The bitter part is saying goodbye to carefree, unscheduled summer days. The sweet part is saying hello to a new school year and school friends.‎ This exciting time is filled with smells of new books, paper and pencils. Children might be dressed in a new set of clothes and wear new shoes.‎ However, going back to school can also be a stressful time for children and families. Everyone must make the change from easy summer life to routines, schedules and homework. Families might also feel stress about spending extra money for a new school year.‎ Back-to-school stress is different for different grades of students. Younger children may feel scared to leave their families. Making new friends and dealing with bullying(欺负) can also cause stress for students. Older students may feel stressed about their appearances, grades and getting into college.‎ However, teachers and children can all help to make the transition back to school easier. Lori Bambina has been a teacher for 22 years. She focuses on the class routine during the start of the new school year.‎ ‎“Well, for the students, I have my classroom set up with a very clear system. So I will introduce the system. Then I will revisit the system because at this young age they enjoy structure and predictability. And that routine is very comforting and will not cause them to feel stressed if they know exactly where things are located and what type of behavior is expected. That really reduces the stress and the anxiety because they have their own comfort level now,” she said.‎ Whether you are in the 1st grade or 10th grade, knowing what your teachers expect is a good way to reduce stress.‎ ‎21. What do children think of back-to-school time?‎ A. They hate its coming. B. They have mixed feelings.‎ C. They deal with it peacefully. D. They are looking forward to it.‎ ‎22. What may make back-to-school stress differ?‎ A. Ages. B. Characters. C. Attitude. D. Family background.‎ ‎23. Why does Lori Bambina introduce the class routine at the start of school year?‎ A. To attract children's attention. B. To let children know the goal.‎ C. To make children work hard. D. To lessen children’s stress.‎ ‎24. A general way for all students to reduce stress is to _________.‎ A. get along well with their teachers B. complete their school tasks C. know teachers’ requirements D. follow their school rules B One of the most firmly established idea of manliness is that a real man doesn’t cry. Although he might shed a tear at a funeral, he is expected to quickly regain control. Sobbing openly is for girls. One study found that women cry significantly more than men do—five times as often, on average, and almost twice as long per period. ‎ Historically, however, men routinely wept, and no one saw it as shameful. For example, in the Middle Ages, knights cried purely because they missed their girlfriends. In The Knight of the Cart, no less a hero than Lancelot weeps at a brief separation from Guinevere. There’s no mention of the men in these stories trying to restrain or hide their tears. They cry in a crowded hall with their heads held high. Nor do their companions make fun of this public crying; it’s universally regarded as an admirable expression of feeling. ‎ So where did all the male tears go? The most obvious possibility is that this shift is the result of changes as we moved from an agricultural society to one that was urban(城市的) and industrial. In the Middle Ages, most people spent their lives among those they had known since birth. If men cried, they did so with people who would sympathize. But from the 18th to 20th centuries, the population became increasingly urbanize, and people were living in the midst of thousands of strangers. Furthermore, changes in the economy required men to work together in factories and offices where emotional expressions and even private conversations were discouraged as time wasting.‎ Yet human beings weren’t designed to swallow their emotions, and there’s reason to believe that holding back tears can be harmful to your well-being. Research from the 1980s has suggested a relationship between stress-related illnesses and inadequate crying. Weeping is also, somewhat related with happiness and wealth. Countries where people cry the most tend to be richer and more confident.‎ ‎25. In history, people considered it ________ for men to cry in public. ‎ A. manly B. acceptable C. shameful D. ridiculous ‎26. How does the author answer the question raised in paragraph 3? ‎ A. By making comparisons. B. By explaining effects.‎ C. By offering descriptions. D. By giving definitions (定义).‎ ‎27. Who is likely to be healthier according to the passage?‎ A. Tony who lives alone and seldom expresses himself.‎ B. Emily who is outgoing but sometimes sobs in public.‎ C. Arthur who is under great stress but never shed a tear. ‎ D. Rebecca who sometimes cries but quickly regain control.‎ C ‎“You're going to do WHAT?” I asked my best friend, Julie, in alarm.‎ ‎ “I’m going to try out for the cheerleading squad (啦啦队),” she said, eyes fixed on the ground. We had been best friends since second grade and we did everything together. We had made many plans about what we would do this year, but now she was going off on her own. I was sure that if she joined the cheerleading squad, she would become best friends with someone else and I couldn't stand the thought.‎ ‎“Why are you doing this? Do you really want to hang around with those girls instead of me?” I cried, my voice filled with anger. ‎ ‎“It's not about the girls,” Julie said. “It's about the sport. I want to be on the squad at the high school level because they win scholarships (奖学金) at state competitions, and I have a better chance if I'm on the squad here,” she explained. “Besides,” she added, “it's not like I'm leaving the country or something.” ‎ ‎“Goodbye,” I marched off, leaving Julie standing with a sad look on her face.‎ The rest of that week I was unhappy, and I avoided Julie in the hall. I planned to watch the first game and ignore Julie. Instead, I was amazed by the enthusiasm and skill of Julie's cheering. Although she was the youngest member of the team, Julie enthusiastically led cheer after cheer. I saw how her face lit up with joy. I was stunned (目瞪口呆) as I realized that she loved the sport. Trying out for the team had nothing to do with me---maybe it was just something she wanted to do.‎ I approached her shyly, but Julie smiled immediately. “Hey, you were really great.” I began, and then added quickly, “I’m so sorry I’ve been rude to you about your joining the squad.”‎ Julie smiled and replied, “A group of us are going for ice cream. Why don’t you come along?”‎ Julie’s quick forgiveness made my eyes burn, but I smiled in return. As I walked toward the cheerleaders, I realized there was room in Julie’s life for all of us. We could save the competition for the game.‎ ‎28. What upset the author according to paragraph 2?‎ A. Julie would be distant from her. B. Julie would be more excellent than her.‎ C. The cheerleaders were rude. D. The cheerleading squad was not famous.‎ ‎29. What caused a change in the author's feelings?‎ A. Talking to the squad after the game. B. Watching Julie cheer at the game.‎ C. Seeing Julie talk to cheerleaders. D. Meeting a new friend at school.‎ ‎30. What can be the best title for the text?‎ A. Learning to Think B. Winning the Game C.
