President Thomas Jefferson, however, knew that tomatoes were good to eat.He was a learned man.He had been to Paris, where he learned to love the taste of tomatoes. He grew many kinds of tomatoes in his garden. The President taught his cook a way for a cream of tomato soup. This beautiful pink soup was served at the President’s party. The guests thought the soup tasted really good. They never thought their President would serve his honored guests poison apples.Jefferson never spoke to his honored(忠实的)guests about the fact. 1.After you read the passage, which of the following do you think is true? A.Americans never ate tomatoes after they began to plant them. B.Americans didn’t eat tomatoes in the 18th century. C.Even now Americans don’t eat tomatoes. D.In the 18th century Americans ate a lot of tomatoes. 2.The passage tells us that Jefferson was a president who learned to love the taste of tomatoes . A.the President himself B.a French cook C.the President’s cook D.the President’s wife B In summer, millions of people will head for the beach. And while the ocean can be a great place to swim and play,it may also be useful in another way. Some scientists think that waves could help make electricity. “Have you ever been on a surfboard or boat and felt yourself being lifted up by a wave?Or have you jumped in the water and felt the energy as waves crashed over you?” asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.“There is certainly a lot of energy in waves.” Scientists are working on using that energy to make electricity. Most waves are created when winds blow across the ocean.“The winds start out by making little ripples(波纹)in the water, but if they keep on blowing, those ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves,” Taylor said.“Waves are one of nature’s ways of picking up energy and then sending it off on a journey.” When waves come towards the shore, people can set up dams or other barricades to block the water and send it through a large wheel called a turbine(涡轮).The turbine can then power an electrical generator(发电机). The United States and a few other countries have started doing research on wave energy, and it is already being used in Scotland. The resource is huge.We will never run out of wave power.Besides, wave energy does not create the same pollution as other energy sources, such as oil and coal. Oceans cover three quarters of the earth’s surface. That would make wave power seem perfect for creating energy around the world. There are some drawbacks, however. Jamie Taylor said that wave power still cost too much money. He said that its effects on animals in the sea were still unknown.Plus, wave power would get in the way of fishing and boat traffic. With more research, however,“Many of these problems might be overcome,” Taylor said.“Demand for energy to power our TVs and computers, drive our cars, and heat and cool our homes is growing quickly throughout the world.Finding more energy sources is very important, for traditional sources of energy like oil and gas may run out some day.” In the future, when you turn on a light switch,an ocean wave could be providing the electricity! 4.Which of the following is NOT true? A.Wave power doesn’t cost too much money. B.Wave energy is so clean that it doesn’t create the same amount of pollution as other energy sources. C.Wave power affects fishing and boat traffic. D.Wave power may affect marine animals.。 5.The underlined word “drawbacks” probably means . A.regrets B.adventures C.disadvantages D.difficulties 6.We can infer from the passage that . A.finding more new energy sources is not necessary because of wave energy B.wave energy is a resource that will never run out and will be used all over the world C.wave power is not quite perfect for creating energy around the world D.wave power doesn’t create any pollution 7.What can be the best title for the passage? A.How to Get Electricity by Waves B.The Advantages of Wave Energy C.Can Waves Make Electricity? D.The Disadvantages of Wave Energy C What do you know about the sea?We know that it looks very pretty when the sun is shining on it.We also know that it can be very rough when there is a strong wind. What other things do we know about it? The first thing to remember is that the sea is very big. When you look at the map of the world you will find there is more water than land. The sea covers about three quarters of the world. The sea is also very deep in some places. It is not deep everywhere. Some parts of the sea are very shallow. But in some places the depth of the sea is very great. There is one spot, near Japan, where the sea is nearly 11 kilometers deep! The highest mountain in the world is about 9 kilometers high.If that mountain were put into the sea at that place, there would be 2 kilometers of water above it!What a deep place! If you have swum in the sea,you know that it is salty. You can taste the salt.Rivers, which flow into the sea, carry salt from the land into the sea. Some parts of the sea are saltier than other parts. There is one sea, called the Dead Sea,which is very salty. It is so salty that swimmers cannot sink!Fishes cannot live in the Dead Sea! In most parts of the sea, there are plenty of fishes and plants. Some live near the top of the sea.Others live deep down. There are also millions of tiny living things that float in the sea. These floating things are so small that it is hard to see them. Many fishes live by eating these. The sea can be very cold.Divers who go deep down in the sea know this.On the top the water may be warm. When the diver goes downwards, the sea becomes colder and colder.Another thing happens. When the diver goes deeper, the water above presses down on him.It squeezes(挤) him. Then the diver has to wear clothes made of metal. But he cannot go very deep. Some people who wanted to go very deep used a very strong diving ship! They went down to the deepest part of the sea in it.They went down to a depth of eleven kilometers! 8.When does the sea look beautiful? A.When it is calm. B. When the weather is fine. C.When there is a strong wind. D.When there is a storm. 9.Why does the author cite(举例) the sea somewhere near Japan? B.It is a safe place for swimmers. C.It is extremely salty. D.No fish can be found in it. 11.Why can’t people go very deep in the sea? A.Because the deepest part of the sea is very cold. B.Because the deepest part of the sea is very rough. C.Because the pressure of the water at great depths is unendurable(无法忍受的). D.Because fierce fish usually live there. D Younger students experience school bullying (欺凌) more frequently than older ones, and male students are bullied more than their female peers, a survey found. It also found that nearly half of students had been intentionally hit or knocked down by classmates. About 6 percent said they are targeted by bullies on campus every day. The survey also found that students from ordinary schools experienced more bullying than peers from key institutions, and children from poor families are more likely to be bullied at school. Being bullied can have a negative impact on a child’s personal development and academic performance, according to Zhou Jinyan, a researcher who led the study at Beijing Normal University. “Children being bullied will find it hard to trust others,” Zhou said. “They may often feel anxiety, anger, resentment or depression. These emotions will further undermine their ability to control their own life.” In recent years, bullying on Chinese campuses has been frequently reported and has attracted widespread attention and concern. The most recent incident to arouse heated discussions took place in December at Beijing’s Zhongguancun No.2 Primary School. A fourth-grade student was bullied and laughed at by classmates, causing him acute stress disorder. The Supreme People’s Procuratorate (最高人民检察院) received about 1,900 cases related to school bullying in 2016. Meanwhile, there was a notable increase in bullying reports involving middle school students from 14 to 18 years old. Zhou came up with some ways to solve the problem, including boosting communication between teachers, parents and students and trying to establish more harmonious relationships among children. She said it was strongly suggested that parents try to be involved in their children’s educational experience, as their presence and companionship have proved effective in reducing bullying and its negative effects. 12. Who is the most likely to become the target of bullying? A. A 10-year-old girl from a key school B. A 10-year-old boy from a poor family C. A 17-year-old boy from a rich family D.A17-year-old girl from an ordinary school 13. Being bullied will cause students to go through the following EXCEPT _____. A. a lack of trust in other people B.a drop in academic performance C. a lack of confidence in themselves D.a drop in the sense of depression 14. We can learn from the text that _____. A. bullying at school usually leads to acute stress disorder B. bullying on campus has been brought into sharp focus by the media C. students who enjoy parents’ companionship will be bullying-free D. the government should consider taking further action against bullying at school 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. Is anything we can do about bullying? B. Negative effects on children caused by bullying C.Bullying affects half of students D. The reasons for bullying on campus 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Four Steps to Better Learning Sheela and Nisha had almost the same level of intelligence and came from similar family backgrounds.Sheela found it hard to memorise a poem for an oral test while Nisha did it without any difficulty. 16 Why was there a difference?
