the past ten years, I have occasionally knocked into students whose attention is limited to a telephone screen. I never used a so-called smartphone until my old cellphone became worn and I have been curious about what people find so attractive to them. In one of my classes last term I offered an “experimental” option in place of the usual research paper. Students could keep a record of a week with no phones, no Facebook, no Snapchat, no social media at all. The students mostly had grown up with smartphones. Many expressed fear of living for a time without one. It was “a black hole”, “the last meal before the electric chair”. For the first day or two, almost everyone said that being without social media was boring, especially standing in line at Starbucks. Next to boredom was loneliness and anxiety(焦虑). “Disconnecting from technology felt like disconnecting from life. I was left out,” said one student. Around three or four days, many noticed changes in their behavior. Sleep and energy levels improved. Several went to the gym more often. “I had an ocean of time to play in.” social relations changed hugely. “I had dinner with friends and we talked. I read a book my parents gave me in high school. Once I started, I couldn’t stop.” One spoke to a neighbor in class, “I made a real friend. I hadn’t done that since primary school.” Many discovered nature. “I actually stopped to admire the scenery, but quickly moved on because I was worried that people would see me staring at a tree, which is a bit strange.” Several were surprised at the wildlife on campus. “I had always known there were rabbits, birds and squirrels, but I never realized how many there were. I wondered what else I might have missed.” Students who took part in the experiment discovered a world beyond what one called the “real but not real” world of technology. They were likely as surprised at what they found as I was. 28. What do “a black hole” and “the last meal before the electric chair” indicate? A. The theory of the experiment. B. The possible results of students’ research. C. The dangers that one meets without phones. D. The students’ horror at a life without smartphones. 29. How do the students feel about the result of the experiment? A. Disappointed. B. Amazed. C. Suspected. D. Negative. 30. What is the best title for the text? A. Students’ discovery of how to reconnect with the world. B. Students’ various reactions to online connection. C. Students’ eagerness to live a life without technology. D. Students’ duty on how to live a meaningful life. 第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Heat or cold: Which is better? How to use ice Use an ice pack within 48 hours after an injury happens. But first cover the pack in a thin towel, so the cold won’t damage your skin. 39 Then take a 10-minute break at least before using it again. When to use heat When a pain returns often or continues for a long time, heat is the answer. 40 The pain often results from using that body part too much or in the wrong way. Heat is also a great help to joint (关节) pains. Hot-water bottles and hot baths are all ways to use heat. The next time you have pain or an injury, choose the right treatment! A. When did the injury happen? B. When was the last time you had an injury? C. When should you use ice or heat for pain? D. Use the pack for about 20 minutes at one time. E.
