It is unusual for what it contains: the news from local crime to international politics, from sports to business to fashion to science, and the comments and special features(特写)as well, from editorial page to feature articles, from interviews to criticism of books, art, theatre, and music. A newspaper is even more unusual for the way one reads it never completely, never straight through, but always by jumping from here to there, in and out, glancing at one piece, reading another article all the way through, reading just a few paragraphs of the next. A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers, but far more than any one reader is interested in. What brings this variety together in one place is itstopicality, that is, its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality now. But this immediacy and the speed of production that goes with it also mean that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than temporary value. For all these reasons, no two people really read the same paper: what each person does is to put together, out of the pages of that day’s paper, his own selection and order, his own newspaper. For all these reasons, reading newspapers efficiently which means getting what you want from them without missing things you need but without wasting time, demands skill and self-awareness(意识) as you change and apply the techniques of reading. 4. What does the underlined word in the second paragraph mean ? A. wide coverage B. speed in reporting news C. various style D. popularity among readers 5. According to the passage, the reason why no two people really read the same newspaper is that ___________. A people are interested in the same kind of news B. different people prefer different newspapers C. people scan for the news they are interested in D. people have different views about what a good newspaper is 6. A good newspaper offers “a variety” to readers because ___________. A. readers like to read different newspapers B. it has to cover things that happen in a certain locality C. readers are difficult to please D. it tries to serve different readers 7. The best title for this passage would be ___________. A. The Characteristics of a Good Newspaper B. The Importance of a good Newspaper C. Good Newspapers and Bad Newspapers D. Some Advice on How to Read a Newspaper 【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. 根据“topicality”所在的句子…. that is, its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality now. But this immediacy and the speed of production… 根据第二段句子no two people really read the same paper…his own selection and order, his own newspaper. A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers, but far more than any one reader is interested in. A。 C There’s nothing like a good night’s sleep—but what does that really mean? It turns out that the answer depends not only on your age, but also on your lifestyle. Some people are productive and happy with fewer hours of sleep, while others need more. Still, experts can determine guidelines that work for most people. The National Sleep Foundation researched the topic and gave new recommendations. The foundation acknowledges that sleep needs will vary—lifestyle and stress should be taken into consideration—but their recommendations offer a general guideline. For example, teenagers need 8-10 hours’ sleep every day. To create the recommendations, some sleep and medical experts reviewed 312 articles from journals published during the last decade. This is the first time that a professional organization has developed age-specific recommended sleep duration based on a systematic review of the world scientific literature. A lack of sleep can be linked to weight gain, because that causes an increase in appetite, according to the foundation. It can also have serious consequences on the brain. People who do not get enough sleep are at increased risk of depression, and can endanger others. Those who become sleepy while driving, for example, risk both their lives and the lives of those around them. Researchers also have found in the past that too much sleep can have negative effects. Low socioeconomic status(收入水平低) and depression reportedly are significantly associated with longer sleep. However experts nowadays find that research on oversleeping is still unconvincing and needs more attention. Currently, there is no strong evidence that sleeping too much has health consequences. There is, however, laboratory evidence that short sleep duration of four to five hours has negative consequences. We need similar laboratory studies to determine whether long sleep duration results in physiological changes that could lead to disease before we make any recommendations against sleep extension. 8. What can be learned about sleeping time ? A. The time you need for sleep is related to your state of mind B. Experts’ guidelines for sleeping time apply to all the people C. The less you sleep, the more productive you are D. The more you sleep, the more energetic you are 9. How did the National Sleeping Foundation do the research? A. By interviewing different people B. By reading lots of articles C. By consulting other experts D. By doing systematic experiments 10. What will people without enough sleep probably do according to the research? A. Lose some weight B. Eat more food C. Dream during their sleep D. Drive faster than usual 11. What can be learned from Paragraph Four ? A. Too much sleep may result in social changes B. Researchers now agree with those in the past C. More research on oversleeping is needed D. Research on oversleeping is quite convincing 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. It turns out that the answer depends not only on your age,but also on your lifestyle. Some people are productive and happy with fewer hours of sleep, while others need more. 故选A。 To create the recommendations, some sleep and medical experts reviewed 312 articles from journals published during the last decade. A lack of sleep can be linked to weight gain, because that causes an increase in appetite, according to the foundation. However, experts nowadays find that research on oversleeping is still unconvincing and needs more attention. C。 D First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skilful medical treatment is available. It may save a life or improve certain vital signs including the pulse, temperature, a clear airway(气道), and breathing. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victims’ condition from turning worse and provide relief from pain. First aid must be administered as quickly as possible. In the case of the critically injured, a few minutes can make a difference between complete recovery and loss of life. First-aid measures depend upon a victim's needs and the provider’s level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to permanent spinal(脊柱的) injury and paralysis(瘫痪). Despite the variety of injuries possible, several principles of first aid apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. The victim, if conscious(有意识的), should be reassured that medical aid has been requested, and asked for permission to provide any first aid. Next, assess the scene, asking other people or the injured person’s family or friends about details of the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and pre-existing conditions such as diabetes(糖尿病) or heart trouble. The victim should be checked for a medical bracelet(医用手环) or card that describes special medical condition. Unless the accident becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim. First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether life-threatening condition exists. One method for evaluating a victim's condition is known by the acronym(首字母缩写词)ABC, which stands for: A—Airway: Is it open and clear? B—Breathing: Is the person breathing? Look, listen and feel for breathing. C—Circulation: Is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding externally? Check skin colour and temperature for additional indications of circulation problems. 12. First aid may bring about all the following results EXCEPT_______. A. saving a victim’s life B. preventing a victim’s condition from getting worse C. relieving a victim from pain D. helping a person avoid sudden illness or injury 13. Before we offer first aid to a victim, it is very important for us to_______. A. make sure what to do and what not to do B. refer to all kinds of handbooks on first aid C. remove the ring or bracelet he may be wearing D. take him to hospital at once 14. When giving first aid to a victim, you should first of all______. A. remove him from the accident scene B. turn him over C. call for professional medical help D. examine him carefully 15. You may assess a victim’s condition by all the following EXCEPT______. A. checking whether there is a pulse B. looking, listening and feeling for breathing C. replacing his medical bracelet or card D. examining whether the airway is open and clear 【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B—Breathing: Is the person breathing? Look, listen and feel for breathing. C—Circulation: Is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding externally? The nursery team switches him every few ___49___ (day) with his sister so that while one is being bottle-fed, ___50___other is with mum—she never suspects. 41. attraction 42. it 43. was allowed 44. officially 45. to 46. when 47. permitted 48. introducing 49. days 50. the 【解析】 【分析】 本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了作者作为一名熊猫爱心大使,在成都的一个非盈利性的熊猫养护基地护理大熊猫的故事。 ____I was the first Western TV reporter_ 6_( permit)to film a special unit caring for pandas rescued from starvation in the wild 是一个非限定性定语从句,修饰先行词my days,表示时间,在从句中作时间状语,故填when。 permitted to film a special unit 根据上文中出现的one和空后other可知,此处考查的词组为one…the other…,一个..... 故填 the。 He is the first pioneer to grow hybrid rice. Yesterday, I saw the old lady fall down when I was hurrying to school.
